Chelsea Grin: Of Deathcore and Damnation

Hailing from the wilds of Salt Lake City, Utah, Chelsea Grin is a dynamic deathcore entity who has been assaulting ears all across the nation with their tremendously heavy tunes.  Crossing the country now on the All Stars Tour with the likes of Alesana, Blessthefall, Emmure, For Today and many others. the mighty Chelsea Grin is spreading the heavy metal gospel of their latest Artery release entitled My Damnation.  While on the road, Chelsea Grin took the time to answer our inquiries regarding the epic new album, their hometown, a collaboration with Whitechapel and other topics of interest…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Chelsea Grin, and how long the band has been together.
Hey, this is Dan, I play the guitar, and I’m Alex, I sing for Chelsea Grin. We’ve been a band for just over 3 years now, and touring for 2.

What was it like growing up in Salt Lake City playing such heavy music? Is there any sort of music scene there?
Our hometown area is pretty small, so we don’t get shows with thousands of people at them much, but Salt Lake City has always had a decent metal/hardcore scene. It’s definitely had its ups and downs with venues closing and other sort of stuff, but for the most part we’ve always had a great time playing in our hometown.

How has the All Stars tour been going so far and what have been some of the highlights?
We’re just a few days into the tour now, and its already been awesome. All of us have been really stoked for this tour for a long time, it’s great to finally be on it. The amount of people we are playing in front of every night and the crowd reactions are mind blowing. And every single band on the tour is awesome.

Is there any story or concept behind the CD title My Damnation?
I wanted to base the lyrics for My Damnation on more of a story of a man’s journey from being a selfish tyrant, to going through hell, desperately seeking salvation.

Where do you get the ideas for some of your lyrics?
I’m not a very religious person, I just find the concept of heaven and hell really interesting so it provides me with a lot of ideas for song writing.  My Damnation was inspired by the idea that when you die and you weren’t a righteous person, you will be condemned to hell for eternity.

Who did the cover art for My Damnation and how much input did you have on it?
Our friend Ryan Johnson did all the artwork. He is a tattoo artist from Salt Lake City that works at a shop called Oni. He’s a great artist, and a great friend so we knew we could trust him with making an amazing cover!

How did Philip Bozeman of Whitechapel become involved with the recording of All Hail The Fallen King and have you ever performed the song live with him?
Our band have always been a fan of his band and his vocals, and when we found out about the tour we had lined up with them we just figured we’d ask if he was interested. His part turned out great, and playing the song with him live was devastating.

How does My Damnation compare to the previous Chelsea Grin recordings?
We feel like that album is a more mature and solid album. We’ve all grown as musicians so naturally it’s going to have a bit of a different feel to it.

What could one expect from a live Chelsea Grin show?
They should expect an intense, and energetic show. We love making our live set as heavy as possible. We like to see a crowd lose their minds.

Any strange happenings or mishaps while out on the road?
You have no idea. There are way too many strange happenings to even name. I got onstage with a shattered jaw on the Thrash and Burn tour.

Do you still keep in touch with any of the previous Chelsea Grin members?
We’ve gone our separate ways for a while now and don’t really have much contact with them anymore.

What advice would you give a young band about to go on tour for the very first time?
Just work your ass off to get your name out there! You gotta set up your own tours and spend a lot of your own money at first, but if you do it right, and you have the heart, you will make it!

What’s up next after the All Stars Tour?
We’ll be heading to Europe for our very first time with Miss May I! and much more after that. We’ll have a lot of sick tours lined up for the future of this band.

Any final words of wisdom?
Please pick up our brand new album “My Damnation” and come see us live whenever you get the chance!
