GUNS N’ ROSES – Not In This Lifetime Tour, Dodger’s Stadium, August 18, 2016
Guns N’ Roses unleashed an epic show at the iconic Dodgers Stadium – their first of a two-night stand – and pardon the baseball pun – but this legendary rock and roll band slammed it out of the ball park and into the stratosphere where concert memories last forever and a day. On the road with the Not In This Lifetime Tour, Guns N’ Roses brought back the glory days of Sunset Strip rock with an all-out vengeance – clearly demonstrating within their over two hour concert extravaganza why they are indeed one of the greatest bands in the universe.
After an dynamic opening set from The Cult, Guns N’ Roses would take the stage, pyrotechnics and all, to the glorious Appetite For Destruction one-two punch of It’s So Easy and Mr. Brownstone. And then up next was the appearance in the set of Chinese Democracy, followed by an absolutely devastating performance of the classic Welcome To The Jungle anthem.
There were enraptured fans as far as the eye could see, enveloping both the field and the seat at Dodgers Stadium, all witnessing something truly tremendous. And the band played on, presenting classic Gn’R cuts such as Rocket Queen, You Could Be Mine, and Civil War. The grand and spacious Coma was a definitive highlight, showcasing the entire Gn’R membership at their most imaginative and compelling! Amongst the cover song unveiled was their thrilling version of Live And Let Die by Paul McCartney and Wings as well as their spirited take on the Bob Dylan mainstay Knockin’ On Heaven’ Door.
Axl Rose is the classic rock and roll front man, running all over the massive Dodger’s Stadium stage, singing with a passion and conviction that was absolutely thrilling to witness. Slash remains one of the finest guitar virtuosos ever, delivering his own trademark brand of sonic artistry that has always made the Gn’R songs hit a raging home run! Rhythm guitarist Richard Fortus enveloped the stadium with his own atmospheric collage of sound. Especially amazing was when Slash and Fortus joined forces for a cosmic rendering of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here.
Duff McKagan supplied a thunderous low end on bass that rang relentlessly throughout the entire stadium. Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese both performed magic and intrigue on dueling keyboards. And then slamming it all home with an almighty vengeance was Frank Ferrer on drums. (For those trivia buffs in the know, both Richard Fortus and Frank Ferrer spent nearly a decade in the alternative rock bands The Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love.) The Guns N’ Roses 2016 lineup was on fire, demonstrating a showmanship that was nothing short of astounding.
There were so many memorable moments to be experienced at the Gn’R Dodger’s Stadium show – from Slash’s much revered guitar intro in Sweet Child Of’Mine followed by Axel’s staggering vocals. Then there was Axl playing grand piano on the sweeping November Rain. Or an entire audience hoping aboard a high flying rendition of Night Train, which closed out the set in such a triumphant way! And for a much deserved encore, the Gn’R membership returned to the stage, treating the wildly appreciative audience to four more anthems of rebellion and intrigue.
Closing out the entire Not In This Lifetime concert experience would be a dazzling rendition of Paradise City, complete with fireworks and confetti that would thoroughly illuminate the night sky. Not In This Lifetime is the tour of the century – one that is sure to be remembered and cherished by all who were in attendance on this brilliant night under the stars of Southern California.
