Fourth Quarter Comeback: Power Pop Grand Slam

Fourth Quarter Comeback is a charismatic power pop band from Virginia whose super infectious songs are guaranteed to win them extra innings with music fans all across the country.   They recently concluded a tour with School Boy Humor and Rookie Of The Year and are preparing to record a follow up to their well received Finders Keepers EP.  If their super intensive live shows don’t win you over, their wonderfully humorous When I Fall video is sure make a grand slam right out of your rock and roll ballpark.  Here is an interview we conducted with the Fourth Quarter Comeback collective to find out more about this band on the rise…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Fourth Quarter Comeback, and how long the band has been together.
Hello! Thanks so much for the interview! We’re Fourth Quarter Comeback, an alternative/pop/rock band from Fairfax, Virginia.  Andy sings and plays rhythm guitar, Casey plays lead guitar and does backing vocals, Ben plays Bass, and Matt is on the drums. We’ve all been together since the end of 2010, and our debut EP ‘Finders Keepers‘ came out on July 27th of last year.

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there?
We’re from different parts of Northern Virginia, but mainly around the city of Fairfax , VA. We’re lucky enough to have a great music scene in our area, being so close to both Maryland and Washington D.C. There are several great venues close by, and all the local bands, while obviously competitive, share a lot of the same attitudes and goals. It’s a great place for musicians and fans alike to get together in the spirit of music appreciation.

How has the tour with School Boy Humor and Rookie Of The Year been going so far and what have been some of the highlights?
We just recently hoped on for the last leg of the tour, but so far it’s been really great! It’s an incredible experience to be able to leave our suburban home and go out and play shows for audiences in different states. I think the highlight for us so far was simply the drive up to Pennsylvania for our first show of the tour. It’s not often that a band from our area is able to do something like this, so we’re all excited and thankful for the experience.

What could one expect from a live Fourth Quarter Comeback show?
A lot of sarcasm and inside jokes, haha! No, but we always have a great time playing our set and we like to talk to the crowd and get them involved as much as possible. We think showmanship is somewhat of a lost art in our scene, and we try to make that a big part of our show.

Select any two songs from Finders Keepers and what inspired the lyrics.
New York , New York : This song is about a girl that Ben knew in the city. Finding himself alone in New York was a new experience, so we took those feelings and brought it to light. Having someone in a different city, and finding love in such a huge place. We took moments and captured Ben’s experience in the city and wrote a song around it.

You and I: Here is a song that many kids can relate to, long distance relationships. We wrote this song with an idea of a guy and a girl, who are deeply in love that live a state away. Being in a long distance relationship is never easy, but it can work if all parties really want it to. Nothing can stop love, which is what this song is about.

How close are you to recording a new EP or even a full length?
We’re actually going to be going back into the studio very soon after returning from our tour to record our second EP, most likely sometime in May.

The When I Fall video looked like a lot fun to create. How long did it take to film and who directed it and who came up with the idea?
It was definitely a lot of fun. The shooting itself took about 10 hours. It was directed by our good friend Steven Hascher, who at the time was a video production student at nearby George Mason University . He has since graduated and is spending all of this year traveling the country with project ‘Bus 52’. The idea for the video was a collaboration between all of us all as a group. While its admittedly a bit cliché, we thought it was a good fit for the feel of the song.

Did you know all of the girls who were cast in the When I Fall video?
Yes we did haha, well almost all of them. It’s actually a pretty funny story. The two girls in Casey’s (red head) scene we’re his current girlfriend and his ex-girlfriend. It seems like an awkward situation on the surface, but everybody got along really well.

Has Fourth Quarter Comeback ever played Warped Tour and if so, what was the experience like?
We haven’t yet had the opportunity to play Warped Tour, but we definitely hope to in the future. As I’m sure is true for most bands, it would be a dream come true to be able to play even one leg of Warped.

Any strange or interesting stories from the road?
The best story from the road so far include, a hotel, drinks, and a broken exit sign. We can leave the rest up to the imagination.

If you could be a donut, what kind would you be and why?
We would be a sprinkle donut, because even though we are bad for you, everyone eyes the sprinkle donut first. No one really wants to eat the gross bread flavored donut, they just want to have fun and eat what they know. Kinda like us. We eat what we know.

What’s up next for Fourth Quarter Comeback after the School Boy Humor tour is over?
We’re going to be spending most of our time writing for the next EP. We have an amazing producer that we’re going to be working with, and we think we’ll really turn some heads with the next record. Aside from that, we hope to get on another tour later in the year

Any final words of wisdom?
Do stuff on things. And never give up the dream.
