Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Erebus Enthroned, and how long the band has been together.
Currently speaking is the mouth of Erebus Enthroned. The band was loosely formed in 2006 but in late 2009 the current line-up was brought together, this line-up having remained until the present and what we feel is the band’s most genuine creative collective.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local metal scene like there?
We are based out of the city of Sydney in Australia. There are a small handful of strong bands from here, most of them we are acquainted with on a personal level. We however, tend toward a relatively low profile and as such are not really involved in any sort of ‘scene’. It is not entirely rare, though very scarce for us to emerge on the live front (more so these days than ever). It is this as well as what we engage in and write about that sets us apart from the Sydney metal scene as outsiders.
Is there any story or concept behind the title Temple Under Hell?
The album’s title emerged of course from the song bearing the same name. It is this song, musically and lyrically that epitomises and draws the entire album together as a shadowy concept. Temple Under Hell as a name represents the rite of passage and the state sought therein. A silent state of raw experience; bewildering as it is clear, bereft of the forms and attributions of the ages. We felt this title best expressed something which at its core escapes the order of conscious association.
Select two song from Temple Under Hell and what inspired the lyrics.
The song Trisagion was inspired by an intense dream featured in a post-apocalyptic and godless world. Without letting on too much, the sense extracted from the dream was of a thoroughly sinister force; nameless, faceless and beyond the dualisms of religion – weaved within the mechanisms of everything.
Sorathick Pentecost was inspired by a number of things from Rudolf Steiner’s theosophical theorems on the Antichrist, the Book of Revelations and a symbolic vision beheld of two goat horns emerging from the earth. One horn burned with a pure brilliant white fire, the other with a pitch black fire. Above and in between the two horns the flames danced toward each other forming a vortex of grey light; as deep and entrancing as it was austere. These many things from the literary to the visual were twisted into a unique “end of days” vision. Remembering of course that it is not the end that is spoken of, but new beginnings heralded forth through the purging of fire, death and destruction.
Who did the artwork for Temple Under Hell and how much input did you have on it?
The album’s artwork was executed by the masterful hands of Denis Forkas Kostromitin, a Russian esoteric artist reputed within both music and artistic circles for his strong visions and application. With the exception of initially discussing the album’s ideas and lyrics our input remained entirely minimal as he channelled his own muse. This emerged in tandem with our own feelings about the album and we are entirely pleased to have worked with such a genuine and inspired person.
What could one expect from a live Erebus Enthroned show?
As having never witnessed our shows, remaining within the ritual platform engaged in my own experiences I can’t speak for audience members. I could however put forward that our shows are ecstatic rites of raw energy, for the most part undirected and left to flow freely, put into the context of a Black Metal performance with slight tendencies toward the ritualistic. It is through this style of music that we feel we can partake in communion of fire and force. Whether a participant in our rites simply watches the show or takes something further away is up to them. None the less, every time we set foot upon a stage a certain dark otherness is undeniably awoken.
Has Erebus Enthroned ever played here in the States or plan to do so in future days?
So far we have never played upon American soil. There are no plans to do so yet but as always, time will tell. I would be very interested to see how the maledictum of Erebus Enthroned would be taken in the land of the “free”.
If Erebus Enthroned could open up for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
A thought that we haven’t contemplated too much or too deeply, if at all. I however would have loved to have played with Dissection either back in the day or in the final years ensuing Jon’s incarceration. Why? Because I have always held them to be a genuine Satanic band with a streamlined vision and masterful execution, present until the very end.
Are you or any of the other members involved with any other bands outside of Erebus Enthroned?
Members of Erebus Enthroned are involved in bands outside of this one. Besides one currently known these endeavours are either undertaken anonymously or are yet to publically surface. Either way, in the context of this interview their mentioning is irrelevant.
What is your favourite Australian beer of choice and why?
Whilst human, we enjoy a drop from time to time. That question however, is better suited to the aforementioned metal ‘scene’.
When you look back on your first full length Night’s Black Angel, what do you think of it now?
We still hold our debut in high esteem. Looking back on Night’s Black Angel, it serves as a great reminder of the effort and energy we put into it as our first album and how far we have come since then as musicians and writers. It also serves as a powerful reminder that no one and nothing stays the same. Everything and everyone changes and as such there are no constants besides that simple truth. A truth that is expanded upon beneath the surface of Temple Under Hell.
What’s up next for Erebus Enthroned?
Our plans for the immediate future are to inaugurate Temple Under Hell in Sydney with a release show on the 3rd of May. Following this we shall be travelling to Germany in July for our first international appearance at Under the Black Sun Festival. Upon returning home our fate is unsealed.
