Deadly Carnage and the Enigmatic Manthe

deadlymanthe1Welcome to the grim and inspired reveries of Deadly Carnage – a post blackened doom band from North Italy. Exploration into the dark recesses of their latest magnum opus Manthe will set the imagination in flight.  Now available worldwide through ATMF Records, Manthe is as brilliant as it is enigmatic – a journey though sound that should absolutely thrill music aficionados all over the dying world.  Here is a recent interview we conducted with Deadly Carnage to find out more about their vast and surreal compositions.  Read on…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Deadly Carnage, and how long the band has been together.
I’m Adres, the bass player, Deadly Carnage was founded by me and Marco (drums) in 2005. During the first period we did not have much expectation, we just wanted to play what we liked. Now the time has passed, we are changed, and even our music has evolved: it has become more rational, but the spirit of the beginning has remained the same. We play exactly what we want to play, without being influenced by the opinions of others. Deadly Carnage is a creature evolving, this is the only thing that will never change.

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there?
We live in Rimini, a seaside town in the North East of Italy at south of Venice. Here in our area there are a lot of bands, but just a few of them are really good..but maybe I’m being too picky. In our area there are also very interesting concerts, but in the past they were more ones.

deadlycover1Is there any story or concept behind the title Manthe?
The album title is a mystery, you will not find the word “Manthe” in a dictionary, it’s a mysterious word with a real meaning. We want to keep the secret about the meaning of this word, it is an enigma, and we hope that someone will be able to solve it and find out it’s meaning someday.

Select two songs from Manthe and what inspired the lyrics.
The first song I choose is “Il Ciclo della Forgia“, it is the only song on the album sung in Italian, I think that is because it is important to explain its meaning to those who do not know our language. “Il Ciclo della Forgia” is a cry against the totalitarian mass-thought, is a hymn to free the independent thought. The second song that I choose is “Drowned Hope,” my favourite, is about loss and find something to love.  It could be a mournful love or a necessary change. Hope isn’t gone, as well as the title could be a paradox. I think that this is the last thing before “we’ll wave to each other”, as someone said…

Who did the artwork for Manthe and how much input did you have on it?
The artwork for “Manthe” was conceived and created by me (Adres) and Alexios, to realize we were helped by a girl, a great artist who created the images going around in our heads. The visual dimension of our music is extremely important for us, we have devoted much time for the creation of the booklet. I am convinced that the artwork for “Manthe“, with its symbolic images, best represents the concepts of lyrics and that its abstract nature is perfectly suited to the various interpretations of our songs. Sometimes the images on our artwork may look like the Rorschach inkblots, so the interpretation is subjective..

What could one expect from a live Deadly Carnage show?
We give great importance to our live show, we try to create a visual atmosphere similar to the emotions conveyed by our music. In our performances we like to let the public in the dark, put the lights dim and cold on stage and use a lot of smoke to create an unreal experience. We are a live band that is carried by the music, we’re not a band that performs coldly his songs.

If Deadly Carnage could open up for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Probably I’m speaking for myself, but if I had to choose a band I’d say My Dying Bride! For me it would be the ultimate aspiration. The reason is simple: My Dying Bride are my biggest inspiration ever since I started playing, their music has been central to my career as a musician.

Are you or any of the other members involved with any other bands outside of Deadly Carnage?
We are also active in other musical projects, for example, I have a Dark Ambient solo project, Alexios and Dave, our guitarists are respectively singer and guitarist in a progressive and an hardcore band. The person to have more side project is Marco , our drummer, he has worked as a session member in many bands between 2010 and 2013, including international bands. Now he abandoned many of these projects, but it has many records to his credit. Musically speaking, we are also very active in musicians from different genres of extreme metal.

What is your favorite Italian beer of choice and why?
I swear that this is the first time someone asked me this in an interview! My favorite italian beer is definitely Peroni beer! The reason is simple: it is the perfect beer for any occasion, especially before a concert!

What’s up next for Deadly Carnage?
We are people who do not like to sit still! Our goal now is to promote “Manthe” with live events and start composing new material. There is already something new we’re working on!

Any final words of wisdom?
