Based out of the UK, While She Sleeps is beginning to make waves across the Atlantic and beyond with their impassioned brand of metallic hardcore. Their recent collection of tunes entitled The North Stands For Nothing has been released stateside on Good Fight Music, and there’s even talk of a US tour for 2011. The band has opened for a wide range of bands in their home base, playing well over 300 shows since their inception. We caught up with one of the members to find out more about this dynamic entity destined to leave a lasting impression on all who venture out to give a listen….
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in While She Sleeps, and how long the band has been together.
I’m Lawrence Taylor and I’m the lead voice of While She Sleeps. The band has been together about 5 years now, but I’m the newest member joining just under a year ago.
Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are from Sheffield, United Kingdom. There is a strong alternative music scene where we are from & therefore the support we receive is awesome. As for local bands, there’s most definitely a couple worth a mention. The first being Malevolence, this band have been sticking at it for years and are still mega young. Definitely worth watching for in the future! Never Cry Wolf deserve a mention also. Good local friends of ours, just a young bunch of dudes keeping the local scene alive.
Being from the UK, how do you wind up being signed to Good Fight?
This summer we joined the Artery Foundation for management. They then spread the word about us in the States & we promptly heard back from GoodFight. Needless to say we were stoked, they are a strong, established company and something we’re definitely proud to be a part of.
Is there any story or concept behind the CD title The North Stands For Nothing? Seems like a bold title.
The album title is a strong reflection of one of the main messages that we strive to promote within the industry, and with our fanbase as a whole. There is enough corruption existing within and surrounding the music industry, so the fact that people often prejudge a band based upon where they are from is quite simply bullshit. In the UK over the past few years, the band has witnessed crowds watch ‘their mates band’ and afterwards fuck off from a show, not even giving the supporting bands a chance, or often even the headlining act. There are just too many underage, contrived ‘music journalists’ out there these days who hate bands simply because ‘its cool to hate them’, who just have a lack of respect for often very talented musicians, just trying to do what they do. As a band we have always done our utmost to watch every band possible and give respect and support where its due.
Where do you get your ideas for some of your lyrics? Please cite two songs in particular and what they are about?
As the voice of Sleeps, I would say we write about things we have experienced, and the issues that surround us and directly affect us not only as a band, but as individuals. Its all raw honesty, straight from the heart. We have a lot of passion behind our music.
The Truth (track 7) – This song highlights my childhood in-particular, and the experiences I have from a certain time. It is predominantly about what a fucking hero my mother is to me, a tribute to her, and to parents in general for the sacrifices they make.
Hearts Aside our Horses (track 8 ) – This track was written for all grandparents, we are a very family oriented bunch of dudes! Its basically about the influences they had on us as youngsters, and how much they are missed.
What could one expect from a live While She Sleeps show?
Energy, water, passion and beer.
Is there any chance of your band coming over to the States for some touring in the New Year?
We are aiming to sort a tour to the states for next year. As soon as physically possible, we’ll be there. Most members of the band had never been out of the country before tour, never mind to the US, so we would fucking love to go!
Who are some of the bigger bands you have opened for in the UK and what was the experience like?
Ghost of a Thousand
The Ghost Inside
Playing with acts like these gives us the inspiration and the hunger to carrying on doing what we do and take the band as far as possible.
The Queen Of England invites While She Sleeps to perform one song for her and an audience at a Royal Command Performance. What song would you do for the Queen and why?
I fought the law and the law won. To be honest, we feel the country is a bit of a mess!
Which member of While She Sleeps is most likely to quit the band and launch a political campaign to become a member of Parliament?
We’ve all got a bit of an issue with the Government really. While we would probably not actively take part in a protest we all have strong opinions & views on the way our country is run. Not all too positive to say the least! Watch Zeitgeist.
What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most after hearing your music for the very first time?
Our honesty and passion. If they can understand & interpret the message that we are trying to push, that’s all we can ask.
Any final words of wisdom?
Listen to our album, come to a show, ask us whats up. As for words of wisdom, do what you love and live with no regrets. That’s the way we’re running shit.
