IN THE NIGHT by DREAM EVIL (Century Media Records)
For fans of the power metal genre, The Book Of Heavy Metal and United remain essential classics. Founded by producer Fredrik Nordström back at the turn of the century, Dream Evil has been consistent with their goal of releasing the finest metal on the planet – and fifth album In The Night continues on with that grand and glorious tradition. The year is young, but this one is easily a contender for many a top 10 list when 2010 comes slamming to an end.
The disc kicks off with the mighty sounds of Immortal, containing a wildly infectious chorus that is instantly memorable. Bang Your Head is another anthem destined to become a staple in their live shows for the many metal years to come. Electric is a thrashing good time, a lightning swift track that is guaranteed to bring on a serious case of whiplash. The Ballad perfectly describes this little ditty, sweeping and supremely dramatic in scope, showing an impressively diverse side of the Dream Evil collective. And then there’s the remarkable title track, featuring terrific vocal work from Niklas Isfeldt as well as some outstanding guitar solos from Daniel Varghamne.
It’s been nearly four years since we’ve heard new material from these Swedish metalheads, and In The Night was certainly well worth the wait! With sublime lyrics and an over-the-top musical presentation, Dream Evil brings true power metal into the new decade with an all-out vengeance. The last time we were to witness a live Dream Evil performance here in Los Angeles was in December of 2006, so here’s hoping for a mighty return to the States sometime this year. In the meanwhile, check out In The Night and the many other Dream Evil masterworks now available from Century Media Records!
