MY GENUINE FIND, Chain Reaction, November 9, 2010
If bands such as The Starting Line and The Rocket Summer are amongst those you count as favorites, then you probably should have been at Chain Reaction in Anaheim on this particular Tuesday night. My Genuine Find was making a rare local appearance, opening for the recently signed Plug In Stereo. And even though front man and sole member Bobby Mares hails from Las Cruces, New Mexico, there were a good deal of kids who ventured out into the wilds of the Orange Curtain just to check out what My Genuine Find has to offer.
Bobby Mares surprised a good deal of the audience by showing up sans a full on band. Performing with mostly prerecorded tracks and a guitar, the sound emitting from the stage filled up the Chain Reaction room and had many in the audience dancing and singing along. The fog and light show definitely added to the ambience, especially when Mares broke out into his dazzling signature track Hello Universe.
Bobby Mares possesses a good deal of charisma and has the classic melodic pop/punk singing voice. With bands such as The Ready Set and his fellow touring artist Plug In Stereo becoming signed and taking it on the road, there is little doubt that this is also going to happen to My Genuine Find. Even being unsigned, Mares has been able to play shows in and around the Southwest and has three releases out with a new one due in December.
One particular song that was a real crowd favorite was Oh Hush from the recently released Acoustic EP. Many in the crowd were even requesting it before Mares even played a single note. New songs were even previewed, including an acoustic selection entitled For Tonight from the forthcoming Love Enough EP. Tunes from his previous What We Imagined EP were also very well received, including the cathartic Better Now and the super jamming indie rocker I Believer.
Although My Genuine Find was first on a bill that included Plug In Stereo, Taylor Thrash, Setting Sunrise and The Right Coast, it won’t be long before Bobby Mares finds himself headlining his own shows. With or without a band in tow, the heartfelt songs of My Genuine Find are destined to find a highly appreciative audience. Remember the name My Genuine Find – they’re a musical discovery you’ll want to revisit time and again – onstage and within your Ipod.
Watch for an all-new interview with Bobby Mares – soon appearing here at Highwire Daze Online…
