Raging Out of the Asylum with Just Like Gentlemen
Raging out of Jacksonville, Florida is melodic metalcore collective Just Like Gentlemen, ready to take on the nation as they commence upon The Demen Tour. Their latest magnum opus is entitled Asylum, an insanely cathartic effort that should exhilarate fans of bands such as Chelsea Grin and The Plot In You. Pablo Viveros of Chelsea Grin even makes a guest appearance on a track called Held In Contempt. Here is a recent interview we conducted Just Like Gentlemen’s guitarist Tyler Hansel to find out more about a band ready to break it out on in an epic way. Read on…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Just Like Gentlemen, and how long the band has been together.
My name is Tyler Hansel, and I play guitar and sing in the band. JLG has been together for a little over 3 years.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based out of Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville being a fairly big city, the scene here is pretty awesome! Some awesome local band from Jacksonville are I Am The Witness, and Personalities. Both super sick bands!
How did you wind up signing on We Are Triumphant?
Our manager was in a chat with another band on the label, and somehow our name was brought up, and then we began talking to the label that way.
Is there any story or concept behind the Asylum title?
Yes, there is in fact. It is somewhat conceptual in a sense and it has to do with real life experiences. Feeling trapped inside of your mind and getting caught up in your thoughts.
Select two songs from Asylum and what inspired the lyrics.
“Asylum” is the title track and “Whorecrux” was the second single we released from the album, and lyrically they are very personal songs to Caige. Incidences that have happened in his life play a big part in the whole album really.
How did Pablo Viveros of Chelsea Grin become involved with the song Held In Contempt and what was it like working with him?
Actually we played the Allstars Tour in Maryland, and Pablo caught our sound check and dug our stuff. We got to talking and he wanted to work with us on our next album. The experience working with him was awesome – he is a great dude and an even better musician. Held In Contempt just seemed like the right song to feature him on.
Who did the cover art for Asylum and how much input did you have on it?
Caige created the cover art, but we all expressed our feelings about the likes and dislikes until everyone was happy with it. So it’s safe to say we had total control of how we wanted it to look.
What could one expect from a live Just Like Gentlemen show in 2015?
110% all the time! We strive to be as consistent as possible, and play the best show we can for who ever might be watching.
What are you looking forward to the most on the upcoming Demen Tour?
Playing shows for awesome people every night definitely is something to look forward to. We are playing a bunch of places we haven’t played before, so we are looking forward to seeing / meeting new people!
Has Just Like Gentlemen ever played in the Los Angeles / OC area or plan to do so in future days?
We definitely plan to for sure. We have never been that far west, but as soon as we can we will!
If Just Like Gentlemen could open for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Personally, I think it would be so awesome to open for Ratt. They have always been one of my favorite bands.
What is it you’d like a listener to remember about Just Like Gentlemen after hearing your music for the first time?
I think it’s important for listeners to have a unique experience with music that they are listening to. When a listener hears our music for the first time, I hope they will be able to pick out unique aspects of our music that appeal to them.
Any final words of wisdom?
Make sure to never lose sight of the things that matter to you most.
