Meet Alive Like Me, the latest signing to the Rise Records roster of talent. Based out of Eugene, Oregon, Alive Like Me is ready to break out of their hometown and have the world take notice. Their first single Start Again has just been issued – a promising preview to their upcoming debut for Rise. At press time, it was announced that Alive Like Me would be on this year’s edition of the Vans Warped Tour. Here is a recent interview we conducted with Alive Like Me to find out more about the collective ready to slam into the big leagues. Read on…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Alive Like Me, and how long the band has been together.
Well… Since we all live in the same house you’ll never catch us apart. Currently typing is Jairus Kersey, Singer… But, we are all here to answer every question so that you’ll get perfect answers that reflect the band as a whole. We’ve been together almost a year now as we approach March.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
The band is based out of Eugene , Oregon . We are all super proud to be able to represent our home town. A few of us started playing music around Eugene at the age of 14. I can’t begin to tell you how fortunate we were to have grown up around here. The people are all great. The bands are all legit. And we can’t wait to make them proud!
How did you wind up signing with Rise Records?
We recorded an early EP with Ryan Furlott at Rain City Audio, and he saw the potential in our music. He felt confident to put his name on the line for us and sent out our music to his contacts at 3 different record labels. We unexpectedly got interested responses from all 3 labels, and for many reasons ended up choosing Rise Records. From there, we had a showcase scheduled the next week for the owners of Rise Records. Needless to say they liked it!
What inspired the lyrics to your single Start Again?
The simplest way to put it is this: We’ve been in many bands. We have had a lot of doors slammed in our face and this song was meant to describe the feeling of not knowing whether or not to stand up and keep going or to “Start Again” It also applies to many other situations in normal everyday life. We want our fans to be able to apply it to their life. And hopefully we can make a difference.
Select any other Alive Like Me song and what inspired the lyrics.
We have a song on the record that was written to portray this message: People shouldn’t waste time on things that they don’t truly love doing. Everyone should spend time trying to leave a piece of themselves behind for others to learn from and grow. “You can bury me, but you’ll never bury my words“
What could one expect from a live Alive Like Me show?
ALM is here to bring an intense melodic spin on a rock show. We love to start the party and we love to leave people wanting more. But I think to really understand… you’ll just have to come see us live on any of our upcoming tour dates.
Has Alive Like Me ever played in the Los Angeles area or plan to do so in future days?
Not yet, We do have plans to be there this summer TBA 😉
Any strange or scary happenings on the road or at an Alive Like Me show?
The worst luck that we have had so far was on the day of our showcase for Rise Records. Our guitar player, Dakota, dropped his speaker cabinet on his foot, and completely snapped one of his toes. Later on, during the drive to the showcase, our van broke down, and we almost weren’t able to make it to the showcase. Unexpected technical difficulties proceeded to happen during the performance, but we pushed through, and ended up having a pretty cool story for the most important show of our lives so far.
If Alive Like Me could open up for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Paramore would be amazing. we all respect their music and would LOVE to share the stage with them someday! We have so many other influences that we someday hope to meet and tour with! Just way too many to list here.
What would you like a listener to remember the most after hearing your music for the first time?
We generally try to stay positive with our lyrics and super passionate with our instrumentals. We hope we can give them a moment to reflect on themselves and the people around them. Hopefully if they are in a tough spot, we can help them remember what its like to be without that burden.
What’s up next for Alive Like Me?
Since we just finished our first Record, keep a look out this summer for that to hit the shelves. Along with Music videos, Merch, and TOURS TOURS TOURS!
Any final words of wisdom?
Discouragement can be a very common thing early on in your dream chasing. Our song “Start Again” is directed at this very problem. We know from experience that if you just keep trying, and aren’t afraid to start again, you will succeed. If we can do it…so can you.
