NameSake is promising pop rocking band from the Atlanta, GA area who are really beginning to make a name for themselves well beyond the confines of the steamy South. Currently on the road for the Summer Of Love Tour 2012 with Allstar Weekend and Honor Society, there is no doubt that NameSake is gaining a good amount of fans with each and every show. Their debut album entitled Borders & Fences was recently unleashed through Imagen Records, packed to the brim with wildly infectious tunes that should appeal to many a music fan. Here is a recent interview we conducted with vocalist Will Crafton to find out more about this amazing band on the rise, their songs, stories from the road, and other topics. Read on…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in NameSake, and how long the band has been together.
I’m Will and I play the vocals! This project has been around since my senior year in high school!
Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like?
The band is based out of Atlanta, GA! Our local seen has died out of the rock music. That is why we tour!
How has the tour with Allstar Weekend going and what has been some of the highlights?
The tour has been amazing. We have grown so close with all the bands on this tour and I am going to be sad when it ends. The highlight would have to be being able to reach a demographic of fans which would otherwise be impossible for NameSake!
Is there any story or concept behind the CD title Borders & Fences?
The entire CD is a concept! Borders & Fences is about overcoming obstacles and adversity. Let nothing stand in the way of your dreams.
Select two songs from Borders & Fences and what inspired the lyrics.
“The Movement” is about finding what makes you strong. And using it to move on and become more in your life.
“Worlds Away” is about a past relationship of mine. I was going through so much with the band (tour, moving, recording) and the distance between us felt interplanetary. Thus “Worlds Away” ; )
What was it like working with noted producer James Paul Wisner and what was his overall contribution to the recording?
It was a dream come true. NameSake has always been a fan of his work and being able to work with him was indeed life changing. We had a chemistry like a seasoned football team. Making the record was seamless.
How did you wind up signing to Imagen Records?
We got label attention after opening for a UFC fight in Atlanta, GA. They asked us to do a show case and they loved us! Ever since that day we have worked hand in hand with our label.
What could one expect from a Namesake live show?
High energy, killer songs, and a personal concert experience you will never forget : )
What bands or projects were you all in prior to NameSake?
Brad, Kevin and I had played music together long before NameSake was a concept. After getting label support we were able to add members Troy and Seth to the line up.
Any strange or scary happenings while out on the road that you could share?
We have played a few haunted venues on this tour. We haven’t met any ghosts yet but that won’t stop us from exploring empty olympic sized swimming pools or abandoned train stations!
If your music was a donut, what kind would it be and why?
I’d have to say glazed. Because a donut without glaze is just a donut. And we aren’t just a donut ; )
If NameSake could open up for any band either current or from the past, which band would that be and why?
We get this question a lot and we always say the same thing unanimously. 30 Seconds to Mars! The way they interact with their fans and make them apart of the show is what makes them amazing in our eyes. And we want to spread that legacy with our own music.
What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most after hearing your music for the first time?
We spent a lot of time making it. So we hope the life lessons our music is written about can be taken on in our fan’s lives.
What’s up next for NameSake after the Allstar Weekend Tour?
We have a lot of really cool things happening that we want to keep on the DL. Keep checking our social media for details. Cause it’s coming soon
Any final words of wisdom?
Live life. We love you all so much and we can’t wait to see you all at our shows!
