THIS WORLD IS OURS TOUR with ESCAPE THE FATE, ATTACK ATTACK!, THE WORD ALIVE, MEST, and SECRETS, House Of Blues – Sunset Strip, April 21, 2012

This World Is Ours Tour made its way to the Southland, with a stop at the House Of Blues on the world famous Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Escape The Fate and Attack Attack! were co-headlining the sold out event, two incredible brigades joining forces for a much anticipated cross country trek. Impressive support would be supplied by The Word Alive, Mest, and Secrets. Five bands in all, and you could certainly tell the crowd was ready for the sonic adventures ahead.

It was good to see so many people already in the audience at the beginning of the show, ready to see their favorite bands as well as more than willing to support to the openings acts.

At this point, the tour was pretty much at the halfway mark, and yet with the energy and enthusiasm exuded throughout, it almost felt like an opening night. One thing for sure – this was going to be a long yet memorable evening in Tinseltown, and at the early hour of 6:30, it was time for the takeover to commence…

SECRETS

“I am the enemy” was the rallying cry as Secrets took to the stage, opening their set with the explosive strains of The Oath. Based out of the thriving San Diego music scene where the tour actually stopped at the previous night, Secrets recently released their debut CD entitled The Ascent on Rise Records. Judging by the perfect mix of infectious pop choruses and supreme heaviness (along with the wonderful crowd reaction), just don’t expect this band to remain enigmatic for long. Melodies was a set highlight, showcasing how absolutely talented the band is in the songwriting department. “You must be scared of your reflection in the mirror” was the standout sing along chorus in Blindside, followed by the driving intensity of The Hardest Part. Other songs performed that left a lasting impression included 40 Below and Somewhere In Hiding. Xander Bourgeois is an outstanding front man, screaming out the lyrics with a fiery sense of conviction. Also noteworthy is guitarist and vocalist Richard Rogers, whose distinct and memorable voice really shines through. A terrific way to kick off the evening, from a band destined to be headlining their very own tour in future days!

MEST

Mest is nothing short of pop punk legends, complete with the up and downs of a brilliant career that started back in 1995. The odd band out on This World Is Ours Tour to be sure, Mest was personally invited by Craig Mabbitt of Escape The Fate for the entire run. “I didn’t even know these guys were still around,” muttered some guy behind me, but Mest instantly won over the crowd with their wildly rambunctious set of in-your-face punk rocking goodness. A few of the audience members were invited onstage to make raging stage dives into the crowd, including a guy the band affectionately dubbed “Waldo.” Songs causing rabid mayhem and massive circle pits included their brand spanking new single Almost, as well as older favorites Until I Met You, and Rooftops. A triumphant return to form for Mest that not only thrilled the old diehards in the HOB, but surely gained the band a whole new collection of fans as well.

THE WORD ALIVE

Although The Word Alive could easily headline their own events, their participation within This World Is Ours Tour definitely made attendance to the show all the more mandatory. New drummer Luke Holland made his debut, learning all of the songs and exuding a good deal of charisma and all-out talent from behind the kit. Front man Telle Smith remains a tremendous presence – the rare performer who can both scream and sing with a good deal of effectiveness. He even jumped fearlessly into the crowd towards the end of the set, nearly losing his pants before returning to the stage. Throughout the set, lead guitarist Zack Hansen unleashed some super intensive guitar solos. Rounding out the dynamic lineup were Tony Pizzuti on rhythm guitar and Daniel Shapiro on bass. In addition to crowd favorites The Wretched, Lights And Stones, and 2012, The Word Alive presented a new song entitled Wishmaster from the upcoming Life Cycles magnum opus. Massive touring has definitely rendered The Word Alive a relentless force to be reckoned with! Incidental Trivia: Back in the bands origins prior to their signing with Fearless Records, Craig Mabbitt of Escape The Fate was the original lead vocalist for The Word Alive.

ATTACK ATTACK!

Attack Attack! was up next, presenting one of the most impassioned, devastating live performances from a metalcore act this reviewer has ever seen. While most bands seem to be going through the motions at this point in their careers, there is a tremendous amount of sincerity and brutality to be found within Attack Attack!’s set. Playing selections from their just unleashed This Means War epic on Rise Records, songs were their artillery and the sonic battle was exhilarating! Tunes such as The Family, The Motivation, and the electronic crowd pleaser Sexual Man Chocolate were fired, resulting in massive pit action. Towards the end of the set, vocalist Caleb Shomo went over to the foot of the stage, and delivered a powerful testimony about feelings of depression and hopelessness of his past – and ultimately achieving perseverance and strength in the process. Shomo let the audience know when all else fails, they could always turn to the band for support. Attack Attack! then exploded into a fiery rendition of The Wretched (not to be confused with a song of the same name by The Word Alive). The absolutely stunning moment was then followed by an older song called Stick Stickly and then The Revolution concluded their segment of the show. If you ever have a chance to catch Attack Attack! live, do whatever you must to make your way to one of their performance. As unforgettable as they are inspiring, expect greater glories for Attack Attack! in the months and years ahead.

ESCAPE THE FATE

“Chose your fate,” was the chant heard over the PA system as Escape The Fate from Las Vegas blasted onto the stage. The notorious band has been through quite a few changes over the years, both with band personnel and musical direction. The fans at the HOB on Sunset exuded a good deal of excitement – and even though it was getting late – the enthusiasm level was at maximum volume. Opening the set with the anthem-like 10 Miles Wide, Escape The Fate delivered a wildly infectious performance that really had the HOB crowd dancing it up and singing along. Highlights in the set included Bad Blood, Day Of Reckoning, You Are So Beautiful, Ashley, and many other fan favorites. The Escape The Fate 2012 lineup definitely packs a wallop, consisting of Craig Mabbitt on lead vocals, Bryan “Monte” Money on lead guitar, Michael Money on rhythm guitar, Thomas “TJ” Bell on bass, and Robert Ortiz on drums. An exciting finale to This World Is Ours Tour here in the City Of Angels. Expect a new Escape The Fate album to arrive in September!

Trek Kicks Off April 5 in Buffalo , NY – Tickets To Go On Sale On Friday, February 10, 2012 at www.thisworldisourstour.com

Two of rock’s most talked about bands, Escape the Fate and Attack Attack!, are joining forces on a co-headliner, dubbed the This World Is Ours Tour. The trek, which features support from The Word Alive, Secrets and Mest, will kick off April 5th in Buffalo , NY and wind down on May 16th in Vancouver , BC .

Currently the best-selling band on Rise Records, Attack Attack! has toured non-stop over the past 4 years, bringing their insane live show to every corner of the world. Last summer found the band headlining the Vans Warped Tour, marking their 3rd time on the tour.

Attack Attack!’s recently released third album, This Means War, landed at #11 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart in its debut week, proving to critics and naysayers alike that the Ohio band is making an impact on music fans. AllMusic.com calls This Means War, “…their hardest hitting and most coherent record to date.” Columbus Alive! describes the record as, “…the sound of Attack Attack! shaking off shackles. Somehow both heavier and poppier, more streamlined yet less boxed-in, it redefines them.” The Knoxville News Sentinel raves, “The death-metal, screamo, heavy-rock act rarely hits the brakes, with machine-gun guitar riffs and screeching vocals by Caleb Shomo swarming and suffocating the mix. There’s also old-fashioned punk fury racing through this polished, modern metal mayhem, and even traces of funk.” Underthegunreview.net says, “This Means War should be acknowledged as a fine album. It’s visceral, urgent, and compelling, powered by a passion and intensity so deep-rooted as to be tangible. (It) easily lives up to its name in ambition and scope – from the outset, it’s determined to set a radical, vociferous agenda and it pushes itself to hitherto unexplored heights. It’s excellently made and a testimony to the band’s growth…”

Escape The Fate are currently in the midst of recording a new album, their second with producer John Feldmann (The Used, D.R.U.G.S.). The Las Vegas quartet has toured relentlessly with everyone from Bullet For My Valentine to Hollywood Undead, and in the process has cultivated a diehard following cementing their status as one of hard rocks most intense live acts.

Nominated for a Kerrang! Music Award in the “Best Album” category, Revolver Magazine described the band’s most recent self-titled release as, “tread(ing) the tightrope between good times and introspection, between rollicking rock, raging post-hardcore, and tender balladry,“ and Outburn Magazine declared it, “a compelling modern day masterpiece.”

In the year 2010, Escape The Fate now finds themselves on a major label, releasing their third album that is simply self-titled. Well there has never been anything simple about Escape The Fate, from the antics of their notorious ex-vocalist to the over the top personalities from the current membership – on and off the stage. The third time is the charm here though, as the new Escape The Fate music stand above anything they have ever recorded.

While the trademark Escape The Fate attitude and super infectious tunes are still apparent, there’s a universal appeal to the songs that should find music fans from many walks of life taking notice. There is plenty to celebrate on what is certainly a solid collection of songs – many which may find their way onto radio airwaves all across the country – if not the world.

After the opening introduction entitled Chose Your Fate, the disc jumps into supersonic high gear with the thrilling sounds of Massacre – instantly showing how wildly diverse and subversive the Escape The Fate musical experience can be. Starting off with growled metal vocalizations and then delving into a rock and roll anthem territory, there’s even a killer breakdown in the middle guaranteed to ignite mosh pits. A raging guitar solo also commences, making this track an explosive beginning to be sure.

Issues is up next – a catchy slab of rock and roll that is already being played on KROQ. Accompanied by a rather spooky video, this tune possesses a ton of hit single potential. Zombie Dance continues on with the haunting pop and roll reveries, complete with a beat that will make you want to tap your toes and shake that booty to lyrics such as, “We’re already dead” and “It’s like a dead masquerade so come and dance with me.”

Gorgeous Nightmare is definitely a standout and sounds like another hit single in the making. Shades of Mötley Crüe abound on this one, featuring a fierce vocal performance by Craig Mabbitt. Even sexier than their signature song Situations, the rockin’ Gorgeous Nightmare is bound to become a crowd favorite when performed live.

“Come on, come on, shake your money maker,” sings Mabbitt in the wild and wonderful City Of Sin, a song that is a rowdy tribute to their hometown. With the playful keyboard interludes, backing gang vocals, and guitar hero sections, City Of Sin will make you want to dive headfirst into the nearest dance floor and party hardy it up big time.

Day Of Wreckoning features intensive vocals and driving rhythms, mixing metal and glam with a fiery vengeance. And then there’s Lost In Darkness, a haunting track that should really affect the gothic, more alienated faction of Escape The Fate fans. The aptly titled Prepare Your Weapons is a mighty blast that should get more than a few heads banging.

The biggest and most glorious surprise on the album is World Around Me – a power ballad featuring a moving vocal by Craig Mabbitt. The entire track is well arranged, with dazzling keyboard work and a wailing guitar solo that is wondrous to behold.

The disc closes on a mesmerizing note with The Aftermath (The Guillotine Part III), featuring progressive axe work, a tighter than hell rhythm section, and infinitely impassioned vocals. A brilliant grand finale showing each member at their very best.

The production of the album is superb, delivered with a skilled precision by Don Gilmore, who has worked magic for bands such as Bullet For My Valentine and Linkin Park. Monte Bryan Money shines like a million dollars on guitar while Max Green on bass and Robert Ortiz on drums are the rhythm section to be reckoned with. And vocalist Craig Mabbitt delivers his finest performance to date on this Escape The Fate record, presenting a passion and diversity that has eclipsed the various projects he has done in the past. A fully realized effort that should thoroughly impress their current fan base and gain the Sin City collective a whole new set of musical converts.

In the horror movie influenced video, the group is being attacked by a small village of people, but things aren’t as they seem. Escape The Fate frontman Craig Mabbitt explains, “Slowly through the video, you begin to realize the town’s people are the ones that are crazy and insane. We’re just a group of four rad dudes playing in a church.”

The P.R. Brown (Stone Sour, Slipknot) directed video’s concept was Mabbitt’s, who wanted a graphic novel type of feel to it. Anyone who has already seen the “Issues” video knows that the band achieved the vocalist’s goal.
