Tools Of Creation: Let There Be Rock and Chaos!

Based out of the Manotick, Ontario area, when Tools Of Creation show up at a venue to play, a lot of hard partying and good times are bound to ensue.  This power trio knows who to rock, citing influences as diverse as AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Bachman Turner Overdrive.  Their latest creation is aptly entitled Adventures In Chaos, and it’s bound to garner the band a good deal of attention.  Here is a recent interview with conducted with the three TOC members to find out more about this hardworking band.  Let the party and chaos unfold…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Tools Of Creation, and how long the band has been together.
Stew: My name is Stewart Scharf. I write and arrange music, lyrics, play drums and sing. The band has been together about ten years.
Ben: Hi, I’m Ben DiMaria and I play lead/rhythm guitar and lead vocals.
Chris: I’m Chris Rock and I play bass guitar and sing.

Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there?
We are based out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada – a little town called Manotick. The local music scene is healthy but not really big especially for Indie Bands. We love playing all over, lots of really awesome out the way places to play in when not playing in Ottawa and that’s where you meet some of the coolest and craziest people around and that’s what it’s all about – the FANZ.

Is there any story or concept behind the CD title Adventures In Chaos?
Not one story, a lifetime of stories, but you have to wait for the books – kidding, but seriously Adventures in Chaos is the story of us growing up and trying to make it in a band since the age of 13. Partying seriously, a lot of partying.

Where do you get the ideas for some of your lyrics? Please select two songs from your CD and what they were inspired by.
Stew: I get ideas for my lyrics from my life. Two of my favourite songs from the CD are “Crash Course” and “Too Much Isn’t Enough” – inspired by partying.
Ben: The things we say and did in our teens, normal people didn’t see or do until their 20’s. That’s why I say in the song “Bridge Too Far” we lived our 20’s in our teens, its been one hell of a fun crazy ride so far and it just keeps getting better. I’ll tell you what I love My Love is Rock and Roll and Too Much Isn’t Enough.
Chris: Life and life experiences give the ideas for the lyrics.

Ben and Stew have known each other since they were 12. Were you always in bands together and if not, and what point did you guys decide you want to start up a band?
We were in a band together the day after we met in a friends basement. We have been in numerous bands over the years and several with Chris as well.

What could one expect from a live Tools Of Creation show?
High energy and heavy grooves. They can expect an adrenaline filled party … a good time with kick ass tunes. Like being at a wild bash that you don’t want to leave.

Where did you get the band name Tools Of Creation?
That’s a secret.

Who did the artwork on Adventures In Chaos and how much input did you have on it?
Lou DiMaria did the artwork and graphics and Cheryl DiMaria set up booklet for inside front cover for the CD and we loved it, so we went with it. We were looking for something to fill in the centre of the graphic and one of our friends drew a sword which gave us other ideas.

What do you think makes the trio of Tools Of Creation work so well together?
We are friends and our talents compliment each other.

Has Tools Of Creation ever played in Los Angeles or plan to do so in the future?
Not yet, but as soon as you can get us there we will rock you.

What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most after hearing Adventures In Chaos for the very first time?
Too Much Isn’t Enough.

Any final words of wisdom?
If you really have something and believe in yourself, never give up, if you try hard enough it can happen.
