Fenrir and The Legends Of The Grail

Fenrir and The Legends Of The Grail

Fenrir presents their own adventurous folk metal tapestries that will enrapture the senses and set the imagination in flight.  Legends Of The Grail is the name of their latest thrilling magnum opus, jammed packed with thrilling musicianship and auditory intrigue.  Highwire Daze Online recently caught up with vocalist Elsa Thouvenot to find out a whole lot more about the captivating Fenrir and the devastating Legends Of The Grail.  Read on…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Fenrir, and how long the band has been together.
Hi ! I’m Elsa, singer in the band and second violinist. The band was founded in 2006 but members have changed a lot since that (we have no less than 6 former guitar players !)

Where is Fenrir based out and what is your music scene like there?
Fenrir is based in Lorraine, a region in the North-East of France (near Germany and Belgium). There we have very diverse musical bands, but very few folk metal bands.

Is there any overall story or concept behind the CD title Legends Of The Grail?
The whole album is about the legends of the knights of the round table, and especially about the story of king Arthur, with songs about his birth, wedding, battles and finally his death.

Select two songs from Legends Of The Grail and what inspired the lyrics.
In “La Dame du Lac“, the lyrics are quoted from a manuscript from the 13th century. They tell the story of the young Lancelot coming with the lady of the lake to be entrusted to Arthur.

The Fisher King” is directly linked with the cover art : it tells the meeting of Perceval and the Fisher King who is the secret guardian of the Grail. Perceval sees the holy Grail but does not dare to say anything, so he loses the chance to take it.

Who did the cover art for Legends Of The Grail and how much input did you have on it?
The cover artwork was realized by Edouard Noisette, a great artist and friend of mine. We only asked him to portray the boat of the Fisher King in the legend of Perceval, with the castle in the background of the lake. It was such a beautiful work we did not have much to change on it !

Overall how do you think Legends Of The Grail compares to the full length debut Echoes Of The Wolf?
It is more consistent, with one concept only for all the songs, and on the musical side, everything was written in a shorter interval. It is also heavier, more contrasting between acoustic and metal parts.

What could one expect from a live Fenrir show?
In our shows we want to take the audience on a journey in time and space, with outfits inspired by the Middle Ages. There is also much energy on (and in front of) the stage, because many songs are an opportunity for jumping all together.

If Fenrir could open for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
I guess it would be Eluveitie, because even if our styles are not quite the same, we also take our inspiration in the traditional Celtic tunes from Brittany and Ireland.

Has Fenrir ever played here in the States or plan to do so in future days?
We have not played in the States yet, but would be delighted to be able to, if we can manage to do it.

What is your favorite beer of choice and why?
Ah, good question! I enjoy different kind of beers, but for example I like Belgian fruit Lambic beers.

What’s up next for Fenrir?
We are now preparing a tour to make fans discover the new album.

Any final words of wisdom?
