Methusalem: Timeless Metal from the Front

The music of Methusalem is timeless and inspiring and should thrill pure metal fans from all walks of life.   Based out of Holland, the band’s latest release is entitled Unite and Conquer – a journey through the old school metal front that is mesmerizing to behold!  Highwire Daze went to visit the front via new school technology (email) to find out more about this amazing Dutch collective…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Methusalem and how long the band has been together.
Hello metalheads! I’m Harold de Vries, lead vocalist for Methusalem since 2004. Our drummer Jort and bassist Wilco started the group @ 2000. They had a passion for good heavy metal. After a few years the band was complete with this current line-up who all feel the same in music.

Where is the band from and what is your local music scene like there?
We’re from the top of Holland (Friesland), metal is very populair over here so that’s a big plus!

Is there any story or concept behind the CD title Unite and Conquer?
Yes, we made a statement that lots of innocent people die from war. The album is also dedicated to all lost soldiers.

Who did the cover artwork and how much input did you have on it?
We made a sketch for an idea that we had for the cover and send it to Jan Yrlund from Dargrove Design. He is a great designer so we thought we need that man for an awesome cover. (He also designed our Myspace…)

Describe your music to an elderly relative who seems rather puzzled by it all…
It’s a mix between rock and metal.. Just think of bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden.

What is a live Methusalem show like for those of us who have yet to see you play.
Lots of energy, we will Rock till the bone!

What was it like touring with Blaze and was Blaze Bayley pretty cool to hang out with?
Speaking for the whole band it was an amazing experience! We learned a lot from the guys.. really cool persons to hang out with.. that’s for sure!

What other bands have you opened for in the past and what were those experiences like?
We also opened for Paul Di’Anno that was also a great time, I guess it was around 2002.

How did the release party on April 1st go and what were some of the highlights?
It went out very well, the crowd was crazy.. we were crazy, without a doubt it was something special!

Any chance of seeing Methusalem here in the States for some shows?
At the moment we have some upcomming shows through the Netherlands, but you’ll never know what will come on our way.. We would love to perform there so if there are people who will see us play live, we are available!

Are you or any of the other members involved with any other bands or projects outside of Methusalem?
I guess I’m the only one who has besides Methusalem more bands and projects, without music I wasn’t here!

What made you decide to use Methusalem as your band name?
Heavy metal is just as old like Methusalem! just kidding.. it was a great sounding name named after the oldest man ever lived.

What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most after hearing Unite and Conquer for the very first time?
The purity, the energy!

Any final words of wisdom?
Never give up your dreams, just go for it and never let it take away by anyone.. believe in yourself!
