Read on…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Deserted Fear, and how long the band has been together.
Hello Ken! This is Fabian from DESERTED FEAR. I am the guitar player and played also the bass on our upcoming album MY EMPIRE. With me are Mahne on the vocals and also on guitar, Simon on the drums and when we play live, bass player Albi is with us. Mahne and me started the band back in 2007. Later Simon joined us and in 2010 we recorded our first 4 track demo. Now we are in 2012 and happy to release our first full length album. The beginning was difficult by two but now we are complete and have some killing DEATH METAL for you guys!
Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there?
We are from Eisenberg/Thuringia, a small town with 9000 people in East Germany. The local music scene is not the best. We have a metal core and a rock band here and we are the sole real metal band. Also all metal heads here in town can be counted on two hands. But in Jena, 30 km far from us, is some more action. Often tours with bands like KRISIUN, INCANTATION or whatever taking place there. That’s cool and we have been also several times on stage in fucking Jena.
Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Of course! Our friends ROGASH from Jena and DEFLORATION from Pößneck. Two bands with cool guys and brutal music! I will do the recording for the first full length of ROGASH, so stay tuned and beware!
Is there any story or concept behind the CD title My Empire?
First it should be named FIELD OF DEATH. But during the artwork was drawn, we made the song MY EMPIRE. This song is so full of energy and it’s much feeling in it, that we wanted to title the album MY EMPIRE. And yeah, the final artwork fits best to the song! So that’s the concept behind, haha.
Select any two songs from My Empire and what inspired the lyrics.
THE BLACK INCANTATION is about some killing rituals and FIELD OF DEATH about World War two. I don’t know what inspired us. We don’t think much about the themes, it’s more a feeling and it just flows out of us. I love all songs on MY EMPIRE. Each song has its own vibe and kills.
What could one expect from a live Deserted Fear show?
Energy and head banging. We have much fun on stage and we give always 100%. We are not entertainers, talk about funny things or make games with the audience. It’s just pure Death Metal and head banging, as we like it as well and it should be!
Who are some of the bigger bands you have opened for in the past and is there any particular show that really stood out for you?
We played our first festivals this summer and there were also bands like OBITUARY, DEMONICAL and so on. But we never played a tour support until now, just cool club shows on the weekend with mostly local acts. Very cool has been the shows last week in Dresden and some months ago in Aalen with our friends in Revel in Flesh. Total self-destruction, band and audience!
Has Deserted Fear ever played here in the States or plan to do so in future days?
No, we have never been in the States, but we hope to get the chance one day to come over for some shows! That’s not in our hand, but if we get an offer, we would be definitely happy about that!
Who did the cover art for My Empire and how much input did you have on it?
We asked Thomas “NECROMANIAC” Westphal for a logo and an artwork. We told him our idea with FIELD OF DEATH and the war stuff. Haha, he realized nothing of our ideas! Like I said, we thought about to name the album MY EMPIRE during when he made the artwork and the result was fucking awesome and fits best to the song and the whole album. Crazy…
Germany is very well known for their BEER!!! What is your favorite beer of choice and why?
Hard to say, but I think that the local ROSEN beer from Pößneck and also JEVER from the far north are my favorite. Why I like these beers? Because they make me fucking drunken! Mostly I prefer beers with a harsh taste. We have much little breweries in Germany and it’s nearly impossible to taste all beers but I work on it, haha.
Are you or any of the other Deserted Fear members involved with any other bands or projects?
Our bass player Albi has his project KINGDOM OF BLOOD and Simon drums also in other projects. I will do recordings for other bands in the future and together with Simon we will offer some studio session drumming. Sadly I have no time for some other bands. For Mahne it’s also just DESERTED FEAR.
What’s up next in the New Year for Deserted Fear?
Hopefully much live shows! The album is coming out on 28. September and the reviews are great until now. So we really looking forward what will come!
Any final words of wisdom?
