Lost Boy by Mychildren Mybride (Solid State Recordings)
Originally from the Alabama area, Mychildren Mybride deliver the true sounds of the Christian hardcore underground – displaying a swampy Southern sense of adventure that sends the material soaring. On Lost Boy, their second release on Solid State Recordings, the band fully delivers on the promise set forth with the mighty strains of Unbreakable. Lost Boy is a truly ferocious collection of impassioned musical assaults – complete with atmospheric guitars, driving blast beats, and unbelievably heavy breakdowns. And then there’s the charismatic front man Matthew Hasting, who delivers the stunning lyrical content with a compelling sense of urgency.
Lost Boy starts out with an ominous threat of an oncoming storm in the background before bursting into the fiery Terra Firma – a metallic masterwork that shows how Mychildren Mybride has grown as a band over the years. Hooligans is an anthem guaranteed to get your blood pumping with it’s chants of “we are the lions” and “what goes around come around” – phrases their fans are sure to be singing along with for the years to come. .
King Of The Hopeless is varied and complex, mixing stunning thrash bits with hardcore inflections – coming up with yet another winning track. Crimson Grim is mesmerizing in scope, and surely good for some spin kick action in venues all across the nation. And then there’s title cut Lost Boys, blasting at the listener in relentless, machine gun fashion.
There is brief respite midway through within the haunting melodies of instrumental cut Gatekeeper, but then the jam heats up again with the aggressively manic Digital Rebirth. Redeemer is another assault to the senses that should send listeners reeling.
Be sure to stick around for the end, when Lungs Full Of Water provides a stunning conclusion to Lost Boy, a 9-plus minute opus that manages to be brutal, haunting and highly poetic – all within the confines of the same track. A stunning coda to be sure.
The current membership of Mychildren Mybride consists of founding member Matthew Hasting on vocals, Robert Bloomfield and Daniel Alvarado on guitars, and Joe Lengson on bass. In addition, Matt Goldman was the perfect choice for producer, having worked with the likes of Underoath and The Chariot in the past. Together, Goldman and MCMB has created and unleashed what is destined to be a genre classic – the one surely to break Mychildren Mybride into the bigger arenas at long last.
