Meet The Collected, Seize The Sun, and At Our Expense on the No Home Like The Road Tour

Every summer, bands from all across the country go on tour – whether they have a record deal or not.  In the age of Facebook and other Internet anomalies, being signed is not a necessity in order to gather up your band mates, hop in a van, and spread the word about your music all over the nation.

The Collected, Seize The Sun, and At Our Expense will be going on the No Home Like The Road Tour from July 2oth through August 17th, starting and ending at venues in Southern California.  Always looking to support local bands when we can, Highwire Daze sent out inquiries to the three bands to find out more about their songs, road stories, and what they are looking forward to the most from the tour.

Be sure to support these hard working entities if the tour winds up in your town.  Check out the dates below.  In the meantime, here are the answers from all three of the bands hitting the road…

THE COLLECTED

Introduce yourself and your band, and tell me what you do, and how long you’ve been together?
Hello! My name is Rane Matthew, and I do the screaming for the band! Jon Gross is our clean vocalist, and Micket Woodle is our guitarist. At this time, we’re missing three members, but have some great musicians and friends filling in for this upcoming tour. Upon our return, the search for new members will begin!

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like?
The Collected is based out of the suburbs of Los Angeles, more specifically, Tarzana and Woodland Hills. The local music scene down here, like any other, has its phases. For the most part, though, it has some strong support and a lot of kids that come out. There are some great promoters and talent buyers that bring awesome events to this area, so we have a lot of fun!

What do you look forward to the most about the upcoming No Home Like The Road Tour?
I’d have to say the things we’re looking forward to the most about this tour are playing in cities we’ve never played in, meeting new fans all along the way, and having the privilege and opportunity to do all of this with some of our best friends.

What could one expect from your live show?
Expect a crazy, energetic show. We try to be off of the walls and all over the place having a ton of fun playing. I think we’ve all been to shows where some of the bands that we really liked didn’t push it or move too much live, and it made it hard to have fun as fans because it didn’t seem like the band was having fun. We don’t ever want that to happen. We want the audience, both familiar and new faces alike, to just get crazy. To go home after the show and tell their friends about how much fun they had.

Do you have any unusual or horror stories from touring or from any particular show that you could share?
Oh man, there were a ton on the last tour. We destroyed a few hotel rooms in Portland by eating way too much Taco Bell. We had 190% proof Everclear for 5 days in Las Vegas while walking around the strip and in clubs talking in various accents. One time after a show got cancelled in Idaho, we got taken in by some people that lived in a trailer park and woke up with a bunch of one eyed and 3 legged cats wandering around. I have to say though, they did make awesome chimichangas for us. On our homecoming date for that tour, which happened to be Halloween, there were giant pits of people dressed in giant teletubby and wiggles costumes. In all honesty, touring in general is just one giant unusual but awesome story.

What is the name of your current/upcoming album or EP and is there any story behind the title?
Our first and current EP that’s out is called “Faith.” A lot of kids see the title, and ask us if its religiously based. The answer is no. While some members of the band do have religious affiliations, we try to keep it out of the music and lyrics so that way kids all of all beliefs, backgrounds, and cultures can relate and enjoy. The title of the EP simply came from an idea that we as a band share: that in anything you do, have faith not just in it, but yourself. You can do anything in the world as long as you work hard and believe in yourself.

Select two songs you will probably play on this tour and what inspired the lyrics?
Two songs that we’ll most definitely be playing on this tour are “Speak Easy,” and our new single, “This Is Being Human.” Speak Easy’s lyrics are about being strong when everything seems the be falling down around you. Everyone has their demons and their problems, and I know that at one point or another we all feel overwhelmed by them. This song is about facing them, and letting go. Finding your hope, and holding onto it. This Is Being Human’s lyrics are about questioning your faith, whatever it may be. There have been many times where things seem so clear, and the next day it’s quite the opposite. It’s a struggle that I think many people can relate to, and the lyrics to the song are how we would illustrate them with words.

What band or artist would someone be very surprised to find out that you listen to while out on the road?
We three members all have very, very different tastes of music. Ranging from acoustic, to hardcore, to almost everything in between. We do blast “I Believe I Can Fly” and sing to passing vehicles quite often, but I think the two weirdest things I’ve ever heard while being on the road were songs called “That Baby Don’t Look Like Me” by Shawty Putt, and “I Want To Get You Pregnant” by R. Kelly. I was very, very confused and happy when they came on.

Do you have any messages for fans out here in the Southern California area?
Please keep supporting us and coming out to our hometown shows! Every single one of you has been amazing so far, and it gives us the drive to keep putting our blood, sweat, and tears into this band. When we get back from tour, we’ll begin writing the full length album. We do it all for you guys, and hope you’re enjoying it!

SEIZE THE SUN

Introduce yourself and your band, and tell me what you do, and how long you’ve been together?
Hi my name is Lucas and I sing and play bass for Seize The Sun. STS has been established for 4 years but things didn’t start getting serious till about 2 years ago.

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like?
We are from Tacoma Washington and the scene out hear is sick. There are some genuine bands here in the Tacoma/Seattle area.

What do you look forward to the most about the upcoming No Home Like The Road Tour?
Traveling and playing music with my best friends. It’s what we’ve always looked forward too and we are so excited to finally get at it.

What could one expect from your live show?
Honestly, I’m super confident in our live performances. Our live shows are extremely energetic and powerful. For a lack of a better phrase. We go hard. haha

Do you have any unusual or horror stories from touring or from any particular show that you could share?
Nothing that I can think of off the top of my head but hopefully on this tour we encounter some crazy s***.

What is the name of your current/upcoming album or EP and is there any story behind the title?
The EP we have out now is called “Burning Bridges“. It’s mainly about all the ties we have severed to progress and to keep the band going. Our upcoming EP. Is going to be WAYYY different. And a lot heavier. Overall its gonna be better. haha

Select two songs you will probably play on this tour and what inspired the lyrics?
Blind Ambition and Propaganda are two new songs we are going to release before we leave for tour. They are My favorite songs as of right now. Propaganda is self explanatory once you read the lyrics. Blind Ambition pretty much is a song about the turning over a new leaf and looking back on how much we’ve grown and our still growing as a band.

What band or artist would someone be very surprised to find out that you listen to while out on the road?
I’ll be jamming to my dudes in Big Time Rush. Paralyzed all day.

Do you have any messages for fans out here in the Southern California area?
Yes I do. I look forward to meeting every single one of you guys coming out to the show. Please spread the word about Seize The Sun. And thank you Highwire Daze for interviewing us and covering the tour!

AT OUR EXPENSE

Introduce yourself and your band, and tell me what you do, and how long you’ve been together?
At Our Expense consists of Angel Carmona(vox) Andy Argueta (vox), Danny Lopez (Guitar/vox), Danny Santamaria (Guitar) and Michael Duffy (Drums). Unfortunately right now we are missing a permanent bass player, but our good friend Nelson Cornejo is filling in for the tour. With is current line up we have been together for about a year and a half. But the band as a whole has been together for about 5 and a half years.

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like?
We are based out of the San Fernando Valley in Southern CA. At the moment I don’t think we would say that there is much of a music scene here yet. Although we have noticed a bit of a rise in the number of local bands recently.

What do you look forward to the most about the upcoming No Home Like The Road Tour?
Everything. For us, this is our first time going so far away from home for such a long time. So we are looking forward to all the new experiences that this tour has in store for us, as well as getting to know the other bands hitting the road with us. Should be fun.

What could one expect from your live show?
You can expect to see a driven and passionate band that believes in the music that they are playing.

Do you have any unusual or horror stories from touring or from any particular show that you could share?
We have a few those actually, but the one that stands our the most is probably when we played a show up in Palo Alto, CA at Standford University. Long story short, the band that invited us to play with them up there told us they would back line the guitar cabs. The only problem was that they forgot that we had two guitar players. So they only had one cab. It was probably the worst sounding show ever and we played to the kitchen staff and the sound guy, after we had driven out the only other person in the place.

What is the name of your current/upcoming album or EP and is there any story behind the title?
Our new EP is titled “Without Maps“. The name simply comes from where we were as a band at the time of writing it. We were and still are a band that is trying to “make it” by our own means. It has all been very much a trial and error process for us since we started. We see ourselves trying to navigate this business on our own and we have learned that not everyone you meet has your best interests in mind.

Select two songs you will probably play on this tour and what inspired the lyrics?
Two songs that you will for sure hear on this tour are “The Third (III)” and “Arsonists On Board.”  The inspiration for the lyrics on both songs simply come from personal life experiences.

What band or artist would someone be very surprised to find out that you listen to while out on the road?
I think that everyone would be surprised to find out that we all listen to a variety or stuff that has nothing to do with the screamo or post hardcore scene. We listen to stuff like The Cure, The Gaslight Anthem, Incubus, 2pac, and Mumford and Son, just to name a few.

Do you have any messages for fans out here in the Southern California area?
Yes actually. We just want to thank each and everyone of you guys who have listened to us, bought merch from us, seen us live, or even just said hi or given us a like on facebook. We definitely work hard at our craft and we hope that all you guys out there come out and support us on this tour. And if you cant make it then we hope that you can help contribute in someway even if thats just by listening to a song or mentioning us to a friend. This thing is definitely growing into something and we want to get as many people on board as possible.
