An Interview with
The Forgotten Secret

by Kenneth Morton

The Forgotten Secret is an unsigned band from Denver, CO who play post-hardcore music in the grand tradition of Underoath and follow city band Drop Dead, Gorgeous. Highwire Daze had the opportunity to host one of their live shows at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood last summer, and their set was absolutely dynamic - winning over a good deal of the local Angelino kids.

Their self-released CD The Reach For The Unknown has garned TFS a lot of attention well beyond the Rocky Mountains. In addition, the guys have just recorded two brand new songs - now available for download on Itunes. Highwire Daze decided to reach out and catch up with TFS to find out all the latest happenings. Read on...

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in The Forgotten Secret and how long the band has been together.
Hey! My name is Steven Bain and I play bass/vocals in The Forgotten Secret. We have been a band for a little over two years now.

What are your impressions of the ever-changing Denver music scene and your band’'s role in it?
The music scene in Denver has its ups and downs. We have the privilege of having some really awesome and dedicated fans. I personally think the music scene in Denver is dying out really fast.

Tell me about the CD title The Reach For The Unknown - is there any story or concept behind the title?
We basically thought of the concept when we first started the band because we were really young and inexperienced, we didn't really know what to expect from the music industry. We wanted to reach our full potential being the "Reach" and the "Unknown" being the experiences we have yet to have.

Compared to many of the local bands, you guys have actually been together for awhile. What do you think the secret is in keeping a band together?
I believe the secret to keeping a band together is taking into account everyone's opinions, and putting what's best for the band first.

You have just released two new songs that really show a remarkable growth and maturity in your music. What inspired the lyrics for the two songs?
Our singer Kyle wrote the lyrics for Another Night One The Road while we we on tour last summer. When writing this song he wanted to express what tour was really like for all of us, and how much we loved being on the road. As for Living In Anticipation, the song is about trying to be patient for what we have coming our way as a band.

How close is The Forgotten Secret to recording an all new CD?
We have tons of new songs and more ideas we are tossing around, but we are pretty low on cash to record a new CD.

Have you guys had any label interest yet?
We have had a couple labels interested in us and almost signed to one but it just wasn't the right time for us to sign.

What was your experience like going on tour and what were some of the highlights?
Going on tour was an unbelievable experience for us to have achieved at our young age. For me personally it was my first time being outside of Colorado. Seeing different kids every night coming out to a show to support us was probably the best highlight during the tour.

You guys did a show at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood. What were your overall impressions of Hollywood?
Hollywood was by far the best place we have ever played. The venue sounded great, the kids were very supportive; and even though Scary Kids Scaring Kids was playing a couple blocks away, there was still a ton of kids that came out to the show.

With the members of The Forgotten Secret being so young, how supportive are your parents? And what did they think when you announced that you all were going on tour?
All of our parents are very supportive in their own way. When we announced that we were going on tour they weren't too fond of the idea, but our drummer's dad ended up going with us so they decided to let us go.

Are you or any of the other TFS members involved with any other outside bands or projects?
Mike (Lead Guitar) is in a side project called Calling Out West which is more mainstream rock, kind of like The Rocket Summer meets My Favorite Highway.

Describe a live TFS show for those who have yet to see you play...
We're very energetic and we try to get the crowd as pumped and involved as possible.

Who are some of the bigger bands you have opened for?
We have opened for bands such as Mayday Parade, Breathe Carolina, LoveHateHero, The Fall Of Troy, Memphis May Fire, Four Letter Lie, Eyes Set To Kill, I Am Ghost, Lower Deffenition, The Devil Wears Prada, A Skylit Drive, Alesana, and many more.

Any messages for people reading this who would be into checking your band out?
If you're into bands like Underoath, BlessTheFall, The Devil Wears Prada, and Drop Dead, Gorgeous, then we may suit your style.

The members of The Forgotten Secret are Kyle Coy on vocals, Ryan Sorrell on guitar and vocals, Mike Anderson on guitar, Steven Bain on bass and vocals, and Andy Woodson on drums.
