Grayscale at The Echo – Live Review

Collin Walsh of Grayscale at The Echo

Grayscale, The Echo, November 27, 2017

The Echo in Silver Lake hosted the Trophy Eyes North American Tour – a very casual yet packed to the rafters show featuring four up-and-coming bands we’ll be hearing a whole lot more from in 2018. Headliners Trophy Eyes were in top form, commenting that it was surely one of their favorite shows in the Los Angeles area while opening up the microphone for anyone who wanted to crowd surf onstage to sing.

Providing direct support was Free Throw from Nashville, unleashing a superb set of indie pop anthems. Early arrivals would were treated to standout performances from Grayscale and the unsigned Head North. Judging by Head North’s catchy songs and memorable live show, don’t expect to see this band without the support of a record label for long.

Grayscale is definitely one of the most passionate, thoroughly dynamic bands on the pop punk music scene today. Performing a short yet vibrantly effective set at the intimate Echo, Grayscale had the audience enraptured and singing along to each and every song. Showcasing selections from their recently unveiled Adornment entreaty on Fearless Records, the euphoric emotions on display throughout the album achieve an ultra-vivid life when these songs are performed within a live setting. Let It Rain remains an pop rocking anthem for the ages and is a clear crowd favorite. How ironic is was to hear their song Echoes being performed live in L.A. for the very first time at a club named Echo.

Nick Veno of Grayscale at The Echo

One of the vast and glorious highlights was when the band exploded into a triumphant rendition of the poignant Beautiful Things – an absolutely gorgeous song whose heartfelt sentiments are wondrous to behold when performed live. And what an exciting and cathartic conclusion Fever Dream provided, complete with thoroughly impassioned lyrics and spellbinding melodies feeling like nothing short of all-out sonic liberation.

Vocalist Collin Walsh conveys the narration with imagination and flair, easily bringing the audience into the exhilarating Grayscale experience. Dallas Molster and Andrew Kyne shine with their dazzling guitar interludes, while bassist Nick Ventimiglia and drummer Nick Veno present a tight and intensive rhythm section. Judging by their passionate live show and the lively audience response, it won’t be long until Grayscale will be travelling across the country headlining their own shows.  Whether on record or within the hallowed walls of a club show, Grayscale from Philadelphia is a collective ready to change the world with their inspiring tapestries. It will be exciting to see what the New Year for the Grayscale brigade!
