Christa Wells

Christa Wells is an award winning singer/songwriter from Raleigh, North Carolina, whose previous collection of tunes Feed Your Soul presented a passionate artist at the height of her creativity. Songs such as the sassy Vanity Vanity and the wistful Have Your Eyes Open demonstrated Christa Wells’ talent for conveying inspiring lyrics with her wonderfully expressive vocal delivery.  It’s interesting to see that Christa’s next recording is an EP of songs she didn’t write at all. Appropriately titled Covers, five selections from the 90’s are re-imagined and the results are absolutely stunning.

Covers opens with Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, the final single from The Smith – featuring a breathtaking performance from Christa Wells, who all but renders the song as her very own. The iconic Come As You Are by Nirvana is given an intoxicating makeover, the classic grunge lyrics juxtaposed with an exquisite tranquility which resonates throughout.

christa1_250x233U2 is a supremely difficult act to cover, but Christa Wells unveils an enlightening One with an all-out triumph. This beautiful acoustic rendition features a marvelous harmony vocal by Kaleb Jones. The surprises continue with a sparse yet devastating cover of Depeche Mode’s Waiting For The Night To Fall, exploring a spirituality through the vast darkness thanks to Christa Wells’ poignant interpretation.  And then closing out the Covers EP is a sweeping version of Smashing Pumpkin’s massive hit Tonight Tonight, concluding the auditory odyssey on a joyously optimistic note.

Covers is a captivating, thoroughly imaginative experiment that should enrapture Christa Wells’ ever burgeoning fan base – as well as gain the GMA Songwriter of the Year winner a good amount of attention from admirers of the originals who just happen to stumble upon these magnificent renditions. Another successful Kickstarter project, featuring vibrant renderings on classic songs that you’ll want to revisit time and again!
