Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Mercy Screams, and how long the band has been together.
My name is Jeremiah Hirsch and I’m the vocalist. Mercy Screams has been a band for 5 years. We started out as a non-christian garage band and after several member changes we found a line up that wanted to take things more seriously. During that time two of our members, me being one, were lead to the Lord at a show by a band called ”Blessed is He” after that we came back to the band and shared our message and since then we’ve been doing it for God. We want to give the same opportunity we got at that show that changed our lives to others.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We’re out of Fredericksburg VA and our scene here is awesome and very supportive. Yes our good friends in I am Barricadian, Before Him, Villiska, Depths of Mariana, Endeavor, This Mountain is Man and Arabella.
How did you wind up signing to Red Cord Records?
I heard about the label and checked out some of there bands me and the owner Joey started talking and things fell into place.
Is there any story or concept behind the CD title Broken Mirrors?
When your at your lowest point, completely lost with no direction and you look in the mirror seeing nothing out of frustration and guilt you destroy it .You have to break yourself from the endless cycle, separate yourself from the problem, burn bridges and dont look back. Find your true self and Gods purpose for you. The last Lyrics in the song go: ‘‘I won’t turn back now this is so much greater once was broken mirrors now I see my reflection.’ It’s never too late to change your life and better yourself. Nothing is too much for our God. He will make a way.
Select two songs from Broken Mirrors and what inspired the lyrics.
Repetitions: It took me a long time to understand and accept God’s love and forgiveness because as humans its one of the hardest things to do especially when it came to forgiving myself. So this song is the reinsurance of God’s love and forgiveness. Sin is endless and very repetitive and even when we walk away Hes always there not matter what with open arms.
Other Side of the River: I lost my grandfather in March and it was the hardest thing I’ve been through this far in life. He was a huge inspiration to me and the strongest spiritual man I’ve ever known. At his bed side up to his last breathe he praised the Lord. It’s my thanks to him letting him know his wisdom and love for other will be shown through me, my children and my children’s children.
What could one expect from a live Mercy Screams show?
Intense brutal truth and a live performance you won’t forget,
Has Mercy Screams played in the Los Angeles area or plan to do so in the future?
No we haven’t ventured out west yet. We hope to do so this coming summer
You have opened for a good number of bands. With A Day To Remember being so popular, what was it like opening for them and were they cool to hang out with?
That show was packed! It was a really good show. The guys in ADTR were really nice and humble.
Were there any other live shows opening for bands that were particularly memorable?
We played with As I Lay Dying a while back and hands down one of my personal favorite shows ever. Sold out show – got to hang out with them in the venue’s apartment – eat lunch and dinner with them – it was a dream come true! The crowd was insane – biggest circle pit ever lol
Who did the artwork for Broken Mirrors and how much input did you have in it?
The one and only Dave Quiggle and I had a lot of input. Ii just told him the meaning behind the song and he made it happen.
What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most after hearing your music for the very first time?
It comes from the heart and struggles that we’ve all dealt with. God’s love is endless – if you trust and believe in him, he will make away out of any situation.
Any final words of wisdom?
Never give up – that’s what the enemy wants, but were better then that and God has a purpose for each one of us.
