Design The Skyline, Silence The Messenger, and Amyst: A Tour Preview

The compelling experimental entity Design The Skyline has announced a late summer tour that will take them all across the country.   The band will be supported on all dates by Amyst and Silence The Messenger.

All three collectives have been gaining a good deal of attention on their own, and now joining forces for the first time, the trio is more then ready and willing to blow out of the rooftops of concert venues everywhere!

The tour kicks off in Fort Worth, Texas (the home state of both Design The Skyline and Silence The Messenger) on August 17th, concluding in Trenton, New Jersey on September 9th.  A local stop will include August 22nd at the Cobalt Cafe in Canoga Park, presented by the folks at Two Hearts Promotions.

Highwire Daze recently had the opportunity to interview all three of the participating bands to find out about what they are looking forward to the most from this particular tour, their songs and lyrics, strange happenings from the road, and other mind boggling topics.  Read on…

DESIGN THE SKYLINE

Introduce yourself, and tell me what you do in Design The Skyline, and how long the band has been together?
I’m Dani Doom and I do vocals, I’m Eric Azure and I do vocal as well. My names is Matt Ryan and I play lead guitar and I’m Julian Reckless and I play rhythm guitar. Hello, I’m Dean-o Ram and I play the bass. I’m James Lemos (Keebler) and I play the snyths. And I am John 2.0, the latest addition to the band I play the drums.

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like?
We are based out of Corpus Christi, Texas – a growing city by the bay.  Our local scene has always been really big for decades. Being there are less and less shows now here, when there actually is one it is always packed to the max and filled with crazy energy!

What do you look forward to the most about the upcoming tour with Amyst and Silence The Messenger?
Other then the crazy adventures and stories that are in store, being able to meet and talk with our fans is what we look for the most!

What could one expect from a live Design The Skyline show?
You can expect a lot of insane, exciting, chaotic energy! We love it the most when people come up to us after the show and tell us how much they have underestimated and doubted our performance and that now we can consider them a true fan!

Do you have any unusual or horror stories from touring that you could share?
This one time we stayed with a friend who lived in the middle of nowhere and heard talk of a haunted building, so late at night we traveled deep in the woods to find an abandoned insane asylum! We had to go through barb wire that was on the ground from the fence to get inside –  and when we pushed the front doors open, a big gust of wind came out just like in the movies! And the first thing we see is a huge lobby with a broken staircase traveling to the second floor – everywhere you looked it suddenly felt like there were tons of eyes on you! After going further in we abruptly heard a really heavy object slam to the ground in the distance and echoed throughout the whole building! It sent chills down our spines which then we quickly looked at each other and decided to leave!

What is the name of your current album or EP and is there any story behind the title?
Our debut album is entitled “Nevaeh“. It basically captures all the love we have for all the different types of music, being able to push the boundaries of music and exceed the limitations.  We formulated an experimental concoction of devastatingly melodic and technically challenging metal infused with atmospheric, catchy pop tunes which also includes many different electronic/jazz aspects. We wanted to radically change the moods and tempos during each song to stretch the boundaries to your average track.

Select two songs you will probably play on this tour and what inspired the lyrics?
The first song would be Crystal Swords Kill The Hordes, this would be one of our heaviest songs which always gets the crowd off their feet! These lyrics were inspired through the corruption and hatred throughout the world. As for the second song, you guys can be excepting some new material – and we will leave it at that until you see it for yourself!

What band or artist would someone be very surprised to find out that you listen to while out on the road?
Funny that you mention that, we always listen to the most random material while out on the road anywhere from Japanese rock to rap. We love receiving local artist’s albums, we listen to just about everyone single one we receive! Which is a lot of them!

If your music was a donut, what kind would it be and why?
Haha, we’d like to consider our music to be a glazed donut with multi colored sprinkles signifying the different aspects we conjured into a single donut!

Do you have any messages for fans out here in the Southern California area?
We absolutely love So Cal! Be sure to stop by our merch table and say hello to us!

AMYST

Introduce yourself, and tell me what you do in Amyst, and how long the band has been together?
Pavlo Fenik – Vocals
Vasil Fenik – Vocals
Bob Ash – Guitar
Jesse Meiring – Drums
Scott Pips – Bass

Brothers Pavlo and Vasil started the band and wrote The Eastern Silhouette which was released in December 2009

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like?
Philadelphia. This genre is very underground in Philly.

What do you look forward to the most about the upcoming tour with Design The Skyline and Silence The Messenger?
Meeting new fans that we have never met before because we’ve never been that far out to the west side of the country. And hopefully introducing our music to people we have never reached out to before.

What could one expect from a live Amyst show?
Lots of contrast between heavy and pop parts of songs, reaching out to a wide range of audiences.

Do you have any unusual or horror stories from touring that you could share?
We lost a lot of money gambling in Oklahoma, but we love Waffle House.

What is the name of your current album or EP and is there any story behind the title?
Seeker” the entire EP is basically about a relationship separated by an ocean, so in a sense, seeker applies to the male figure who is “seeking” a way to confront his feelings.

Select two songs you will probably play on this tour and what inspired the lyrics?
Fall Asleep Under The Sky – lyrics are based on a love/hate relationship

To Sketch Memories In Stars – lyrics are about being across the ocean from the girl you love and trying to get through it

What band or artist would someone be very surprised to find out that you listen to while out on the road?
Rihanna – we actually get lots of inspiration from Rihanna, she’s even the background picture on our desktop at home

If your music was a donut, what kind would it be and why?
Boston Cream cause its the best flavor and we are indeed the best.

Do you have any messages for fans out here in the Southern California area?
We can’t wait to meet every single one of you and hope you are all open to the ideas we bring to stage and in our recordings.

SILENCE THE MESSENGER

Introduce yourself, and tell me what you do in Silence The Messenger, and how long the band has been together?
I’m Steve and I’m the vocalist for Silence The Messenger. The band has been together for almost 5 years now.

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like?
We’re based out of San Antonio, TX. We have a very strong local scene here! We’ve got plenty of bands for all kinds of shows that come to town, and everybody is really supportive of one another!

What do you look forward to the most about the upcoming tour with Design The Skyline and Amyst?
As much as we love metal, and being on metal tours, we’re really excited to be on tour with Design The Skyline and Amyst because it will put us in front of a different kind of crowd than we’re used to! Hopefully it broadens our fan base and we get to meet some new people!

What could one expect from a live Silence The Messenger show?
Intensity. We put everything we have into our live show, and you can expect nothing less than that every single night. As much as people come to shows because they love the music, we believe people should truly get their money’s worth by not only getting to hear great songs, but also getting to witness a great performance by the artists! So we do our best to give the crowd something extremely memorable for them to look back on, and something they can look forward to next time they see us.

Do you have any unusual or horror stories from touring that you could share?
The second day into our very first tour a couple years ago, our van’s engine literally caught on fire while we were driving through Refugio, TX at around 6:00 in the morning. We quickly pulled over and used every water bottle we had to put the flames out. We didn’t really have any choice but to get the van towed and sold for parts. Luckily I have incredibly supportive parents, and they both left work, and drove us my Toyota 4Runner from over two hours away. We all crammed in, and finished the last two weeks of the tour in my 4Runner. That’s one story we’ll never forget.

What is the name of your current album or EP and is there any story behind the title?
Our current EP is entitled “Buried“. The title basically keeps it simple, and sums up what each song is about on the album. To be honest, the songs are simply about me moving on from bad situations, and losing people that I love. The idea behind the title is taking every crappy thing that has happened, “burying” it, and never looking back. You can buy it on iTunes, Amazon, Napster, our online merch store, or pick it up at a show!

Select two songs you will probably play on this tour and what inspired the lyrics?
One song I can guarantee you we’ll be playing is the second to last track of “Buried“, and it’s called “Destructionist“. Another song we’ll probably be playing is one of our new songs that you won’t find on our EP, it’s called “Endless Suffering“. The lyrics to each of those, and all of my songs, are simply me just being pissed off at all the things that seem to continually go wrong in my life. Sometimes I write metaphorically, sometimes I’m very literal and to the point, but the idea is the same behind all the songs. I don’t write about religion, politics, or anything that I feel is going to change the world, I’m simply just pissed off and have a lot of aggression to express, and I feel like a lot of people can relate to that haha.

What band or artist would someone be very surprised to find out that you listen to while out on the road?
It’s hard to narrow it down to just one artist because we listen to a huge variety of stuff on tour and at home, but I know one band that we all love, and jam regularly, is Lydia. Unfortunately, they’re not together anymore, but we still play their albums like they are. Their songs are just really cool and easy to listen and sing along to. Love that band.

If your music was a donut, what kind would it be and why?
If we were a doughnut, I’d have to say we’d be a Bacon Maple Bar from the infamous “Voodoo Doughnut” in Portland, OR. It’s part classic doughnut, that everybody can enjoy, but it keeps things interesting and new by adding bacon on the top. The same goes for our music. We like to have things in our music that almost any metal fan would enjoy, but throwing in some parts that keep things fresh and interesting!

Do you have any messages for fans out here in the Southern California area?
Yes! Bring us In-N-Out! Can’t wait to come back, see you guys soon!!!
