Based out of Germany, the mighty Paradox remain underground thrash metal legends of the highest order. Tales Of The Weird is the band’s sixth magnum opus, recently unleashed worldwide through AFM Records. In this interview with front man Charly Steinhauer, we discuss the stunning new album, their live shows, German beer, the Dio / Rainbow connection, and other topics of interest. Read on and learn about the “thrash with class” known as Paradox…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Paradox, and how long the band has been together.
Hello, I´m CHARLY STEINHAUER, songwriter, singer, guitar player and producer of German veterans PARADOX. The band was founded by myself and AXEL BLAHA (former drummer) in February 1986.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local metal scene like there?
We come from Würzburg in mid/south Germany. It´s between Nuremberg and Frankfurt with bands like TANKARD and VENDETTA celebrating their music.
Is there any overall story or concept behind the new album Tales Of The Weird?
“TALES OF THE WEIRD” is not really a concept album. Each song has his own serious topic, written by former VENDETTA singer ACHIM “DAXX” HÖMERLEIN. He is our 5th bandmember.
Select two songs from Tales Of The Weird and what inspired the lyrical content?
“BRUTALIZED” describes the apparent rise juvenile delinquency. “SLASHDEAD” is about environmentally destructive greed of profit.
How does Tales Of The Weird compare to the previous Paradox releases?
Each record has his own challenge and wrote his own words. It sounds like PARADOX. We found the right balance between heavy riffs and melody.. In the past here in Germany they called it “THRASH WITH CLASS.”
With so many members coming and going since your beginnings in 1986, what do you think has kept Paradox thriving after all of this time?
We never changed the singer and I`m still writing all the music. All albums received overwhelming reviews in Europe and Japan. We have a really good fanbase.
Has Paradox ever toured here in the States? If so, what was the experience like?
In 2010 we were booked on PROGPOWER USA, but we were forced to cancel caused by line up problems. We hope to get the second chance.
What could one expect from a live Paradox show?
No special effects. Just rockin the stage to kick ass. We are still hungry and each PARADOX show spreads out a lot of energy.
Who did the cover art for Tales Of The Weird and how much input did you have on it?
CLAUDIO BERGAMIN is our coverartist since “ELECTRIFY” (2008). He comes from VALP ARAISO, CHILE and worked with artists like KING DIAMOND and ROB HALFORD as well. We gave him our vision and ideas. It should remind a bit on our second album “HERESY” (1989).but the topic is about the Maya calendar prophecys. (world´s end).
Germany is of course famous for their BEER!!!! What is your favorite German beer and why?
Haha. Each city is proud of his own beer. That´s why I prefer Würzburger Hofbräu, but I also like Distel or Flensburger Pils. Awesome dark beer as well!
What made you decide to cover A Light In The Black by Rainbow?
It`s our personal tribute to RONNIE JAMES DIO. I love RAINBOW. “RISING” from 1976. It was a big challenge for me to sing this song. DIO was my hero (R.I.P.)
Have you ever met Ronnie James Dio and if so, what were your impressions of him?
I only met his cousin David “Rock” Feinstein from the RODS and we talked a lot about DIO and his experiences in ELF, when they started their career together.
What’s up in this New Year for Paradox?
From January to March we do a lot of promotional stuff, interviews, radio stations, video and preparations for live shows.
Any final words of wisdom?
It time to rock the US . We are influenced by the Bay Area metal scene and we would like to share the stage with EXODUS or DEATH ANGEL again. FORBIDDEN, HEATHEN or TESTAMENT as well.
To all readers….give “TALES OF THE WEIRD” a chance and listen to our album. It´s definitely a masterpiece of German thrash with class!
Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions! Hope to see Paradox out here in the States sometime.
