Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody and Primal Fear at City National Grove of Anaheim

DX0A6258Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody and Primal Fear, City National Grove of Anaheim, May 12, 2016

It was time to go behind the Orange Curtain for an absolutely mystical night of metal and mayhem. The most magical place on Earth would not be a corporate theme park down the road, but at the City National Grove of Anaheim, where Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody and Primal Fear would be placing the petal to the metal! The venue is cavernous and spacious, and it was the perfect place to witness what would be a show of epic proportions. After a few local openings bands which set the night in motion, it was time for the Europeans to take over the stage. With the chants of “Primal Fear, Primal Fear” enveloping the room, you could tell this would be a metal show for the ages. It was time for the Prometheus Cinematic Tour 2016 to begin, and you could feel the excitement in the room as we all awaited the sonic artistry of the two iconic metal collectives ready to deliver the goods in vast and epic way!

DX0A6005Primal Fear

The German Metal Commandos of Primal Fear were up first, commencing with the dynamic refrains of Final Embrace from their classic 1999 album Jaws Of Death – and the audience instantly erupted into a fevered circle pit! In town to promote the recently released Rulebreaker, Primal Fear played a good amount of songs from the new album. And what an exhilarating collection of new material, starting with the glorious In Metal We Trust, which is destined to become a staple within the Primal Fear repertoire of tunes! The title track Rulebreaker was fantastic in a live setting, one of the most melodic songs Primal Fear has committed to disc that absolutely rages within a live setting. The Sky Is Burning shows just what the Teutonic terrors could do with a ballad, with the results being absolutely staggering in scope. And for those wanting to hear the Primal Fear favorites, an artillery of auditory madness would include Nuclear Fire, Sign Of Fear, and the trademark Metal Is Forever.

Vocalist Ralf Scheepers sounds absolutely amazing alive – a true classic metal front man whose commanding voice sets the material in flight. Also noteworthy is bassist and longtime member Mat Sinner, a veteran of the worldwide metal scene who thunderous low end and lively performance was truly inspiring. The entire Primal Fear 2016 lineup was on fire, earning a well-deserved encore from the very appreciative metal horde of Anaheim. And the band delivered in kind, closing out the show with fan favorites The Rollercoaster and Running In The Dust. If you are fans of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and still have no clue who Primal Fear is, may I suggest you take a crash course into what this thrilling band is all about! A live Primal Fear show is an experience not to be missed!

DX0A6389Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody

All this and Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody too! Fans here in the Southland have been waiting for a lifetime to see this legendary band in a live show – and the set was nothing short of mesmerizing. After an overture setting the tone for the auditory odyssey ahead, maestro Turilli and the Rhapsody membership emerged, kicking off the sonic intrigue with Knightrider Of Doom from their 2009 magnum opus Power Of The Dragonflame. Immediately after, the collective engaged in the almighty refrains of Rosenkreuz (The Rose and the Cross) from the recently unleashed Prometheus, Symphonia Ignis Divinus masterwork. The cinematic metal swept through the entire Grove Of Anaheim, transporting the audience into a captivating realm of fantasy and adventure. Luca Turilli is a true visionary within the realm of cinematic metal, and with his comrades at arms, presented the Rhapsody entreaties with an exhilarating sense of style and showmanship.

The band performed songs from their grand and illustrious career, including Land Of Immortals, The Pride Of The Tyrant, and Dawn Of Victory. The brand new selectioms Prometheus and Il Cigno Nero exhibited Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody at the very height of their creative energies, still ready to enrapture the world with their latest and greatest tapestries. And I must say, vocalist Alessandro Conti performs with a passion and commitment that is stunning to witness! Conti has a majestic presence with a classically trained voice that sent the material soaring into the stratosphere! Even though it was way after 11 on a weeknight, nothing mattered but the magic of the moment, and Rhapsody unveiled a performance that rang through the hearts and minds of the fans. Here is hoping we see a whole lot more of Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody in the near future! Watch for an interview with the immensely talented Luca Turilli, coming soon to Highwire Daze Online!
