Through The Extreme Passages of Nihilo

nihilopic1From the Swiss metal underground arrives the death metal entity known as Nihilo.  Their latest magnum opus is entitled Dum Spiro Spero – a blistering collection of songs destined to penetrate the senses of all whom encounter their exhilarating reveries.  Cuts such as Death Swamp, Last Man Standing, and On The Brink are absolute highlights to be found within the Dum Spiro Spero auditory odyssey. Here us a recent interview we conducted with drummer Damiano Fedeli to find out more about the vast mysteries and intrigue of their dynamic new album.  Read on as our amazing journey through the extreme passages of Nihilo shall now commence…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Nihilo, and how long the band has been in existence?
Hi, I’m Damiano Fedeli, drummer of the band Nihilo since summer 2009, which is 5 years of the total 11 years of existence of the band.

Where is your band based out of and what is your local music scene like there?
We are a death metal band from Switzerland, from a place called Longvalley (and some cities a few kilometres from there). The swiss (death) metal scene is currently coming back to life again and getting stronger. Just look at some of the recent releases from bands like Triptykon, Bölzer, Deathcult, Defaced, Cremation, Disparaged, Requiem and many more!

Is there any story or concept behind the CD title Dum Spiro Spero?
Well, yes, the main concept is about a little bit of hope which remains in all this chaos and the situation around the world. The album starts with chaos, going into more chaos reaching a point of understanding of the situation, point zero just to create something, a rebirth. As long as we live/breath, there’s some hope that a lot of fucked up shit will become better! The message is more positive. But you got to check the lyrics and the songs to be sure it is ;-)…..

Select two songs from Dum Spiro Spero and what inspired the lyrics.
Hard one. Ok. Let’s take “Infected” and “Dum Spiro Spero“. As explained on the previous question, “Dum Spiro Spero” is about a rebirth, a new beginning. After total annihilation of mankind, there’s hope to restart everything new.
Infected is about a zombiesque society. Everyone follows blindly what others are saying. No matter if politics, religions or other stuff. We are all infected! Time to open the eyes!!

nihilocd1Who did the unique artwork for Dum Spiro Spero and how much input did you have on it?
The amazing artwork was done by Paolo “Madman” Girardi who did the latest works of Diocletian, Inquisition and many others.
He captured the concept of the title perfectly. You have this giant tree, who lost almost all his leaves, everything around is almost destroyed, stench of death everywhere, but on the crown of the tree you will find some remaining leaves, the last hope. That was basically the idea we gave him. The result speaks for itself.

What could one expect from a live Nihilo show?
Power, aggression, atmosphere, a moment outside of the everyday affair.

Any strange or scary happening while on the road or at a show?
Ok, there was this show in Chur here in Switzerland where almost everything went wrong. Big venue with a small crowd, not much food, the few people who showed up put their back against us, everyone was pissed. After driving at home (Nils, Adrian and myself), the other 2 members (Nicola and Ragulan) wrote us from the hotel that they received a chamber with only 1 bed. We laughed our asses off! Well, 1 hour later we took a break to drink a coffee (it was 2 or 3 in the morning). Only 1 hour from home we started the engine. Unfortunatly the clutch of the car was broken. So we had to wait almost an hour for a mechanic, just receive the news that he couldn’t fix it there. We called a taxi and came back between 5 or 6 am. Karma is a bitch!!!

What was the experience like opening for Pestilence and Sinister, and did you get to hang out with them at all?
I wasn’t member at those shows yet, but showed up to see those killer bands. The reaction after the shows from the band was great. They had a lot of fun sharing the stage with’em. Yes, they hanged out, and so did I. It was a pleasure to meet these legends!

If Nihilo could open up for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Oh man, that’s a really hard one! Too many to mention! Well, I only can speak for myself. For me it would be Slayer (or Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Necrovore, put your favorite death/thrash/black or whatever metal band on here)
Why? Because it’s Slayer!!!!

Has Nihilo ever played here in the States or plan to do so in future days?
We never played in the States, but really want to do shows and tours in the U.S.!!!! Just contact us!

What’s up next for Nihilo?
We are now looking forward to release “Dum Spiro Spero” on vinyl and to do shows as much as we can! Maybe a tour in 2015?

Any messages for metal fans reading this who should go and check your band out?
