Losing Your Mind with Madysin Hatter
Meet Madysin Hatter, a super-talented rock and roller singer in the grand tradition of Pat Benatar and Ann Wilson. About to unleash her debut full-length entitled Lose Your Mind, Madysin Hatter is sure to garner a good deal of attention with her epic voice and wildly memorable songs. Here a recent chat we had with Ms. Hatter to discuss her upcoming album, inspiring lyrics, opening for Tom Keifer of Cinderella and a whole lot more…
What was the name of the very first song you ever wrote? How old were you at the time, and what was the song about?
I was four years old when I wrote my first song. My favourite thing in the world was “Jem” cartoon reruns. I used to pretend I was Jem, my friends were The Holograms, and we would perform little songs and dances I came up with out on the playground. (Honestly, not much has changed since then!) The first song I ever wrote was called “Hole In The Wall”, and it was literally about there being a hole in the wall “but no one will listen to me” (actual lyric from the song). I was very proud of it and would sing it for anyone who would listen—as Jem, of course.
Where are you based out of and what is your local music scene like there?
I currently live in a small, suburban town in northern New Jersey. With New York City practically in my backyard, It’s an amazing place to be! There is always something going on, whether it be in the city or locally.
What is the name of your current EP or album and what inspired the title?
I am releasing my new full length album on Friday January 8th, 2016. Yay! It’s called “Lose Your Mind”. I chose to name my album that for a couple reasons. The first single off the album is a song I wrote called “Lose My Mind”, so it made sense for the album title to follow suit. The “Lose Your Mind” sentiment also ties in with my whole “mad hatter” persona. And lastly (and probably most importantly), “Lose Your Mind” is a call to arms— an invitation to let loose, rock out, and have fun. I can promise you that once you let go and allow yourself to enjoy being who you are, and once you give yourself permission to experience life as the colorful adventure it should be, the entire world transforms into a much more exciting place, and you become a happier individual. Take a risk. Push yourself to accomplish something that scares you (without putting yourself or anyone else in danger). Dare to be different. Switch it up. Live your truth. Embrace the crazy…it’s there in each and every one of us.
Select two songs and what inspired the lyrics.
“This Last Time” is the last track on my new album, “Lose Your Mind“. It’s about being trapped in a struggle, and being sucked into a dark, vicious cycle…yet rationalizing with yourself that it’s okay because it’s the last time. A little over ten years ago, I struggled with addiction, and by a higher power I am able to be here today. It was a dark time for me, and I’ve never felt so helpless, alone or afraid in my entire life. But I survived. For anyone out there struggling with addiction, please know that you can beat it. You are not alone, and there is help for those who seek it.
On a much lighter note, one of my very favourite songs on my new album is called “Black Velvet Snakebite”. I got the idea for the song title from the computer at the bar I was working at. There was a button on the touch screen that had both “Black Velvet” and “Snakebite” listed, as they were both beer cocktails that were the same price. The word combination struck me as being just about the coolest thing ever, and I knew I needed to create a song using it. It was a lot of fun writing that one, and coming up with what a “Black Velvet Snakebite” actually is!
How close are you to recording and releasing a whole new collection of songs?
My new full length album, “Lose Your Mind”, is releasing worldwide on Friday January 8th, 2016. It will be available for download at all of the usual online retailers, including iTunes. For physical copies of the album (which I would recommend because it includes a cool CD booklet), people can order them from my website www.MadysinHatter.com or my merch store www.MadysinHatter.bigcartel.com. The album will also be available at select stores.
Q: What could one expect from a live Madysin Hatter show?
At a live Madysin Hatter show, you can expect to “Lose Your Mind”! When I perform, I forget myself and I don’t hold anything back. I love when everyone in the audience joins me in letting go and having fun. That’s what rock ’n’ roll is all about! Also, there is never a shortage of high energy, dance moves, and glitter.
What was the experience like opening for Tom Keifer and did you get to meet or hang out with him at all?
Opening for Tom Keifer and his band (not once, but twice!) was so special to me. I love both his Cinderella catalogue and his solo material. He and his music are a huge inspiration to me, and he is one of my favourite rock artists. I met Tom Keifer a few months ago, when he and his band played at B.B. Kings in New York City, and he was incredibly kind and down to earth. A true class act. While I didn’t hang out with him the day of the show, I did grab some post-show pizza and drinks with a couple of my friends who are in his band. It was an epic night!
Who are some of the other bands and artists you have opened for in the past?
Buckcherry, Faster Pussycat, Tom Keifer, Winger, Kix, Great White (with Jack Russell)…I’ve got a complete list up on my website, www.MadysinHatter.com. Also, last year I played the holiday bash for Vh1’s That Metal Show here in New Jersey. I’m a huge fan of the show, so it was awesome to hang with Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine. My band and I are playing it again this year too! It’s back at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ, which is one of my favourite places to play, besides Whisky A Go Go. Can’t wait.
If you could open for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Aerosmith. Aerosmith. Aerosmith. And, Aerosmith. Because that band is why I do what I do. In life. Always.
What’s up next for you?
I am releasing my new, full length album “Lose Your Mind” on Friday January 8th, 2016, and am so happy to finally share it with everyone! Just prior to that, I will be releasing a music video for the first single off the album, so keep your eyes peeled!
