LOST & FOUND by COREY CROWDER (Self-released CD)
After the vastly underrated Gold & The Sand which found Corey Crowder signed to Tooth & Nail Records – one year later the artist is on his own again, but still as creative as ever. While his previous effort was a thunderously produced rockin’ effort, Crowder’s latest offering Lost & Found is a quieter, more intimate release. While Crowder once again sounds like he’s singing just to the listener (his best and most consistent trademark), the music has taken a turn to the alternative country/blues side of things. This is a truly stunning progression that should thrill both old fans and newer converts alike.
Bring It On Back kicks the album off on a wondrous note – a wildly infectious song that could make it on the airwaves with the greatest of ease. Head On Home is bluesy and ethereal, taking the listener on a trip to the Southern way of the musical spectrum. When My Ship Comes In is hopeful and positive – a folk-style effort that would do the likes of Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot proud. Down And Dirty shows Crowder excelling as a storyteller, with a haunting steel pedal added in for definitive measure. Other tracks of note include the introspective Just For Us, the wistful strains of Happy Man, and the romantic inflections of The Sailboat Scream.
Corey Crowder has grown tremendously as a singer / songwriter – and Lost & Found is certainly a convincing step forward for a musician whose music and lyrical stories are truly timeless. Calming and reflective, this is one disc you’ll want to spin time and again. Info: www.myspace.com/coreycrowder (Kenneth Morton)
