Hunters Moon is a black metal band based out of Australia who perform music in the grand tradition of the true great ones such as Bathory and Darkthrone. The Serpents Lust is their latest offering and it’s sure to gain the band a good deal of notoriety all across this dismal planet. Here is a recent interview we conducted with one half of this devilish duo…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Hunters Moon, and how long the project has been together?
Eradicator: I am responsible for all song writing, guitar, bass and organs. I write and record the music for all of these parts. Decaylust is responsible for the lyrical writing and delivery. Hunters Moon has been in existence since around 2006. Ideas for the band existed quite sometime before this.
Where is the band from and what is your local metal scene like there?
We’re from Australia. The local metal scene here has dwindled over the years. Most of the great bands from Australia are no longer active. I am not particularly interested in the metal scene here. There are however still some quality bands like Denouncement Pyre, Nocturnal Graves, Stargazer, Cauldron Black Ram, etc. that are continue to keep the flame alive with strong releases. The live scene for extreme metal here is dead.
Is there any story or concept behind the CD title The Serpents Lust?
The themes and concepts of the lyrics on The Serpent’s Lust are quite varied. The Serpents Lust is a unifying title to bring the release together. The Serpents Lust is of course the lust of Leviathan; I will leave it up to you to conjure your own perverted of thoughts of The Serpents Lust.
What inspired you to write some of the lyrics on The Serpents Lust?
I did not contribute any of the lyrics on The Serpents Lust. You would have to delve into Decaylust’s psyche to get an answer on that. There was a conscious effort to steer away from the typical sort black metal lyrics. The themes in our lyrics are quite diverse but all together dark and macabre.
What do you find in Hunters Moon that you did not find in your previous bands Nocturnal Graves and Denouncement Pyre?
Hunters Moon is just another outlet for my ideas that did not fit in the aforementioned bands. All bands are unified by the same darkness but differ in their execution. Hunters Moon tends to focus on the epic side of black metal; Nocturnal Graves music is a fury of death/thrash and DP is black death chaos!
What is a live Hunters Moon show like for those who have yet to see you play?
There have never been any live shows for Hunters Moon. There never will be.
Who did the cover art for The Serpents Lust and how much input did you have on the artwork?
Andrei Zikov. He has done work for other bands such as Nocturnal Graves and other bands signed to NWN. The entire cover art is a figment of my warped imagination. I explained to A.Z in great detail what I was looking for and he captured every detail in the finished product.
What is the very first Black Metal CD you ever bought and how did you hear about it?
I can’t remember. It might have been Emperor’s – In the Night Side Eclipse. At the time I relied on older friends to get me into black metal and metal in general.
When can we expect a full length CD from Hunters Moon?
Since Denouncement Pyre is still a band, would DP and Hunters Moon ever want to do a show or tour together?
That would probably be impossible since both bands do not have a complete lineup, and I have no interest in playing live. I feel more productive getting releases out there rather than focusing my energy on live shows.
How close is Tasmania to you and have you ever played there or met the reclusive Striborg?
Tasmania is a couple of hours away via ferry. I have no interest in going there or meeting Striborg. I think Striborg is complete rubbish to be frank.
Being from Australia, how did you wind up being signed to Hells Headbangers out of Ohio?
Chase and I have been in contact for a while. We met in the flesh when he came to Australia for a holiday and we ended up agreeing on a Hunters Moon release on HHR. HHR have proven to be a very professional label and we look forward to working with them on the full length.
What was your favorite CD of 2009 and why?
Maybe Beherit – Engram or D666 – Defiance.
