Delve Texas presents NAMMJAM 2016 with John 5 & The Creatures, Beasto Blanco, L.A. Guns, City National Grove of Anaheim, January 22, 2016
An eventful Friday at The Namm Show had spun to an end, and now it was time to party it up within the wilds of the OC. Presented annually by Delve Texas, a live action and experiential marketing, creative content and product development company owned/operated by Suzanne Penley, David Vincent and Curse Mackey, NAMMJAM is always the hottest ticket in town. And this year would be no exception, with NAMMJAM presenting such vast and varied talent as John 5 & The Creatures, Beasto Blanco, and the mighty L.A. Guns. NAMMJAM also featured a silent auction with a wide array of items such as music memorabilia, VIP experiences, unique collectibles, original art pieces and more, all donated by sponsors and music industry notables. The proceeds would benefit the House of Blues Music Forward Foundation. All this and a groovy fashion show from Coffin Case, who is now celebration their 20th year of innovative artistry.
An opening set by Danny B. Harvey of The Head Cat really set the night in motion. The Head Cat was a band Harvey participated in with Lemmy of Motorhead, and Harvey would perform Crossroads as a tribute to the legendary front man. David Vincent, formerly of Morbid Angel (and co-founder of Delve Texas), even took the stage with Harvey, unveiling some really nifty country tunes. Such a powerhouse commencement for what would turn out to be a wondrously memorable night.
Performing early on in the evening was L.A. Guns, unleashing an artillery of tunes that nearly blew the roof off the cavernous Grove of Anaheim. Opening with the dazzling refrains of Show No Mercy from their Self-Titled album, L.A. Guns was clearly on fire, and sent the room spinning with a loud and rambunctious set of their classic tunes. Although the band has been in existence since 1983, the modern day lineup of L.A. Guns is nothing short of phenomenal.
Founding member Phil Lewis is a dynamic front man that brings the lyrics to ultra-vivid life, performing with a passion that is stunning to witness. Original drummer Steve Riley can still unleash the tasty beats like no other, and does so with a ferocious sense of conviction. Bassist Kenny Kweens supplies a pulsating low end that sounded thunderous in such a big venue. And then there’s the massively talented lead guitarist Michael Grant, whose charisma, showmanship and axe work is absolutely tremendous! Songs such as Let Me Be Your Man, Gypsy Soul and The Ballad Of Jayne are definitive crowd favorites, and still sound mesmerizing in a live setting after all of these years. Here’s hoping the current L.A. Guns lineup goes into the studio to record new material soon! Even after all of the time, L.A. Guns remains a compelling force in the SoCal music scene!
If the energetic set of L.A. Guns didn’t drop-kick your ass all over the Grove of Anaheim, Beasto Blanco’s live performance was sure to launch you into the stratosphere. Combining a staggering sense of theatrics with a ferocious rock and roll soundtrack, Beasto Blanco clearly captivated the audience with their exhilarating presentation. Fronted by the magnetic dual performances of Chuck Garric and Calico Cooper, the Beasto Blanco experience was a rock and roll extravaganza that enraptured the senses.
All this, and the band had a very special guest – Calico’s father Alice Cooper took to the stage and performed Feed My Frankenstein with Beasto Blanco. If the audience wasn’t already thrilled by the show Beasto Blanco was spewing forth, the appearance of the legendary Alice Cooper certainly had everyone absolutely transfixed! What a treat it was to see father and daughter in the same space rocking it out! “I don’t know where she gets it from,” Alice said humorously as he left the stage after what would be remembered as the massive highlight of NAMMJAM 2016!
John 5 & The Creatures
John 5 & The Creatures was the perfect headliner for NAMMJAM 2016 – and what a vibrant show this power trio unleashed upon the Grove Of Anaheim. Best known for his work with Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson and David Lee Roth, John 5 is one of the most unique and inspiring rock guitarists on the scene today. His own solo output consists of seven top notch solo albums – and in a live setting, John 5 delivers the goods in a grand and triumphant way!
Featuring a wide array of guitars including one that illuminated ominously, John 5 clearly intrigued the room with his wildly imaginative axe work. A banjo was even given the John 5 treatment, although the guitarist was quick to admit that this was NOT the instrument to play if you wanted to attract the girls.
John 5’s special guest of the night was Josh Todd of Buckcherry. Together they performed Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name Of as well as a rousing rendition of the infamous Buckcherry song Crazy Bitch. An absolutely insane night of music brought to you by the folks at Delve Texas! It will be exciting to see what treats are in store for the world at large when NAMMJAM 2017 arrives! Congrats to the staff at Delve Texas on a wonderfully successful night!
