Since their inception just over a year ago, Westland from Boston has consistently been on the road, performing anywhere and everywhere while making a good number of fans along the way. If there was ever an illustration in the dictionary attached to the term DIY, Westland may very well find their picture alongside the definition. Their self-released album Don’t Take It Personal should find a personal place in the collections of all who like melodic punk bands such as The Starting Line, Amber Pacific, and even Blink 182. Now on the road with Rookie Of The Year and Scarlet Grey, we decided to get up close and personal with the Westland crew to find out more about this fun rock and roll collective…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Westland, and how long the band has been together.
We have been together for one year.
Where is the band based out of and what is your local music scene like there?
Westland is based out of Boston. As soon as we formed we hit the road, and never looked back. We’ve been a band a year, and we managed to basiclly stay on the road the whole time. We wish we had played the Boston scene more, but our bigger fan base seems to be in Cali beacuase we tour so much!
How easy or difficult was it to put out Don’t Take It Personal pretty much on your own?
It has been by no means easy. We already sold over 7,000 units on our own, which we are pretty proud of. Recently our CD has been released in a large amount of Hot Topic stores! Make sure you go pick it up!! You can also pick it up on Itunes, amazon.com, napster, etc.
Who were some of the people you worked with in the recording and mixing of the CD and how did they become involved with the process?
We recorded it at Steve Gillis’s (drummer of Filter) studio in Chicago with Evan Bakke (Quiet Drive) producing it. It was awesome to work with them! After that, Mark Trombino offered to mix it. We were stoked being that he had done some of our favorite bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Blink 182, and Something Corporate, also Vlado Meller (AFI, We the Kings, Mettallica) mastered the album.
Where did you get the ideas for some of the lyrics. Please cite two songs from the CD and what the lyrics are about.
Save This – “Is about missing home, and looking back on my life with old friends in Allentown, PA” – Aaron Bonus
I’ll Pray For You – ” It’s about my ex girlfirend who didn’t believe in prayer” – Aaron Bonus
How did your recent shows in the Los Angeles/OC area go?
It went very well actually! We had a lot of kids come out which made it a very successfull show! Its always awesome to see everyone singing the words.
Do you have any future shows scheduled for the Los Angeles area?
We sure do! September 9th at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood CA! The show is with Rookie Of The Year, Scarlet Grey and IT Boys.
What has been the best and worst part about being on the road and consistently touring?
The best part is meeting all the new friends and fans while seeing the country! The worst is missing your friends and family from back home.
What advice would you give a young band about to go on the road for the very first time?
NEVER EVER EVER Give up and go home! Your first tour will always be rough, but stick with it, and good things will happen. Don’t be afraid to go to a shopping mall or show and hustle your CD when you are low on cash! We were basicly eating crackers everyday, but we stuck through it!
What could one expect from a live Westland show?
Tons of energy and sweat. All of our fans pretty much run around as much as we do, so its awesome that everone is having as much fun as us!
If you could be a donut, what kind would you be and why?
Jelly cuz they are delicious like us.
Who are some of the bigger bands you have opened for in the past and what was the experience like?
Well this upcoming tour which starts August 27th, will be our first club tour. Up untill now we have been touring high schools and promoting the crap out of our record. We will be touring with Rookie of the Year, The IT Boys, and Scarlet Grey. We are excited to get back on the road and play some shows!
Do you have any messages for people reading this who might want to check your band out for the very first time?
If you get our CD, expect the music/show to be twice as good live! We love to meet our fans so come see us!
WESTLAND will be at The Roxy in West Hollywood on September 9th!!!
