vanswarped2014The Summer of 2014 is upon us, which means the iconic Vans Warped Tour is about to hit the road!  Now in it’s 20th year of existence, the travelling festival remains a vital part of the summer for music fans all across the country.  In Part One of our Countdown To Warped Tour, we chat with founder Kevin Lyman about what to expect at the shows, how a band could become noticed for future Warped dates, what parents attending with their kids may encounter, and other timely topics of interest.  We also have interviews with four of the bands who will be on the road with Warped this summer, including Alive Like Me, Captain Capa. Close Your Eyes, and Courage My Love.  Our annual Countdown To Warped Tour shall now commence…

What do you think has kept Warped Tour alive and vital for 20 years now?
I think it’s kind of adapting with the times, to be 100 percent honest. We pay homage to the roots of where we started, but we’re always looking forward and ahead. And adapting with the audience. I’d love to be booking Bad Religion, NoFx and all my favorite bands. But a 9-hour festival in the sun really isn’t really conducive to a 47-50 year old person necessarily. It still feels like a backyard party – there’s still a value to the show. I think there’s still that sense of discovery for kids to come to the Warped Tour. The Warped Tour’s kind of that thinking kid’s show. The one that doesn’t mind thinking – they come with an open mind and they’re willing to learn. This festival is not for every kid out there. A lot of kids want to come and hear the one hit on the radio and that’s what they do – the majority of the populace go to shows like that.  Warped Tour is about the kid that wants to come and explore music – kind of explore a lifestyle. We’re more of a lifestyle county fair that comes to your town once a year than necessarily a music show.

What could parents accompanying their kids look forward to at Warped Tour this year?
The parents should look forward to some of the music – if they open their minds and watch bands like The Bad Rabbits. They’re going to find a lot of music that would be digestible to a parent in a way. Your parent is always like, “God, turn off that damn music…” no matter what generation we’ve been in. There’s so many influences in music now and kids are exposing themselves now to so many different things. I think that the parents, if they took a little walk around the grounds, are going to have a nice time and see some bands. The parents can go learn what their kids want to be involved in. We’re now in a society where kids are looking how to maybe give back at an earlier age. Seeing the canned food drive, seeing Keep A Breast and (the other organizations) –they can understand more where their kids are thinking and what they’re about. And also there’s always surprises at the Warped Tour. I think a lot of parents make friends at the Warped Tour with other parents. They go, “Whoa, you to concerts with your kids?  I do too!” And I see parents all of a sudden exchanging information like, “Hey, maybe we could carpool next time” or do something like that.

The Bad Rabbits are awesome by the way! Where did you find them?
I brought them a couple of years ago, and they’re the kind of band that I know there’s going to be a time and place we’re they’re really going to connect, and I think it’s going to be this summer with the Warped Tour. When I brought them a few years ago, I think Warped Tour was a little nichier musically. But the kids influences in what they’re listening too is so broad right now – they’re going to appreciate The Bad Rabbits. And The Bad Rabbits now have a team around them that can help them take advantage of being in the Warped Tour. And you mix them in with bands like Wax and Watsky – there’s a lot of cool influences out there.

What makes you excited about a band and want to put them on the Warped Tour?
I think number one, they have to have a great live show to be on Warped Tour. I think the work ethic, for me, of a band that’s willing to work hard on their career and engage on the tour. And having some good songs. It’s not that complicated. I know that there’s those certain number of bands I have to book for the kids that fall into that Warped category kind of thing wants to see. But now if I book 15-16 of them, they’re gonna be happy, and then I can take that lineup as wide and far as I want musically. And that’s why the Warped lineup is so diverse. It makes me happy when people write “the most diverse lineup of any festival.” And I really believe it is, in the long run.

What has it been like to have family members such as your daughter working on Warped Tour?
Well now I’m going to have both daughters with me out on the road. You know it’s interesting – we’re looking at the second generation of persons working on the road. I’m really excited. I think there’s 10 kids working on the road whose parents had worked on the road at one point. There’s one whole bus of them. My older daughter used to travel with me, but now she’s going to move on a bus with a lot of her friends and peers that have all gotten jobs. What kind of cool thing is that – giving them that experience? That makes me proud. And now my younger daughter who will be coming out on the road with me will be kind of learning and experiencing it in a way my other daughter did when she started. It’s great! I wouldn’t want to be on the road if I didn’t have my family out there anymore.

What advice do you have for the various bands who follow Warped Tour all across the country?
I don’t want to say I encourage or discourage it. I understand why they’re doing it, because they can actually have access to the kids in the lots. They could do a lot as a young act. But you just don’t jump in a van and do it. We have professional drivers – we have people who travel and take care of us. We had a van accident a few years ago of some kids that were following. I always talk to them about the long drives. And did I want to listen to an adult when I was 17? Probably not too much. I was invincible and I could do whatever I want. So I don’t encourage or discourage – I understand why they’re doing it. But I wish a lot of them would look at it and realize, “Okay, we can’t make every show. We gotta take a rest. We gotta take a day off.”

After a long day on Warped Tour and you go back to your bus, what kind of music do you listen to?
Usually a lot of old jazz – some reggae – some blues – I could be listening to anything. I really love City and Colour late at night going down the highway – just chillin’ listening to City and Colour.

Do you have any messages for kids looking forward to attending Warped Tour this year?
As always, come with an open mind – pick up someone if they fall down. Take care of yourself. Come with an open mind – that’s what Warped Tour is about. Warped Tour is about a community as much as anything else. And you’re now part of our community and we’re there to support you and try to allow you to have a great time in a great environment.

Alive Like Me

120_1_alm_high_400x267Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
What’s up, it’s Jairus Kersey. I sing in Alive Like Me. I was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon and that’s where the band started!

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
Well considering it’s been a dream of mine since I was about 14 years old I’m excited to get to experience anything and everything this tour throws at me. Even the stressful times will be some good memories made. And yes this is my first time!

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
We will always give it our all. The guys in the band are such hard working dudes. You’ll never know if they’re having a bad day. So expect to see high energy and have a lot of fun.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our debut record coming this summer is titled “Only Forever“. The name is meant to portray the fact that we all have a short time to live our lives and it brings light to the fact that you should live your life how you want. That way you won’t be upset when your time comes.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
Our album title track “Only Forever
Has exactly the same meaning as the album. Live your life the way you want and love every second. Because when it’s all over, being able to reflect positively on your life and the memories you created will bring you peace.

Also our track “Our Time Down Here
This song is about the value of learning from your own mistakes and understanding that your life belongs to you. A reminder that the only expectations you should feel pressured to meet are the ones you have set for your self.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Well we try and look on the bright side of everything. Playing early means you’re done early… So we get to go to sleep! Or we get a lot more time to hang out with fans!

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Well… Our first tour just kicked off on the 2nd of May. It’s been a lot of non stop driving… But I’ll be sure to fill you all in once it’s over. I’m sure we will have some great stories!

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Paramore or Thirty Seconds to Mars. They are both big influences and the entire band would probably die to meet either of them.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Just get ready for an amazing experience. There are a lot of great bands that have dedicated their lives to making music! So go support them and have the time of your life!

Captain Capa

captaincapa2014Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
I’m Hannes, singer, producer and writer of the electronic pop band Captain Capa, based in a small town in Thuringia, Germany.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
We’ve had the chance to be a part of Warped Tour for a few weeks back in 2012, which is why we are super excited to finally be back again. Warped Tour feels like this crazy parallel-universe, where everyone’s so friendly to each other, sharing a common passion – no matter how famous or big he or she is. It feels especially crazy for us, since traveling the United States itself is something very special for us.

What advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Try to catch up with as many people as possible! Everyone we met was nothing but helpful. At first, the whole experience can be quite overwhelming and stressful, but once you found some friends to show you the ropes, it gets easier and easier. Also don’t rush into it expecting you’ll be the next big thing by the time it’s over. It’s hard to stand out of the crowd of 100 great acts – so just be yourself out there and show what’s unique about you as an artist and you’ll find your spot.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
We try to keep our show as rough as possible. We’re an electronic pop band, but we’re coming from a garagepunk – and very rock-based background and that’s where we take our energy on stage from. So expect it to be energetic and wild. Also we can fix broken hearts with beats. Onstage. I swear.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
In October 2013 we released our latest record FOXES, which is an emotional roller coaster about growing up, moving out, changing as a person, etc. For us, it was the whole experience of being a band and being on tour, that shook a few things up in our lives, so thats where the inspiration came from. The fox became some kind of a symbol for us by accident, the song “Foxes” might explain that a little better. Of course it’s a metaphor for a certain kind of people, but in the end it just felt like it was meant to be.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
At the moment we can’t get enough of playing “Ikari” live. I actually wrote the lyrics when we were at Warped Tour in 2012. It’s about this strange feeling of being a thousand miles across the globe doing something you’d never believe you’d pull off, while missing someone pretty hard. The protagonist, whoever it might be, fixes his desires with getting wasted – which doesn’t seem to help at all, of course. Haha. We’re also looking forward to play Arsenic, we just shot a video for it in the alps. It stands out from the rest of our set because it’s so different, it’s kind of RNB driven, very dark and electronic. The lyrics can be interpreted as a dialogue between yourself and some kind of inner monster you’re about to overcome – may it be an addiction or a vice or something like that.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
We’re actually not afraid of any of the slots – we’ve played every possible slot in 2012 and they all come with ups and downs. Every gig you play at Warped is so different, you know. It depends on where the stage is set up, who’s playing on the other stages, the weather, the crowd. Even a very early slot could end up being simply awesome!

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
We played a tiny gig in Tokyo back in December and had a very strange movie-like night involving hidden nightclubs, drinking a lot and meeting a lot of weird, amazing people. In the end we met this very big rockband from Europe, so we partied with them. On the other side of the world. We almost missed our flight home and just sat in the plane thinking “what the fuck just happened?” It’s hard to put in words but the sheer weirdness of that night will always be one of our greatest memories.

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
We’d love to open up for Jimmy Eat World, honestly. It’s the one single band we’re both absolutely passionate about. They never were that famous in Germany, so you guys might feel a little different about it, but we just love them and they inspired a lot of our early songwriting and singing.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Keep an eye out for upcoming, fresh and new acts! We discovered so many good bands when we were part of Warped, you’ll be missing out if you stick to headliners. But of course, go see your heroes and legends! Take care of each other and have a great summer. And say Hi to us.

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
My name is Alex, I play bass, and I am from Abilene, TX.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
This is our first time on Warped Tour, so I am mostly just looking forward to the experience. There are some bands like Less Than Jake that I grew up watching at Warped so I am looking forward to touring with those guys. There are also some new artists like K.flay that I am looking forward to meeting and touring with.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
I think it is safe to say you could expect high energy and fun from our set. We plan to blast through our set with a lot of intensity and cram in as many songs as we can. We just want to deliver a fun experience for fans.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our latest CD is called Line in the Sand and pretty much has a theme of social injustice. We constantly see things happening around us that are frustrating; mainly in the way people are treating each other. This album is a statement that we have had enough and would like to see a change in humanity.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
We will definitely be playing “Kings of John Payne” from the new album because it is a fun nostalgic song about friendship. The song was inspired by Sam’s time in high school with his friends, which I think resonates with all of us. I am sure we will be playing some older songs as well. “Something Needs to Change” is my personal favorite and has helped me through a lot of things over the years.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
I don’t care what slot we play. I’m going to pour everything I have into whatever crowd is there for us to play to.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Someone ran into our trailer in San Antonio. It worked out though because we got a sweet new Harley trailer with flames on it. And who doesn’t love flame decals?

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
I fortunately got to open for my favorite band, With Honor, a few years ago and have remained in contact with them. I would like to play with them again someday. More than anything though, I want to play with the Foo Fighters, so if Dave Grohl reads this….let’s hook something up!

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Stay cool and hydrated! Warped Tour is a long day and gets super hot! Listen to Less Than Jake, Saves the Day, Terror, and K.flay.

Courage My Love

CourageMyLove_S3_0863-300_400x262Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
I’m Mercedes, the lead singer and guitarist of Courage My Love! We’re Canadian (yayyy!) based out of Toronto , Ontario!

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
It’s our first time on the entire Warped Tour, although we have played the Toronto date a few years in a row now. I’m most excited to make new friends, meet fans and have fun in the sun.

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Every band could use this advice… deodorant under the arms and gold bond in your shoes!

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
We’re energetic and passionate live! We love to involve our fans in the show as just have a good time on stage. Our show has some high points and epic moments, so bring the tissues!

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Becoming” is our newest EP. It’s title was inspired by where we were and are in our lives, the uncertainty of growing up and having to make hard decisions and face new responsibilities, the doubts you face as you get older, the newly found confidence as you become independent, and the constant journey to find yourself and discover who you truly are and what you will become.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
Lost Cause” is one of my favourites. It’s about finding someone who loves you and accepts you for who you are, flaws and all. It’s about how we use the perception and appreciation of the ones we truly love to validate ourselves in our own eyes. It’s about feeling unworthy of the beautiful love you receive. If you’ve ever truly been in love before, you can definitely relate to this song!

You Don’t Know How” is about feeling held back or held down by someone or something in your life. It’s about shedding the negativity, breaking the chains, becoming independent and realizing that you are perfectly capable of handling yourself on your own. It’s about learning to trust and rely on yourself and the freedom and confidence that comes with that. When your crutch is taken away, do you fall to the ground or learn to stand on your own two feet?

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Since we’re on the Ernie Ball Stage and there’s usually a battle of the bands before any of the Warped bands play, I don’t think we need to worry about that, luckily! But if we did, we’d suck it up and put on as great a show as we can. It’s Warped Tour!! We’re just stoked to be there.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Well at one of our latest shows a couple got engaged during our set! We had a banner up with “Will You Marry Me” on it and she said yes! So that was pretty crazy!

If you could open up for any band, either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Ahhhh this question kills me every time! Way too many amazing bands and artists to open up for that I admire! I guess Joan Jett is an obvious one. She is probably the only person on earth I would ever fan girl over. I respect and look up to her so much. Jimmy Eat World and Brand New are some other favorites!

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Thank you so much for taking the time to check us out, I hope you enjoy our set and most importantly don’t be afraid to come up and talk to us at the signings! We want to meet all of you and we’re just as nervous to make a good impression as you are, so don’t worry about saying anything profound. Have fun and drink tons of water!

Close Your Eyes

linesand1Line In The Sand by Close Your Eyes (Victory Records)

A lot of the bands trying to break into this scene are the same thing over and over again. Christian Rock band Close Your Eyes brings a new flavor of hard rock and metal to the table that will definitely take them to places that they deserve to be. Their new album Line In The Sand jams harder than a lot of other music out these days. With the fast paced songs like Days Of Youth and The End, the circle pit will surely erupt along with everyone singing along.

What I personally enjoy about this band is the mix of vocals from new member Sam Ryder Robinson. His screaming is just as raw and brutal as you could want but his singing is perfect for singing along to. It makes me want to bang my head as well as sing all the lyrics.

Don’t underestimate the bands ability to be heavy either! With the song Skeletons, you are sure to get your heavy fix.  Close Your Eyes has a pop punk mix along with hardcore as well as some rock and blues! This being their third studio album, it has all the elements of good music and they are sure to go far if they keep along this very promising path.

Long time members Brett Calloway (guitar), Andrew Rodriguez (guitar), Sonny Vega (bass) as well as new drummer Jordan Hatfield and vocalist Sam Robinson have put together something new and great. I know they have gained a fan and I will most definitely be covering them as much as I can. This album/band is a high recommendation to anyone who likes a new taste of rock music.

Canada’s hardcore heroes Comeback Kid make their highly anticipated return to the U.S. on a 2012 headlining tour with labelmates Close Your Eyes; release “Do Yourself A Favor” video teaser

Premiere hardcore group Comeback Kid is set to embark on their first headlining U.S. tour of 2012. With something in store for everyone, the line-up includes support from labelmates Close Your Eyes along with Foundation, Such Gold and Living With Lions.

Comeback Kid frontman Andrew Neufeld expresses his enthusiasm for the line-up , “We really enjoy playing with all different kinds of bands and mixing up bills. This tour is a great example of that. “

Neufeld goes on to say, “This tour covers the majority of the U.S. and we’re psyched to finally do a headlining tour in the U.S. for Symptoms + Cures.”

Comeback Kid concluded their packed year of touring in late 2011 through North America and abroad. The band was recently announced as a performer at this year’s South By So What?! Festival in March.

The group will debut the full music video for “Do Yourself A Favor” in the coming weeks, but for now you can watch the teaser and check out the full list of tour dates here.
