The year 2011 is turning out to be a terrific one for A Skylit Drive. They’ve been on tour with the likes of Underoath and Thursday, have been announced for another run of this year’s edition of the Warped Tour – and have just released their third full length album of tunes entitled Identity On Fire. We recently spoke with one of the Skylit members to find out more about the new album, the current tour, the days of Warped, the legendary Journey, and other combustible topics of interest…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in A Skylit Drive, and how long the band has been together.
My name is Nick Miller and I play guitar. The band has been together for about 4 and a half years.
How has the tour with Underoath and Thursday been going and what have been some of the highlights?
Touring with Underoath and Thursday is a dream come true for us. These are some of our favorite bands and inspirations of our own band. They are some of the nicest dudes we have had the pleasure of touring with and it makes me appreciate their bands even more now that we have gotten to know them as some rad people. This tour has had its share of good times. I’d say one highlight for me was Vegas kickin’ with a lot guys from the tour. Joey and I actually crashed on Thursday’s bus that night.
How does the new album Identity On Fire compare to the previous A Skylit Drive releases?
There is a lot more energy in every song. We wanted a more upbeat album. Slightly heavier… more fun. Having the time to work on this one was great. Also working with a producer, especially Cameron Webb, was such a good experience. Having another ear and other ideas from an outside perspective was such an amazing outlet for writing the record.
Is there any story or concept behind the Identity On Fire title?
It’s not a concept album but Identity On Fire means creating your own identity and being whoever you want to be. Life is about what you want not what someone else wants for you. Most songs revolve around this concept.
Where did you get the ideas for the lyrics this time around? Please select two songs in particular and tell me what inspired the lyrics?
Jag and I teamed up for most lyrics along with the rest of the dudes chipping in ideas. It was really cool to write this way because we all got to collaborate on lyrics. Too Little Too Late is about not letting things get you down and not giving up. Stay positive homes. Identity On Fire has a close meaning but I had a chance to share some personal issues I have had and put it into a song. Just about messing up and doing the wrong thing and overcoming life’s obstacles and making it right.
What made you decide to cover Separate Ways by Journey on the Punk Goes Classic Rock comp and have you played that one live yet?
We love Journey and that song had elements like our own songs. It was honestly easy to cover because we felt so connected to that song instrumentally and vocally. It was a lot of fun. We have played it live for the past few tours actually.
Do you know if Journey has heard your cover of their song yet?
Actually they have… which is incredible! Another one of our favorite bands. Kyle’s parents know the former keyboard player so it was really cool that some of Journey listened to it and wanted us to know they dig it. We have so much respect for them so that was an awesome feeling.
What could one expect from A Skylit Drive show in 2011?
Identity On Fire and much more touring!
Any chance you guys might be on the Warped Tour this year?
I hope we are! (Editor’s Note: Indeed they are! The Official Warped Tour website has just announced that A Skylit Drive will be a participant this year.)
What advice would you give a band about to attempt the Warped Tour for the very first time
Everyone could use some advice on this one. Stay hydrated! I had to hit up the hospital for not following that rule. You wake up early so be prepared for some interesting hang overs. You will feel like you have one even if you don’t party. Sun screen. An abundance of undies and socks. Lastly it’s the most fun tour in the world so be prepared to have the time of your life.
Does Jag still keep in touch with the guys from Odd Project?
Yeah he does. We are good friends with John from that band.
Does anyone in A Skylit Drive participate in any outside or solo projects?
Jag has one and so does Joey and I.
What is the strangest thing that has happened to you while on the road?
We get asked this question a lot and there are so many strange things that happen on a daily basis that may seem strange to most but have become the norm for us. We have some pretty wild times.
What are your plans after the Underoath tour?
Just getting our new album Identity on Fire out there. Tours are because discussed so keep an eye out!
Any messages for your fans here in the LA/Orange County area?
