Based out of the exotic confines of Monterrey, Mexico, The Advent Equation is an astounding progressive metal band well worth seeking out. Fans of collectives such as Opeth and Katatonia will surely be intrigued by the stunning reveries The Advent Equation unleashes. Their debut album is entitled Limitless Life Reflections, and was mixed and produced by Alberto “Charles” Leal at Psicofonia Productions with studio mastering by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Amon Amarth, Devin Townsend) at Fascination Street studios in Sweden. We caught up with keyboardist Esaú Garcia to find out more about this mystical band on the rise. Read on…
Introduce yourself; tell me what you do in The Advent Equation, and how long the band has been together.
Hello everyone, my name is Esau and I play synths and keyboards in the band, we are a 5 member Progressive metal group from Monterrey, Mexico. We have been working on this project since 2008. Recently we released our debut album independently.
THE ADVENT EQUATION is:
Daniel Cordoba: Guitar and growling vocals.
Margil H. Vallejo: Bass and clean vocals.
Luis Gómez: Guitar
Roberto Charles: Drums
Esaú García: Keyboards.
Our intention or main objective is to make an important contribution to the modern metal scene, by doing what we enjoy the most: writing and living by music.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
One of the biggest challenges that we have, is to break the prejudices of this country where musical market and genres are already defined, rock and metal are not commercially supported as many musicians would like.
This encourages local bands on doing things better, being more competitive, reason why we try to keep us together as much as possible
Monterrey has a lot of talent to offer, bands like Neural FX, Noosphera, Inferzenal, AVATAR and IRA, just to mention a few… all of them great musicians and friends.
Is there any overall story or concept behind the album Limitless Life Reflections?
Lyrically and musically the album goes around an existential theme throughout the songs, exploring the mind’s journey through loss and pain.
Limitless Life Reflections contains a mix of heavy guitar riffs, along with atmospheric synth leads and drums rhythm complexity, which can go from warm and calm melodic passages, to aggressive and dynamic grooves.
Select two songs from Limitless Life Reflections and what inspired the lyrical content?
Visions of Pain and Afterlife Evolutionary are two opposite songs, but at the same time they bond, since they are part of the same chapter in the whole story.
Has The Advent Equation ever toured here in the United States? If so, what was the experience like?
No, we have never toured the United States; we think it might be awesome to have some live shows over there soon.
What could one expect from a live The Advent Equation show?
We always want to involve our audience through our music and make them feel part of the show offering an energetic but at the same time atmospheric concept, trying to share the way we feel the music.
Who did the cover art for Limitless Life Reflections and how much input did you have on it?
Album artwork in general was created by Colin Mark (Rain Song Desing, London), he was the mastermind behind this piece of art, and our input consisted on providing him with the main idea and color scheme, representing the light as sign of renovation through chaos.
In this album we wanted to display entropy, the artwork reflects this decay of everything, in which we think Colin perfectly matched these ideas.
What was it like opening for Opeth and were you able to hang out with them at all?
Our experience of sharing the stage with a great band such as Opeth was so memorable; they are very professional in what they do, we had an awesome moment on stage, and in regards hanging out with them, we tried to respect their working space, by not interrupting their warm up, or pre stage rituals, we can tell that it was nice being back stage neighbors.
If you could open up for any band either now or from the past, what band would it that be and why?
Porcupine Tree, it´s a band that has our full admiration, they are high level musicians and their music is composed with many elements that we consider transcendental.
What’s up in this New Year for The Advent Equation?
We are planning some shows in our country for promoting our new album here and wherever it can be possible, be in touch with our social media pages, since a couple of surprises will be coming soon from the band, dedicated to all of our fans across the globe.
