In Part Two of our two part Vans Warped Tour preview, Highwire Daze interviews some of the bands taking part in this year’s cross country trek.  So catch up with Chelsea Grin, The Darlings, Dead Sara, Echo Movement, For Today, Rise To Remain, and Super Water Sympathy as they give you a glimpse of what to expect this summer.

Warped is upon us and will be here quicker than you think!  Hope to see you at some of the shows.  Highwire Daze will be covering the Irvine, Ventura, and San Diego dates this year.  And now, the countdown continues…

CHELSEA GRIN

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
My name is Alex Koehler, and I sing for the band Chelsea Grin based out of SLC, Utah.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
This is our first time on Warped tour, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out for us. Ever since we were younger one of our biggest dreams was to be on the full tour, and now we finally get that opportunity. It’s an amazing feeling.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
You can expect us to go out there and leave our hearts on stage every night. We put every ounce of our soul into the music we play, and we love pleasing the crowd.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
We’re releasing a new EP for Warped entitled “EVOLVE“. We decided the name fit perfectly with the new sound and feel we brought to this album. We’ve all grown so much as musicians over the years and “evolved” so to speak.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
You can expect to hear My Damnation and Lilith for sure. My Damnation was the single off our last album. The lyrics tell a story about being damned to hell, and the horrors that come along with it. Lilith is more a long the lines of a demonic love song. We wanted to have a song people could relate to emotionally, but still have our evil twist to it.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
I am personally not a morning person whatsoever, but we’re still going to love playing no matter what time of day it is. We’ll be going through quite a bit of Monster energy drinks for sure haha.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Strange and unusual seems to be the theme to every single tour we do, so nothing really surprises me anymore. I’m desensitized to any and all weirdness.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
I’d just like to say that it’s going to be a hell of a tour, and I know if you come you’re going to end up having a blast. Guaranteed.

THE DARLINGS – PART ONE

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
Buddy Darling singer and guitar. Based out of Redondo Beach and Orange County .

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
Looking forward to rocking out and hopefully not fainting on stage from heat exhaustion haha. Most importantly getting our music out to this younger generation and giving them a taste of rootsy hard rock. I think this will be our 4th time doing warped.

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Eat your wheaties… Especially if you’re in a van.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Darlings are slaves to the music, we go bat shit crazy on stage. Think “Gladiators”.  Hopefully no hospital visits…

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our latest album is “The New Escape” themed around old magician escape artist imagery and that music is our best escape from the hardships of life.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
These Wings” is my personal favorite as far as lyrics. It’s about the huge oil spill that happened in the gulf a little while back that affected my home town in the South.

Headhunter” is a story of man who doesn’t want to spend his golden years as an outlaw, but he finds that no one gets out alive. -I really wanna do a video for this one..

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Damn I forgot about that.. Well sometimes it’s actually better to play early when the kids are fresh and excited, especially when you’re a newer band like ourselves.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Well we’ve been put up in some crazy haunted hotels before by promoters, that was fun haha. We broke our way into the haunted underground pool at the Milwaukee Rave venue, got drunk and jammed some acoustic songs in there. We’ve been almost killed in Canada on some deadly hwy we were warned not travel through the night. Semi’s, fog, black ice, moose crossing, avalanche warnings, hail.. Finally we just pulled over and tried to sleep.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Yes look for The Darlings on “Kevin Says” stage and come hang with us at our merch tent!!!

THE DARLINGS – PART TWO

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
Whats up! My names Chris Kranes and I play bass guitar/back-up vox for the band The Darlings.  I’ve also been known to play a mean kazoo. Were based out of LA/OC,…Southern Cali.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
We are mainly looking forward to 8 hour night drives and catching athletes foot in the public showers haha, nah we’re looking forward to networking and meeting all the other great bands and people on the tour. This is actually our 4th year on warped, this ain’t our first rodeo cowboy!

If this is not your first time on Warped Tour, what advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
Bring Xanax and sunscreen, or you’ll die of sleep deprivation and sunburn!

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
One could expect a high energy, timeless rock n roll vibe from our live show. Off stage we are complete losers and you would probably never even expect us to rock : /

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our new LP is called “The New Escape“, it was kinda a metaphor of how music is an escape from all the stale things in our daily life like bosses, traffic, cops, things like that.  We thought it suited the album and emotion we were going for

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
Definitely “Fight Alone” and “Broken Heart still Beating“. Fight alone is kind of an anti conformist type song that rebels against strength in numbers and the sheep state of mind, while Broken Heart is more of a straigt forward song about relationships and how they can leave you cold and jaded.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Those infamous 11:30 slots means you can get 3 sheets to the wind drunk way earlier and harass people all day at the merch tent haha

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Between the illegal fire works we buy and all the toothless truckers on the road there’s never a moment that’s not unusual

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
YES!, make sure to check out The Darlings at thedarlingsmusic.com and come say whats up to us at our merch tent. SEE YA!!!

DEAD SARA

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
I’m Emily Armstrong, I sing and play 2nd guitar.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
This is our first time. I’m just looking forward to seeing what it’s like and the experience. There is a lot that goes on from what I hear.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Lively, raw, energetic rock.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
There is none,  It’s self titled. We just thought as our first record it would be most appropriate.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
For sure our single “Weatherman“, which was the first song that we all starting writing in the rehearsal as this lineup.

And “Face to Face“, which was inspired from a couple of friends of mine who went through a break up and I felt I was the one they both went to lean on. So hearing both of their stories and trying to help put me in this like awkward position.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
I guess we’ll have to have lots of espresso shots!

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
I remember this lady passed out in her car, seat belt on and all in the middle of a street in Austin. We ran over to her with some hesitation as soon as we pulled over thinking she could may be unconscious or even dead. We knocked on the window and it startled her so bad, she had no idea what was going on. We told her to pull over and discovered she was so drunk and decided to take a snooze in the middle of the road.

ECHO MOVEMENT

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
DAVE: Hello, I am keyboards and primary writer.
STEPHEN: Hello, I am lead vocals and band leader. Dave and I are brothers and live in New Jersey.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
DAVE: We played a couple of dates on VWT in 2009 and again in 2010. We’re happy to be back, this time for the whole thing!
STEPHEN: I think I am looking forward to hanging out with the awesome people that come to support us. We typically have an all-day hang-out at our merch tent.

What advice would you give a band about to attempt Warped for the first time?
STEPHEN: If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything, so get as much rest as you can, eat right, and stay active and stretched. Make sure your set is flexible and the band is well-rehearsed. Promote before and during the tour dates. Take the time to meet your fans and be respectful to the tour staff! I could go on for a while so…

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
STEPHEN: Elephants. No, I’m just kidding. It would be cool if we had elephants though.

What is the name of your upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
DAVE: Our new album drops on September 4 and is called Love and the Human Outreach. The album was largely inspired by Carl Sagan, Buckminster Fuller, Terence McKenna, as well as the worlds of astrophysics and quantum mechanics. The credit for this album, and so much more, lies with the critical thinkers and doers on behalf of humanity’s well being.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
DAVE: “Music Played On” is based on solipsism, which is a philosophical dilemma (of sorts) that basically shows it’s impossible to prove anyone exists except for yourself.”I Think God Smokes Weed” is always a fun song to play live. Regardless of its face value, the lyrics are about how we are the products of nature, and *all* earthly resources are inextricably woven into the fabric of humanity. It has nothing to do with “believing” in a god- I don’t even subscribe to a deity.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
STEPHEN: Haha, we have played the first slot once before. It turned out fine though, people were rushing in. We are ready for whatever comes our way!

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
STEPHEN: Every day is an adventure in a new land, so I guess it is always strange and unusual.
DAVE: We honestly can’t tell a lot of stories because they’re incriminating. But I can tell one family-friendly tale of narrow escape. Our story begins in the magical land that time forgot, near the Wyoming-Colorado border. Our generator seized, and without it, we didn’t have air conditioning- a crucial component for eight dudes on a small bus. We found a used generator on craigslist that wasn’t too far off our tour path, and after a few jagged emails, we were bouncing down an unpaved road through the desert to check this thing out. We eventually found a dusty ranch house and drove around to the backyard. It looked like a disassembled set from an old western film.

The seller was a lanky tweaker in his mid 40s, complete with long greasy hair, a Metallica shirt half-tucked into skinny jeans, and the skinny jeans tucked into cowboy boots. He talked like a bad impression of Jim Breuer, but with more animated mumblings about engines and drug habits.

We decided to make him an offer slightly below his asking price, and that’s when things turned a bit ugly. It was like throwing water on the witch. We kind of kept our heads down as his emotions melted into unfamiliar forms. We didn’t realize it at the time, but we were witnessing a total mental crash, which surfaced as a series of childish whines and pacing in an erratic loop. He even ran into his house a few times, and I remember thinking, “holy shit, this guy’s going to run back out here wielding a gun.” I’m pretty sure we were all thinking of different ways we could take the weird bastard out, if we had to.

His emotions eventually ran their course and settled near acceptance. We made the trade, loaded the generator and yelled goodbye from a safe distance. I stayed outside the bus to help navigate through his yard of ditches and ragweed. I couldn’t help but feel, at that very moment, that my head was framed in the crosshairs of a long-range riffle pointed through his kitchen window. If it was, he never pulled, and I thank him for that. We escaped back to the paved roads toward Denver. The things we do for air conditioning…

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
DAVE & STEPHEN: come and say hi!

FOR TODAY

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
Hello, my name is Ryan Leitru and I play guitar in the Sioux City, Iowa based metal band “For Today

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
This is our first time on Warped tour so we are all looking forward to the opportunities that doing a tour like Warped brings. Obviously the large demographics of people that attend the festival lends a great opportunity for us to potentially share what we do musically and who we are as people to a whole new audience.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Our band has always made an effort to really be transparent and real as to who we are and what we are about. So if you see us live you can expect a passionate and honest set played by people that love what we do. I think that sincerity is a lost quality in an industry that seems to come down to dollars and cents. We can only hope that when people see our band they are getting something real and authentic.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our new record “Immortal” will be in stores just before Warped starts as it comes out May 29th. The whole record is about the fact that even though time passes and cultures shift, the gospel of Jesus remains the same. Even though people have done terrible things in the name of it and people have messed it up, the core is still that there is hope, forgiveness, and restoration in the name of Jesus. So that even though this band, genre and music will some day pass and fade away. The heart behind the band will remain “Immortal“.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
We are playing a song off the new record called “Fearless“. The general meaning of the song is that in a world that we are taught to constantly live in fear of what could happen to us or what the future holds, we don’t have to live that way if we know who God made us to be and know that whatever trails may come we are not alone.

We will also be playing a song called “Devastator“. This song is a taunt to the powers of Hell in our lives.  Sickness, depression, anxiety, etc. All of these things have no place in the lives of Gods people. This song is about breaking off those things in our generation and empowering people to know that they weren’t intended to live that way.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Well obviously no one wants to wake up early to play but to be honest we are so happy to be on the tour that any minor inconveniences like playing early are worth it. We are so thankful and blessed to be a part of the tour and we can’t wait to get it underway.

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
Well we have been touring for the past 5 years of our lives so like anyone’s life there is too many things to summarize it in one event. But we have been all over the world, played packed shows, played empty shows, met amazing people, grown as friends and brothers, been there for each other during hard times, and been there for great times (weddings, children, etc). So I would just say that I never thought we would be in the place we are in and its strange to me that we have been fortunate enough to have our metal band from the middle of nowhere in Sioux City, IA take us where we are now. It blows my mind.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
We hope to see you and get a chance to chat with you at this year’s Warped Tour. Stay hydrated and have a great time!

RISE TO REMAIN

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
I’m Austin, I am the vocalist and we are based out of London, England.

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
It’s our first time on the Warped Tour, which is super special, and it’s also our first time touring the states. There’s quite a couple bands that we know on it this year, and tons that we don’t, so I’m really
looking forward to watching them and just having a few beers with some friends.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
Electricity, power, energy. We put our all in to the show, so come watch five dudes freak the fuck out.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
It is called City Of Vultures, and the title was inspired by the predatory and selfish nature that we can experience as humans.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
Power Through Fear” and “The Serpent“. “Power Through Fear” was inspired by the “illuminations” that we as a society create to ourselves to frighten us into submission. “The Serpent” is about the psyche of
greed that we are all capable of, it’s a bit of a throwback to the serpent in the Adam and Eve story, but doesn’t draw heavily from it.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
It’s going to be brutal, but we did one show in Switzerland at 8:30 pm, and had to drive to Italy to play a show at 9:45 am the following morning. Let’s see how we hack this!

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
We’ve had van break downs, fights, gear has broken, we’ve had fans try to break barriers and dressing rooms. But to go into detail would be telling!

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
Come check us out, have some fun and bring some beers! Hope you have a great Warped Tour guys. See you around.

SUPER WATER SYMPATHY

Introduce yourself, what you do in the band, and where you are based out of?
Helloo, I am Billy Hargrove, the bass player for Super Water Sympathy from Shreveport, Louisiana!

What are you looking forward to the most about Warped Tour and is this your first time on the tour?
Interested in seeing what kind of food everyone likes to eat, and yes this is our first time on this tour.

What could one expect from your live show at Warped Tour?
The audience will feel like they are floating in Beta Centauri.

What is the name of your latest or upcoming CD or EP and what inspired the title?
Our latest album name is Vesper Belle. It was inspired by our lead singer, Ansley. She is a reincarnation of the evening girl.

Select two songs you may be playing in your set and what inspired the lyrics.
Cherokee – is about technology versus nature and the correlation of history, space, and time and making the native americans the trigger point. It also focuses those ideas for longing for the past by intertwining a past relationship that symbolizes vengeance.

Slade Was Made – was inspired by the bands’ best fan, Slade Walker, and describes his inception in St. Lucia and the life of his ancestors though the Lesser Antilles.

How are you going to feel about playing those infamous 11:30 AM Warped Tour slots?
Cannot wait! Just lucky to be there, no complaints. Just have to drink some more Super Water after the show…

Any strange or unusual happening in the past while out on the road?
While on our “West Coast Tour”, we saw different types of shadow beings in the red woods.

Do you have any messages for Warped Tour attendees this year?
The Odyssey and the Sirens is an attempt to lure sailors into their subterfuge. Together they make an analogy into modern day relationships and the correlation of surrendering yourself to an ethereal trend that is deafeningly powerful.
