Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Astral Domine, and how long the band has been together.
Hi everyone, my name is Luca Gagnoni, I am from Tivoli, and I am the founder, composer and guitar player of Astral Domine. I founded the band in 2011.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local metal scene like there?
We come from Tivoli, a little town near Rome. Here the metal scene is not very wide, but there are some good bands.
Is there any story or concept behind the CD title Arcanum Gloriae?
Not really a story, but I think that the title “Arcanum Gloriae” is perfect for this album: all the songs are about pride, honor, glory and more, so “Arcanum Gloriae” can contain all the meanings of the songs.
Select two songs from Arcanum Gloriae and what inspired the lyrics.
If you tell me to select two songs from the album my choices have to be “Holy Knights” and “My Lord”. “Holy Knights” is a god’s incitement to war: he encourages his warriors to battle telling them “Now up your sword, is time to fight...”. I think it’s a very powerful song, with a great chorus. “My Lord” is a song that has a deep meaning to me. I think it’s the saddest song of the album: it’s about a great warrior who is about to die and his son who, beside him, swears to protect his soul and to kill the one responsible for his death.
I can say that all the lyrics of Arcanum Gloriae are inspired by fantasy themes and literature, which we are fans of.
Who did the artwork for Arcanum Gloriae and how much input did you have on it?
The artwork of Arcanum Gloriae was realized by Dooms Illustrations, a great guy with an amazing talent. I gave him the initial input of how the artwork had to be done and then he put some of his great ideas to realize what I think is an amazing artwork.
What was it like working with Fabio Lione of Rhapsody Of Fire and how did he become involved with the project?
It was incredible! I am a big fan of him and I can tell you that I have realized a big dream! I contacted Fabio to propose him a collaboration with Astral Domine and he accepted immediately. He did a fantastic job and was extremely professional!
What could one expect from a live Astral Domine show?
An Astral Domine show will be a mix of energy, epicness, theatricality, with a great and amazing orchestral impact! Every show of Astral Domine will be amazing!
Has Astral Domine ever played here in the States or plan to do so in future days?
We have never played in the States yet, but we are planning some live shows and we hope we will be able to bring Astral Domine’s music in the States and in other countries.
If you could open up for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
We would like to open up for Rhapsody of Fire or Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody because their music is a great source of inspiration for all of us!
Are you involved with any other bands outside of Astral Domine?
Me and Yeshan aren’t involved with any other bands, but Marco, Francesco, Davide and Mirko, they all have other bands. Personally, I prefer to focus all my energy and time on Astral Domine.
What would you like a listener to remember the most after hearing Arcanum Gloriae for the first time?
I would really like the listener to understand the deep meaning of our album, both in the lyrics and in the music. I wish every chorus, every solo part to remain impressed in the listener’s mind, but above all I wish that he can “see” the songs: I’ve always tried to create a very “visual” kind of music, a music that could project images in the listener’s mind, and make him feel the rage of a battlefield, the inner peace of watching valleys on the back of a dragon, sadness and sorrow and so on… I wish that the listeners will comprehend this and that they will let this mix of emotions carry them away.
What’s up next for Astral Domine?
We are planning some good shows for the Arcanum Gloriae tour! We are working very hard to offer all our fans a great performance! I also started to write the songs for our second album and I can tell you that it will be more epic and orchestral than Arcanum Gloriae!
Any final words of wisdom?
So, I really hope that you’ll enjoy Arcanum Gloriae. We are very happy about this album and we’re very excited to offer you some good shows! See you on tour! May the dragons be with you!!
