Based near the fledging Denver scene, don’t expect to hear a clone of Drop Dead, Gorgeous or Fear Before when encountering The Summer Soundtrack. Although most have formerly appeared in screamo / metalcore acts, what they’ve found within The Summer Soundtrack is a more lasting form of music. With influences ranging from New Found Glory to Amber Pacific, this new band would be the perfect soundtrack for a drive in the car with the top down or at your next raging party. Here is an interview we conducted with one of the TSS members to find out more about the group, as well as their just released EP entitled This Love. Time to meet The Summer Soundtrack – a band for all seasons and musical tastes…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in The Summer Soundtrack, and how long the band has been together.
Ben Lohle – I do the vocals and i started this band about a year ago with Brandon Ruckman.
What is the current music scene like in Denver, and how does The Summer Soundtrack fit into the scheme of things?
We are actually from Grand Junction, CO but might as well Denver since we all wanna move there, but the music scene here is/was metal screamo stuff…i mean it was fun but we wanted to start something that was completely different from everything else that was going on. I think we can all agree that we fit right into it all. Our music’s cathy, fun and listenable by all ages.
How did everyone in the band meet and what other bands have they been involved with?
I met Brandon and Chase when I was a sophomore in high school. I heard their screamo band was looking for someone and I decided i would try out having zero experience in anything. I rode the bus home with him to band practice, tried out; we’ve been playing music in bands ever since.
What is a live The Summer Soundtrack show like for those of us who have yet to see you play.
Well we like to have a good time and give the audience a performance full of energy. Our music fits the perfect party scene so just have a good time and sing along; you’re at a show.
Is there any story or concept behind the This Love EP title?
Not exactly, we kinda just wrote the songs. They’re all about girls though…haha. Just life experience’s.
How easy or difficult was it to record and release This Love on your own?
Well we all knew what it would take to a degree to make this happen. Every band is different though so it is still a new experience everytime. New challenges and goals we set. We definitely had to buckle down and save a ton!! Which is a monumental thing for kids our age that are in college, no jobs…I’m sure you can relate. But we somehow did it and we are very proud of it!
Who produced This Love and what other bands have they worked with in the past?
Brad Nyght – Desperation Band, Chamberlynn…
Who are some of the bigger bands you have opened for in the past and what was the experience like?
We actually haven’t played with too many big bands yet but we did get to share the stage with acts such as A Cursive Memory, The Dangerous Summer… SO BOOK US if you read this! lol
If you could be a donut, what kind would you be and why?
Chocolate Glaze for sure, or custard filled with chocolate frosting because they’re so delicious!
Is there any chance of The Summer Soundtrack doing a tour or some shows outside of Denver?
Yes, we’ve actually already played out of state. We are just trying to find someone that can help us book since it’s kind of hard not being signed and all.
If there was one thing you’d like a listener to remember the most after hearing your band for the first time, what would it be?
Probably our name and hope they could relate to it and enjoyed it.
Any final words of wisdom?
Check your map when driving at night in Utah! Follow the signs…or you’ll end up getting lost in the desert! No good.
The Summer Soundtrack is Ben Lohle on vocals, Shawn Langley and Brandon Ruckman on guitars, Chase Martinez on bass and ex-Dead Where We Stand / Defending The Pilot member Matt Neiberger on drums.
