Discovering My Genuine Find

My Genuine Find is the solo project of Bobby Mares from New Mexico – whose latest EP What We Imagined is a joyous collection of  melodic pop rock perfection.  Creating and releasing his own music in true DIY fashion, Mares has gained quite a following within the webpages of Myspace and beyond.  The future looks as bright and as optimistic as the songs Mares composes, and they are well worth checking into.  Here is an interview we recently conducted with the mastermind of My Genuine Find to make our own discovery upon this wondrous up-and-coming entity…

Introduce yourself, how old you are, and how long you’ve been doing My Genuine Find.
I’m Bobby Mares, 22, I’ve been doing MGF for about 2 years now.

Where you in any other bands prior to starting up My Genuine Find? If so, who and what kind of music were they?
Yeah, I’ve been in different bands since 8th grade, all pretty much punk/rock bands, ha.

Where are you based out of and what is the local music scene like there?
I’m from Las Cruces, NM. There is pretty much no music scene there, it’s very small and mostly hardcore.

Where did the band name My Genuine Find come from?
I wanted my band name to represent what I want to write about. My Genuine Find is a phrase I made representing the moment you meet your one and only. I wanted to include a lot of my writing about love.

Is there any story or concept behind the EP title What We Imagined?
What We Imagined in a phrase from the song Hello Universe on the EP. It’s meant to give the listener food for thought about their futures, we can do whatever and be wherever we want to be, all you need to do is imagine.

Where do you get the ideas for some of your lyrics? Please cite two of your songs and what the lyrics were inspired by.
All my lyrics are about situations or stories to teach something. In Girl and the Umbrella the bridge says “I was looking for time, I see it in the clouds, they teach me ways I dream of, and sometimes they seem to stop, we never do.” – meaning take time from your busy day-to-day life and slow things down, appreciate the small things.

In the song Know the Difference, it says “I know the difference, the ones who hold out their hands- and you take them, now take it back, no, you’re in too far too“- this was inspired by seeing how some people help others and give them a helping hand, and there are certain types of people who will just use nice people like that. They do it so much that it makes them into that type of person.

How long did it take to film the video for Better Now and who was the girl in the video?
The Better Now music video was filmed by Director Ryan Valdez and was shot in my hometown in 2 days. My friend Mary Warlick agreed to help us out and be the actress in the video and I’m super happy how it came out, its exactly how I wrote the song to look.

How soon until a full length My Genuine Find CD is out?
I’m definitely holding out on the full length. I plan on doing a lot of EP’s until, hopefully, MGF takes off. I want to do as much as possible as far as recording, music videos, and definitely try and create something new.

Have you had any label interest or would you prefer releasing your music on your own?
I’m definitely open-minded as far as labels, I’m always wanting to do whats best for my music and its listeners, and I plan on doing this for a long time, so either way, it’s going to work out.

What is a live My Genuine Find show like for those of us who have yet to see you play.
Well I perform solo. What’s cool is that it still sounds like there’s a full band! I have a light show and have my laptop and speakers, then play electric guitar and sing live, and it’s definitely something a little different from the traditional pop/rock band setup. We all always have a lot of fun

Any strange or unusual Myspace stories you could share?
Myspace is crazy! I love it, it definitely treats me well. I get to meet a lot of amazing people through myspace, and occasionally some creepy 60 year old man :p

If you could be a donut, what could would you be and why?
Jelly-filled definitely! I just love those kind, I think they’re definitely the best tasting and its always fun trying to keep it from getting all over the place, ha.

Any plans for a My Genuine Find tour?
Definitely, a few ideas in the works right now. For the next tours I’m definitely trying to take it to the next level as far as who I’m touring with. I definitely want to be on the road with bands that I love and believe in, it’s going to be good!

Do you have any messages for My Genuine Find fans and/or for those who are reading about you here for the very first time?
Thanks for giving me a chance, I know there are plenty of ”myspace bands” and I just hope you can take the time to check out my material and find something in it. I try to keep everything positive and encouraging without getting too sappy, ha, but it’s definitely made for a happy day.
