American Opera

american opera smallerIntroduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
Allow myself to introduce myself. I am John. I am the only member of American Opera. I am based out of New York City .

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
I’ve played Warped Tour in the past but this is the first time that I’ll be on the tour for an extended period of time.
I’m looking forward to singing my heart out, meeting some rad people, and watching awesome bands. I’m also looking forward to avoiding those chicks who don’t wear enough clothes, avoiding those dudes who carry around signs that say “free breast exams” (those dudes are NOT doctors, trust me), and applying my own sunscreen.

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Drink lots and lots of water. Pace yourself. Avoid those girls who don’t wear enough clothes and avoid those dudes giving free breast exams. And don’t forget your sunscreen!

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
I’ll be stomping my feet and yelling at the top of my lungs. If you’re lucky I’ll talk about pro wrestling.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
I have a new record coming out this summer called “Your Songs“. All of the songs are inspired by true stories that fans sent in about their own lives and experiences.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
My songs are about doing what you want to do with your life. I love to tour. I love to sing. I sing about singing and chasing my dream.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Not early enough, if you ask me! I like to get to bed EARLY. Let’s start these shows at 7:30 AM and wrap them up by 2:30 PM so I can get a good nap in before dinner.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Everything strange and unusual happens on the road. I feel like I’m a weirdo magnet. I’ve gone down water slides with geese, sleeping band members have been peed on by dogs, a bum once tried to fight me for $3 that he already owned. A blind cat scratched me with its weird eye, a mouse stowed away in our van which resulted in 6 grown men screaming like sissy girls… You know, that sort of stuff.

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Last summer I had the opportunity to open up for my favorite band, Cursive. That was amazing. I’d like to do that again. I would love to open up for Modest Mouse. And I’d love to open up Wrestlemania one day. Those are my favorite bands and I love wrestling.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Have fun. Drink water and apply sunscreen (not the other way around). Please avoid those scantily clad girls and those douchey breast examiners. And most importantly, FIND YOUR NEW FAVORITE BAND!

Art Of Shock

artbbq1Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
My name is Art Geezar, I’m the singer in ART OF SHOCK from Hollywood California.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
It is the first time we do the tour, we wanna go out there, kick major ass, make a lot of new friends and throw some amazing parties with the BBQ’s backstage.  (Editor’s Note: Art Of Shock is the Official Vans Warped Tour BBQ Band this year)

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Passion, fury, love, a big Rock and Roll spectacle!

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
We’re releasing a new EP this summer called “OPEN THE CAGE“, the beast is ready storm out and take over the world.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
OPEN THE CAGE is about challenging yourself and getting ready for the big fight of life.
WE DON’T CARE WHO YOU ARE is about uniting as a society against abuse and injustice.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
That makes no difference to us, we always give our 100%

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
I would be worried if nothing strange and unusual happens!

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
I would like to open for Queen to take a lesson from the masters!

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Go and Rock with ART OF SHOCK, stay hydrated and Rock out!

August Burns Red

augustburns2013Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
My name is JB Brubaker. I play guitar for August Burns Red. We are based out of Lancaster, PA.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
This is our third time doing the tour. We did a few dates in 2008 on the Smart Punk stage and then did the entire tour on the main stage in 2011. I’m most looking forward to playing every day for a ton of people under the bright summer sun. The environment on Warped is like no other. I also can’t wait to hang out with some of my best friends in other bands all summer.

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Figure out the best time to get in line for catering early on in the tour. The lines can be brutal and it’s hot so standing in the sun waiting for food is a drag. Be sure to store lots of extra water on your bus. Try to schedule your off days in different hotels than the tour or you’ll have to wait forever to check in and get a much needed shower.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
A fast moving set where we cram as many songs as we can into our time slot. Less talking, more playing. We’re going to keep it high energy from start to finish.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our new full length album is called Rescue & Restore. The title is about trying to make metalcore an interesting and exciting genre like it used to be. It’s so watered down with uninspired copy cat bands and as a result people are understandably getting bored with it. The title is about challenging ourselves and our peers to try and pump some new blood back into the genre.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
We’ll be playing the song “Composure” from the album Messengers. It was inspired by a friend of ours who went through a really rough patch in his life. It talks about relying on your friends to help pull you through the darkness instead of dwelling on the past.
Another song is “White Washed” from our album Constellations. This song was inspired by an experience we had with an extremely judgmental person in a leadership position who was basically setting a horrible example for lots of impressionable minds.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Does the show start at 11:30am now? I’ve been an early bird over the past six months or so, so I’ll be ready to rock whenever we are asked to play. If you play in the morning you have the rest of the day to do whatever you want.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
No, nothing odd has actually ever happened to me on tour.

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
I think it’d be awesome to play with The Arcade Fire. Their fans might hate us but I love that band and it would be an honor to share the stage with them.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Drink lots of water and get a good nights rest the day before. It is a long hot day but totally worth it. Have fun!

Citizen

3ue5_CitizenFINAL_1Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
I’m Nick Hamm. I play guitar in Citizen and we’re from Toledo, OH.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
I think it’s going to be really cool to be touring in a bus. That’s a pretty crazy experience for a band our size and people our age. That’ll be really nice. Besides that, playing to a new bunch of people should be very beneficial to us. Yep, it’s our first time on the tour.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
I usually don’t know what to say when it comes to questions like this but I think people can expect energy. We don’t really let ourselves die down just because we’re on a bigger stage or there’s a barrier or we’re outside. We approach bigger shows and stages just like we would a small club show.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our debut full length is coming out on June 11th and it’s titled “Youth“. We thought the title was appropriate because a lot of the subject matter is based on the problems you go through as you’re growing up. We also just thought it sounded cool…

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
You will definitely be hearing an older song called “Drown” and a newer one called “The Summer“. Both have pretty sad lyrics I suppose. Drown mainly touches on isolation and The Summer is a pretty personal song to Mat about losing someone you care about.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
I don’t really know what to expect either way so I’m pretty stoked to even be on it! Waking up early is going to suck I’m sure though.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
One time, a guy we stayed with tried to touch us inappropriately. That’s probably the weirdest thing to happen. Besides that, Mat works out really hard and then ends up smelling weird. That isn’t really weird but it sucks.

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Nirvana. I don’t even need to explain that one.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Come watch us and maybe pick up our new record if you have spare cash. Thanks y’all.

Crown The Empire

crown the empire new nov 2012 smaller use thisIntroduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
My name is Andy Leo. I sing for Crown The Empire.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
It is our first time out, and we’re so excited to be headlining the Ernie Ball stage. We actually tried the Battle of the Bands to play the stage when we were first starting out, and lost. To come back 3 years later and headline is a dream come true. We’re excited to just meet and hangout with all of the bands that are on the tour.

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
A very close member of our team Brendan Barone has done the tour before, and his only advice to us has been ‘Stay out of the sun as much as possible’. Those kids that go out are there for 1 day – we’re out for 2 months. So we’re gonna be on the hunt for shade to say the least.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
We’re going to try and bring all of the theatrics that we have at a normal show to the outdoor setting. Since we can’t do as much for on stage production, we’re gonna try to make it a more exciting set by making things a little heavier. Expect some mosh pits.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
The Fallout is our debut LP that we released last November through Rise Records. The title was inspired by the concept of the record, which is a love story at the end of the world.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
Children of Love – The whole song is basically about oppression that’s been dished out by older generations and left for us to pick up.
Memories of a Broken Heart – this song deals with the aftermath of a catastrophe, be it a physical or emotional event. The song is about reflecting on the past, and starting over.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
We’re just happy to be a part of things, no matter when we play.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
We’ve had just about anything that could happen, happen. Band members go missing, Trailer coming detached from our bus, outlets exploding in the van. All in all, I’d say we’re probably responsible for more “Unusual stories” than we are subject to them.

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Fall Out Boy. It would be amazing to share the stage with one of our biggest influences, and as our music progresses, it would be amazing to see how an audience like that would respond.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
If you haven’t met us, please take the opportunity to come see us at our tent for signings and hangouts all summer long. And be ready for a fucking show.

Emily’s Army

emilysarmy1Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
My name is Cole Michael Becker (aged 17 and 2/3) and I play the guitar and sing, and I live in the greatest city on Earth (Oakland California)

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
This is actually my second time on tour and I am without a doubt looking forward most to meeting all the cool new people and reconnecting with friends from last year. Everyone is so great out there!

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Bring lots of extra socks, and develop a means of bathing yourself- some prefer babywipes,  I personally like the Dr. Bronner’s bucket method. Also see as many new bands as possible!

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Unparalleled young and raw energy and tight harmonies and lots of fun.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our up and coming album Lost at 17 is inspired by the highest highs and lowest lows of being a teenager and coming into your own as an adult.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
War is about challenging the powers that be and questioning the morals and actions of the United States in global politics.
Lost at 17 is about getting lost in between childhood and adulthood, getting stretched in many different directions and momentarily losing track of your direction in life.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
I’m totally stoked! There is nothing I love more than mornings honestly!  It’s perfect because that is right before it gets really really hot.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
We played at this place called The Hall of the Woods in Olympia once– an abandoned revivalist church in the middle of the woods that was repainted black and is one of five points that compose a pentagram on a map of Olympia. It was definitely out of the realm of normality…

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Old Crow Medicine Show; only because I would want to hang out with them and play bluegrass with them for hours on end.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
If you see a guy in a speedo telling you to go to see Emily’s Army, do it!

Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions!
No problem!  I’m stoked for this summer

Handguns

handguns1Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
My name is Taylor and I sing. We are spread out all over the country so we hail from the United States of America.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
We’re all looking forward to hanging out with our friends and seeing a bunch of great bands all summer long. Handguns has been following Warped Tour since 2009.

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Stay Hydrated.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
We get up there and try to put on the best show possible. We like to be tight as a band but we also have a lot of fun.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
We have a full length record out called Angst. All the songs on the record are about real life experiences. The title comes from all of the anxiety we endure in daily life.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
Porch Light and The War at Home. Porch Light is about finding your place in life. The War at Home is about all the times me and my mother were at each others throats.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
As long as we get our rest before hand, we should be fine.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
There are so many things that have happened, that it’s hard to remember. The other day in Canada we had to take a ferry and we had never done that before so that was pretty unusual.

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Probably Blink or Green Day. They are some of the founding fathers of this genre, so it would be very unreal opening up for either of those bands.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
We play the Kevin Says stage. Come hang out and have a good time!
