This month Basick Records is celebrating five years of breaking some of the UK’s most progressive and exciting bands with a full month of promotions, give-aways, discounts and an unforgettable FREE 5th birthday party at UBSU Luton which is set to be the underground metal event of the year featuring the hottest of the new breed of metal bands.
Opening is the legendary multi instrumentalist and djent pioneer CHIMP SPANNER, whose first ever live performance is guaranteed to get the muso contingent wetting their pants. Following are prog metallers BETWEEN THE SCREAMS; their debut album “Our Last Days on Earth” was described by Metal Hammer as “Huge, epic weeping metallic hardcore statements. Perfect”. Formed from the ashes of Fell Silent, MONUMENTS are main support and will be performing tracks from their hugely anticipated debut album. The headliners are one of the hottest UK acts and are blowing up in a big way. Recent Century Media signings TESSERACT play the final slot and guarantee a mind warping performance.
About Basick Records
In 2005, two half brothers based in London, Jake Smith and Nathan ‘Barley’ Philips, frustrated with seeing talented, young and genuinely exciting technical metal bands not getting the recognition they deserved, decided to start a record label from the spare bedroom in their parents’ house. With the vision of being a fresh label with no gimmicks and no bullshit, it would be known as Basick Records.
Nathan has commented on the choice of name. “The name Basick was a 3-way deliberate play on words. With a lot of bullshit going on in and around the scene at the time, we decided to setup a label that would strip things back to basics and offer artists a fair and transparent deal. We also knew at the time that we would be signing bands that musically, were anything BUT basic in terms of their ability and musicality. And of course, it is also a play on the slang word ‘sick’, meaning brilliant or awesome.”
The label’s first signing were the UK’s Fellsilent, a band that endured relative success on a national and international level and have released an EP and an album on the label. Unfortunately, the band has since disbanded with some member going on to form a recent signing for the Basick roster, Monuments.
Basick can also be proud to say they were the first to release material by Enter Shikari, a band that has gone on to enjoy huge acclaim and success in the alternative rock scene.
In 2008, Jake Smith left the label to pursue his musical endeavours in the band Our Divide which left Nathan as sole owner of the label. In the five years of Basick’s life so far, the roster has grown considerably whilst the ethos has remained the same; to support fresh, technical and progressive bands. The label recently announced the exciting news that Canadian groove monsters, Ion Dissonance had joined the ranks amongst the UK based bands, including No Made Sense, Chimp Spanner, Bury Tomorrow and The Arusha Accord, that all call Basick home.
With unbridled enthusiasm and passion to progress and take Basick across international waters, Nathan comments “Although we’ve achieved a lot to be proud of in these first five years, I feel that this is only the beginning – we’ve got so much more left to achieve. There’s so much more I want this label to do.”
