There is a ton of passion and conviction to be found within the music of Antagonist A.D. Mediaskare Records was certainly impressed enough to sign Antagonist A.D. and recently unleashed the band’s brand new album. Entitled Nothing From No One, the explosive collection of tunes is sure to garner this New Zealand based collective a good deal of attention all across the globe. Here is a recent interview we conducted with vocalist Sam Crocker to find out more about the band ready to take on the world with their hardcore anthems. Read on…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Antagonist A.D. and how long the band has been together.
I’m Sam, I sing in Antagonist A.D. – We’ve been going as we are since 2006.
Where is the band based out of and what is the local music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We originally formed in Hamilton, NZ. But now 4/5ths of us live in Auckland. Local scene ebbs & flows in NZ.
Due to NZ’s size it’s always been a relatively small scene, but it’s tight . We’ve got some really cool venues going on (like VOID 651).
Local bands – BAD (if you like Punk), Ulcerate (if you like Metal), Regime (if you like Hardcore).
Being from New Zealand, how did you wind up being signed to Mediaskare Records?
We’ve just played & toured as much as we can – Mediaskare has looked after friends of ours in the past – Deez Nutz, Confession, The Red Shore etc.
We we’re writing this album & our friends in The Ghost Inside recommended we try them & they put us in touch.
They liked what we were doing & we’ve been a fan of the label for a long time – so it made a lot of sense.
Is there any story or concept behind the CD title Nothing From No One?
The title came mid-writing, it relates on a few different levels to the CD & ourselves.
– we are a band from the bottom of the world, no one owes us anything
– that feeling of anxiety & alienation when you’re in a full room & feel nothing from anyone.. alone in a crowded room.
What inspired the lyrics on some of the songs?
Just go pick up a copy of our CD from a store or order online from Mediaskare Records, it has explanations for every song in the booklet.
The booklet itself looks awesome too with artwork from New Zealand’s best tattoo artist Dean Sacred.
Has Antagonist A.D. ever played here in the States or plan to do so in future days?
We haven’t been over yet but we’re trying to make something happen 2013..
What could one expect from a live Antagonist A.D. show?
A hardcore show – the music is energetic, aggressive & groovey.. It picks you up.
How did the recent tour with Lionheart go and what were some of the highlights?
Unfortunately Lionheart had to pull out last minute – but the shows were wild – you can catch all the highlights on this video – http://vimeo.com/48949712
Will Mediaskare be re-releasing Old Bones Make New Blooms and what is the story behind that title?
No we’ve got the for free download on our facebook page however!
Old Bones make New Blooms – was a turning point for our band.
After two years of focussing on touring & playing shows it was the first time we’d sat down together to write new tracks.
It was the first time writing with our at the time new guitarist Matt Livingstone.
So we wanted to do something with new life – new energy to the band. OLD BONES MAKE NEW BLOOMS seemed a fitting title for that.
What was the experience like touring with such bands have Have Heart and Most Precious Blood?
Have Heart was the best band I have ever seen live. Hands down. Pat is such an engaging front man – amazing.
Just so inspiring to step our games up & put more into the music/feeling.
Any strange or scary stories from the road you could share?
Long story short –
Man knocks out girl.
I take man out of venue for a ‘chat’.
Man chases me with a machete.
Find girl after – she says ‘Sorry about my dad’.
What are some of your favorite vegan treats, and how easy or difficult is it to eat vegan while out on the road?
It’s super easy being vegan on the road, it’s all routine.
It can be hard in new countries but if you have someone with you that’s vegan it makes it easier.
When we were in Europe our driver was vegan so he’d point out everything at any food place we went too.
What’s up next for Antagonist A.D.?
We’ve got a string of local shows coming up to the end of this year. Jumping to Australia for a mini tour as well.
Then getting ready for a big 2013.
Any final words of wisdom?
Thanks heaps for taking the time to ask me these questions – appreciate it!
