Camisado – The Highwire Daze Legacy Interviews

(Editor Ken’s Note in 2021 – Just rediscovered Camisado after doing an interview with Orion Stephens of In Dying Arms here in 2021. Orion did a guest appearance on the Camisado magnum opus Faceless, a band I actually covered when their album first came out in 2012.  In Dying Arms is now back together and the entire Camasado discography is now back on Spotify, including I Am Alive Tonight featuring guest vocalist Orion Stephens from the album Faceless.  Let’s revisit Camasado during their Faceless era here at The Highwire Daze Legacy Interviews...)

Camisado: Empowering the Faceless

(Orginally posted: 12/18/2012)

Camisado is a five-piece post-metalcore band from Baltimore, MD, whose empowering music has been gaining a good deal of attention within their hometown and well beyond. Currently on the road with Truth And Its Burden promoting their compelling new release Faceless, Camisado’s dynamic songs and memorable live shows are sure to enrapture metalcore and deathcore fans all across the nation. Here is an interview Highwire Daze Online conducted with vocalist Joe Deak

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Camisado, and how long the band has been together.
My name is Joe and I sing for the band Camisado. The band has been officially together since 9/9/08.

Where is your band based out of and what is the local music scene like there? Which bands could you recommend from your area?
We are based out of Baltimore, MD. The scene in our area seems to finally be getting better. A lot of the promoters in the area know what they are doing and know how to be friendly while still handing the tough business of being a promoter. The crowds seem to be getting larger as there are more and more great up and comers from MD. The two most notable are I, The Breather and our brother band In Dying Arms. A few other noteworthy bands that are starting to hit the MD scene are Between The Heart And The Home, I Am Intention and For Fear Itself.

Is there any story or concept behind the CD title Faceless?
The meaning behind Faceless roots to a lot of how we feel as a band. I think a lot of people feel like they are overlooked, or not like anyone else and they feel faceless. We named the album Faceless as a challenge to ourselves and others to change that and to put a face on the faceless. To follow your dreams and embrace that you aren’t like anyone else.

Select any two Camisado songs and what inspired the lyrics.
Let It Burn is inspired by the idea of following your dreams. It’s about having passion in what you do and taking it head on.

I Am Alive Tonight was inspired by the idea of living for the moment. It’s about living every day like it is your last. Not necessarily without care, but without fear of failure or rejection. At the end of the day it your life and you won’t be coming back to it

What was it like working with Will Puttney and what did he contribute to the overall recording process?
Well for our EP “Pulse” we recorded with Will Putney and our most recent full length release “Faceless” we went to Andrew Baylis from Life On Repeat. Both producers were amazing to work with. Will really pushed our limits to make us even better. And Andrew really helped us capture the sound we’ve been looking for. So both of those cases were very tough, but we were beyond satisfied with the outcome.

What are you looking forward to the most about your upcoming tour with Truth And Its Burden?
Well we are already a little bit into it but so far my favorite part about it has been the fact that all three bands touring (Mercia included) are very different, yet we are all there supporting each other. Everyone on the tour have all become pretty good friends and I think that’s an awesome thing. When you have bands who may not usually listen to each other supporting each other, it doesn’t get much better.

What could one expect from a live Camisado show?
We make it a point to make sure that our stage show is memorable. You can expect a high energy atmosphere and an overall entertaining experience.

What was your experience playing the Warped Tour like and how many dates did you play?
We played one date in Camden, NJ which was amazing. We were lucky enough to have a date that wasn’t hot at all which seemed to be this years theme. It was an amazing day though. We got to meet a lot of fans and make some new friends and fans. Warped Tour is one of those things that playing the actual show isn’t the only high point of the day. There are always things to get into.

What made you decide to do a cover of My Love and has Justin Timberlake heard or commented on it?
We wanted to do a song that wasn’t a “temporary hit”. A lot of bands do really awesome covers that, just like the original, die of after the novelty of the new release. We wants to pick a song that was and always will be a hit when you play it. We also recently finally decided on a new cover to do that we are stoked on. But no, we haven’t gotten any feedback from JT though I’m curious as to what he would have to say.

Where did you get the name of the band and is there any particular meaning behind it?
Well we had a few other band names before that, and we just wanted a cool one word band name. So we just came across the word Camisado and checked out the meaning and thought it was cool. The word actually means a sneak attack at night.

How easy or difficult has it been to pretty much release Faceless on your own?
I honestly don’t really have anything else to compare it to, so it’s really then only way we know. We’ve been a very DIY band. Paying for everything out of pocket is always tough, but it’s part of the game and is necessary if you want to make it.

Any label interest at the moment?
We are speaking with a few different labels and management companies checking out which would be the best option for us to bring it to that next level we are trying to reach.

What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most after hearing your music for the very first time?
I’d want them to remember that the music we play is driven by passion and thought. It’s not just a “formula” sound that we are trying to regurgitate. It’s something we’ve put thought behind. In the end we try to write our own favorite songs.

Any final words of wisdom?
Don’t ever feel like you can’t succeed on your dreams. It’s up to you whether they come true or not. If you don’t succeed on your dreams then you may not have wanted it enough. Don’t lose yourself along the way and be a face of the faceless.

Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions!
Anytime! Thanks a lot for speaking with us!
