WarpedTour16_Color_Journeys pt 1Countdown to Vans Warped Tour 2016 – Part 1

Welcome to the Highwire Daze Annual Countdown To Vans Warped Tour!  Now in its 22nd year, Vans Warped Tour is the largest traveling music festival in the United States, and the longest-running touring music festival in North America. Originally conceived by founder Kevin Lyman in 1995 as an eclectic alternative rock festival, with a focus on punk rock, over the years the tour has grown to include a multitude of genres, including metal, hip hop, reggae, pop and more.

This year’s edition of the Vans Warped Tour kicks off in Dallas, Texas on June 24th and concludes in Portland, Oregon on August 13th.  Visit the Official Vans Warped Tour website for cities and tour dates here!

In the spotlight in Part One of our Warped Tour Countdown, we are featuring four bands ready to break it on out over the long hot summer of 2016!  Meet Dash|Ten, From Ashes To New, More To Monroe, and Too Close To Touch!

DashtenDash|Ten

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
Hey, what’s up everyone? We are Corrin (vocals and bass) and Pete (drums) of Dash|Ten. Our band is based out of Louisville, KY.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour this year?
Corrin: The fans! The other bands! Basically, the people.
Pete: Yeah, just being a part of the whole thing in general. Everything from the music, to the food, to the parties. There’s just such a family vibe out there on the road with everyone involved. It’s just such a cool thing to be a part of.

What advice would you give to a band about to be on Warped for the first time?
Pete: Just buckle up and soak it all in. It’s one long tour and you gotta pace yourself out there. Drink plenty of water and don’t skip meals. I sound like a mother….
Corrin: Haha you sure do. It’s true, though. This year is 42 dates. That’s no small feat, especially for a band that hasn’t done a sweltering, daytime, outdoor festival show every day for months. There are so many bands, you really need to hustle to make sure people know when and where you’re playing. So make sure to fuel up, because you won’t stop moving until it’s time for bus call at night!

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Pete: Hopefully, one could expect to see just a no frills, power trio laying it down up there. You’re gonna see some nasty guitar licks, powerful vocals, and (hopefully) me not dropping my sticks.
Corrin: Pete’s being humble. He’s a kickass drummer (though he has dropped his sticks once in a while, haha). But yeah, I agree. We aren’t frilly, we don’t have any backing tracks or fancy DJ skills. We’re just three kids rocking out on stage and we like it that way.

What inspired your upcoming self-titled album?
Corrin: The album was really meant to sound raw and organic. We’ve seen so many bands try to live up to some ideal studio production when they play live, whether it’s adding some backing tracks or using live auto tune. No judgement about how anyone else chooses to do it, but we really wanted the album to sound like you just walked into a room and a power trio was playing their songs. There’s a minimal amount of editing, most of the performances were recorded in one take.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and explain what inspired the lyrics.
Corrin: “The Scene” talks about some angst we have about the music industry – just how “packaged” you can become if you’re not careful, and how so many people are ready to make promises and take your money to capitalize on your dreams. In the end, dressing the part or playing a fancy guitar won’t will help you “make it” any better than just being real and keeping up the hustle. Stay hungry.

What You Wanted” is a song about people that try to keep you down. I don’t know why there are people in the world who would rather see others fail than just do well themselves, but it’s a scary reality. When I wrote the lyrics, there was one dude in my life that just did everything in his power to keep me in limbo, keep me from moving on to whatever great dream was in front of me. The song was therapy, really, because once it was written I was finally able to break free.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Pete: Honestly, I don’t mind them at all. It frees up the day for me so I can get out there and really check out some of the other bands.
Corrin: It IS a great way to see other bands, which is really a cool part of the tour. And though it’s tougher to get as many people to the stage, it does give us a cool opportunity to meet more of them one-on-one after the set, pay a little extra attention to the fans who made sure they were there that early. They deserve it!

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Pete: The weirdest thing I’ve ever seen happen on the road was when somebody dropped a water balloon off an overpass and ended up hitting the windshield of a tour bus. It smashed up the window pretty good and cut the bus driver. Luckily it wasn’t that serious and no one got killed. It could have been a lot worse!
Corrin: Dude, that was so crazy. If you ever think of dropping a water balloon off a bridge into moving traffic DON’T! It looked like a boulder went through the windshield, and there was glass all the way back to the bunks. So super dangerous.

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Pete: Foo Fighters. I think our style would fit well with their crowd. Plus, I would get to hang with Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins!
Corrin: Pete stole mine! I’m not prone to being starstruck, but Dave Grohl is definitely somebody I would have trouble not “fan-girl”ing over. I’d also be totally down with touring with Jimmy Eat World, though. I hear they’re super rad guys, and I totally heart that band.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Pete: Eat breakfast, drink water, and wear sunscreen out there. It’s a long day out there in the sun, and you want to make sure you last long enough to see all your favorite bands. Oh yeah, and come see us!
Corrin: Yeah, come see our set! Also, our merch tent will be sponsored by the U.S. Army, and they’re going to have our debut album free there, plus custom dog tags, Dash|Ten shirts, posters, you name it. Everything will be $0, so you can save up your merch money and support more of the other bands!

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
Hey, it’s Matt (vocals, guitar, electronics) and I’m based out of Lancaster, PA.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
I can’t wait to play in front of all of the fans that Warped brings out annually! This is my 1st Warped Tour, but hopefully not the last.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
I think I can sum it up into 1 word….Energy.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
We just released our debut album “Day One”. The title was inspired by the story behind our band. The name From Ashes to New, the album Day One, and our songs are all a story about rebuilding and never giving up hope.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
“Through It All” and “My Fight”. Through It All is inspired by relationships changing our lives and leaving us wondering if it was a good or bad thing that happened and My Fight is my song about being told I wasn’t good enough to pursue my dreams and how I refused to back down.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
It will definitely be different, but as long as we can sleep some the night before it shouldn’t be too bad. It could work to our advantage on some of those brutal, hot summer days!

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Our touring vehicle seems to never want to let us go home after the tour is over. Something seems to break at the end of every tour.

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
I’d love to open for Of Mice & Men. They’ve been very influential on me over the last few years. I love the way they take their own approach on almost everything they do.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Well the obvious is, make sure you come see us on the Monster Stage North! The other thing is the same message I have for everyone, don’t let anyone dictate your life. Be what you want and show those who say you can’t why they are wrong. Go get yours!

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
Hey I’m Johnny Jamison and I slappa da bass. Hey I’m Chris D’Aquino and I play guitar. Hey I’m Sam Smisek and I play guitar. My name is Jacob Maughan and I play drums in the Frederick based band More to Monroe.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
This will be our first year on Warped and what we’re looking most forward to is probably the Barbeques that take place at the end of each day.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Four moist men who get a little too carried away with their music.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our most recent release is called Appalachia and the name is inspired from our location which is along the Appalachian Mountains. Appalachia is a conceptual idea that follows the life of a kid named Jack, which is the name of the first track on the EP, and tells his story through each song.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
The first song, Jack, begins where the main character is running away from home and basically ends up deep into woods. Another song called 500 Days is the third track on the EP and this song dives deeper into the persona of Jack revealing what he’s feeling after spending time on his own. 500 Days in the climax of the EP or story about Jack.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Any slot on Warped Tour is better than no Warped Tour at all ; ).

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
There is always a daily occurrence of unusual happenings on the road. Probably the most memorable was when we got in a “feud” with some college girls at a Waffle House at 1:00 in the morning. It did not end well….

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Underoath is definitely one of the many bands that we would love to open up for.

Too Close To Touch

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
I’m Keaton Pierce, and I sing for Too Close To Touch. We’re based out of Lexington, KY.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
This is our first time on the tour! Since I was young, I’ve always dreamt of being on the tour. It’s exciting to me to be able to perform on such a huge platform and reach so many new people. Not to mention, play alongside bands that I have looked up to for years. It will be an amazing time.

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Feels like the fiiiiirst time. Feels like the very first time.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Expect an energetic and emotional set. We channel every feeling perceived from the record into each song we play. We get wrapped up in the songs in a live setting, and every one has their own unique way of expressing that through each song.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Though we are currently working on LP2, the latest album released is our debut record ‘Nerve Endings’. Feeling starts and ends in the nerves of a person and this entire record revolves around the discovery of a new feeling that one attains through the loss of an old one. Old feelings were washed away through the creation of these songs and new ones budded. It’s an emotional journey and story of loss, release, and rebirth.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
Two songs we will be playing are “Nerve Endings” and “Hell to Pay”. Both songs are an inside look on the struggle of finding yourself through loss. Whether it be mental or material loss, they both pick at the insides of ones feelings and emotions. I suggest delving deeper into both songs to truly make the emotional connection, because no words I can type can do either song justice, I believe.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
We’ll approach every set, regardless of time or audience number, the same. We put an equal amount of effort and emotion into every set we play. Expect 110% from us, despite whatever time in the day we may play.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
You can ask our van, Murph, about all that. P.S. The name Murph comes from Murphy’s Law. I think you can put two and two together. 😉

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Either Incubus, or more realistically, Underoath. Both are bands that molded me as a musician and influenced me in their own unique way. Though, I will say that I just saw Underoath on their return tour in L.A. a few nights ago and have never felt emotion from a live show like I did that night. I want to have that effect on the masses like they did. It was truly an inspirational show.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Warped Tour attendees- come feel with us. Let us pour our hearts out to you every day, and take this emotional and powerful journey with us. We do this for you, and without you none of it would be possible. Also, thank you… really.
