The Sonic Terrains of At War With Giants

Today is the day we stand up, today is the day we begin our fight,” the introduction of the At War With Giants self-titled EP proclaims with a stunning sense of ferocity.  Fans of bands such as Underoath and As Cities Burn will surely want to explore the sonic terrains of this Omaha, Nebraska based collective.

Here is an interview we conducted with guitarist Jon Kuenning to find out more about this exciting new band on the rise and their exhilarating tunes.  Read on…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in At War With Giants, and how long the band has been together.
Jon Kuenning: Guitar/Vocals
We have been together a little over a year

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are from Omaha, Ne. Most people know Omaha for the Saddle Creek bands such as Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint etc. Omaha also has a large metal/hardcore scene some local bands to check out would be Superior, Byleth, Words Like Daggers and a gnarly oldschool hardcore/punk band named Ties.

How easy or difficult was it to record and release your new release pretty much on your own?
Tough with the funding and promoting sides, but that’s all part of the fun as well. We love making music and touring to get out there to perform. Hopefully with Persistent Heart’s management we’ll be able to get our foot in the door with touring more and getting our name out there.

Select two songs from the new release and what inspired the lyrics.
Creature was about me, being someone who I didn’t want to be. Struggling to become the person I knew I could be and knowing I had to struggle to come out on top. Not just me, but the world too.

Hello progress is about how everyone on this earth has a purpose. We are all here for a reason. A greater purpose than just living. All a “piece of the puzzle”. Together, we can find progress.

What could one expect from a live At War With Giants show?
ENERGY, we try and put on the best live show we can every time if it’s for a crowd of 3 or 300 we want everyone to have a good time rock with us. For me that’s what I go to concerts for – the band’s energy and getting to see the heart and soul they put into their music.

Who are some of the bigger bands you have opened for and what was the experience like? Is there any show in particular that stands out for you?
We have opened up for some great bands including The Browning, Close to Home, Ice Nine Kills, A Lot Like Birds, For All I Am, One Year Later and we will be playing with Dance Gavin Dance,The Color Morale, Our Last Night, FACT, I Set My Friends On Fire, and My Ticket Home later this summer. All of these shows we played were amazing, and we loved hanging with all these bands. One that stood out for us is getting to play with The Browning, we were on tour in March and had a date in Peoria, IL and they were on their way to NY to meet up with a tour and they hopped on our date, it was such a pleasant surprise and they were so friendly and a blast to play with.

What kind of touring have you done so far and do you have any strange stories from the road you could share?
We’ve done a few weekend runs and one 5 day tour back in March in support of the EP we released. Strangest story is from our most recent run up to MN, we were staying at a hotel in Albert Lea, MN and we were all just falling asleep around 1:30-2:00am. Then all of a sudden the fire alarms just went off, all of us just grabbed everything we could and walked out the door, fire trucks and police start showing up. Then we find out a half an hour later it was just a couple of kids who were staying in the hotel room, it made it a much more interesting trip that’s for sure.

What was the experience like playing Warped Tour last year, and is there any chance you’ll be on it again this year?
Playing Warped tour was great, it was a shock to me as well I didn’t even really know about the contest we were in and of course you never really think you’ll win something like that. It was a real honor and something I know I’ll never forget. And it’s Warped tour so there’s thousands of kids there so no matter when you play there’s gonna be a solid crowd. I would love to get to play again this year and I hope it works out again.

If you could open up for any band either now or who has ever existed, which band would that be and why?
Personally I’d pick either As Cities Burn or The Chariot. As Cities Burn is easily one of my favorite bands ever so getting to open for them would be like a dream come true and I think their fans would be into us (fingers crossed) so I think it’d be a fun show. I’d also pick The Chariot because those guys are just nuts and the house would be rocking hard that night!

What’s up next for At War With Giants?
Touring, writing, writing, writing & writing… haha we plan on heading back to the studio this fall/winter and recording again. We’ve been writing since we were in the studio last winter and are itching to get these new songs out!

Any final words of wisdom?
Don’t rush anything and stay persistent.
