Based out of the Lancaster, PA area, One Year Later has recently been spending a good amount of time on the road, touring in support of their brand new album entitled The Sound Of A Broken World. The band has found themselves signed to CI Records, a label that has launched the careers of such notable acts as August Burns Red and Texas In July. Judging by what’s heard on the record and the mileage the band is adding up on the road, expect One Year Later to hit the big leagues and to be headlining their own shows in no time at all. Here is a recent interview we conducted with one of the OYL members which they were out on tour with Texas In July and Like Moths To Flames…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in One Year Later, and how long the band has been together.
My name is Max Getz, I play guitar in OYL, and we’ve been active since about April 2011.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based out of Lancaster, PA. The metal scene here is ridiculous, I mean we’re coming up in the wake of bands like August Burns Red and Texas In July. The bar is set really high by those guys, so it really gives us the drive to put out the best music we can. As far as a local band, definitely check out “Scout’s Honor“. They aren’t metal or anything, more like pop-rock/ pop-punk, but they RULE. Give them a listen.
How did the cooperation with CI Records come about?
We started playing shows almost exclusively for CI Productions, selling tickets, and working as hard as we could to prove ourselves. We tracked a full length, showed it to Jeremy (Owner) and he offered us a contract.
Is there any story or concept behind the CD title The Sound Of A Broken World?
The title just embodies all the concepts behind the songs on the record… from betrayal to letting go, finding strength in yourself to never give up, and the loyalty and friendship you find in brotherhood. There is definitely positive aspects to the record, but as a whole, the title and songs are dark.. the world is a tough place and we find that out more and more every day.
Select two songs from The Sound Of A Broken World and what inspired the lyrics.
Memories : This is one of the 2 “positive” spirited songs on the record, and it’s really just about remembering people we lost in our lives. We all have close friends and family that have left the world way to soon.. and this song commemorates them and lets them know, they may be gone, but they’ll never be forgotten.
Shapeshifter: This song (like the title implies) is about the awful process of watching someone you love and care about slowly changing for the worse; as well the personal reflection you experience while it happens. It’s like, a person you knew so well has now become something you can barely recognize.
Who did the cover art for The Sound Of A Broken World and how much input did you have on it?
It was a collaborative effort between Adam Serrano and Andrew Zell (our other guitar player). We pretty much told them the title and to run with it, and when we saw it, we knew it was perfect.
What is a live One Year Later show like for those of us who have yet to see you play?
Energy, energy, energy! We put EVERYTHING we have into our live show, and pride ourselves in being as heavy and tight as possible.
How is the Texas In July tour going and have you met any of the other bands on the tour before?
It’s absolutely amazing! We are all super close to the TIJ guys and they’ve really been helpful in showing us the ropes and the ins and outs of a full US tour. We didn’t know any of the bands before hand, but they are all amazing guys and we’ve become great friends with them. To play with these bands we admire and look up to every night is a dream come true. So grateful for this to be our first tour!
What are you expecting about the tour with Ice Nine Kills and Close To Home? What are you looking forward too?
Expecting it to be awesome! Heard a lot of good things about INK and CTH, as well as For All I Am, and once again we are so blessed to be out on the road with bands of that caliber 2 weeks after we get home from the TIJ tour. It’s wild! I am probably most looking forward to playing shows every night (that’s what it’s all about, ya know?) and meeting and becoming friends with new dudes who share the love in music we do.
Any interesting or scary stories from the road you could share?
2 or 3 days ago we were driving from Evansville, Indiana to St. Louis, and the side window on our van literally ripped off and smashed against our trailer and shattered to the ground. So weird. We’ve only really been on tour for a week, so I’m sure there will be lots more to come!
When could we expect to see One Year Later playing some shows in the Los Angeles/OC area?
We (had) a show in Bakersfield, CA tomorrow (4/7) and one in Anaheim, CA April 9th. It’s a part of The Last Reality Tour with Hundredth, The Air I Breathe, Like Moths To Flames, and Texas in July!
What would you like a listener to remember the most after hearing your music for the very first time?
I think what would be most rewarding for me is to have something that draws the listener back to the music, whether it be a chorus, break down, or even a drum fill.. that little thing that brings all of us back to our favorite songs, ya know? That’s when you know there’s something special in the music.
Any final words of wisdom?
I guess the best thing I can say is to do everything you do for the right reasons; and always try and see the positives in every situation. Work HARD, and it will pay off!
