Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in A Promise To Forget, and how long the band has been together.
Hi! I’m John Fleetwood, I play drums in A Promise To Forget and I’m also one of the main songwriters for the band. We’ve been together for coming up to 5 years!

Where is the band based out of and what is the music scene like there?
We’re from Birmingham, UK! Very well known for being the home of metal. So as you can expect the place is full of Metal bands ranging from the likes of us to Death Metal and Deathcore outfits. The Hardcore scene is absolutely booming at the moment, its something the scene should be very proud of.

Is there any overall story or concept behind the title Dying To Live?
We wanting to deal with some topics of depression and anxiety themes. The title of ‘Dying To Live’ come from a brainstorm of different terms we trying to umbrella the different topics under. It was almost called “Momento Mori” which is a latin phrase relating to the reflection on mortality, but we chose Dying To Live as it ended on a more positive note.

Select any two songs from Dying To Live and what inspired the lyrics.
“Sylvia” was written about my grandma. She died just before I was born but was an artist in every sense of the word and tried to push all forms of art out in her life. Everyone says that I look like her, sound like her, talk like her, and that I get my talents from her. It’s a weird sensation so the song is about that, being able to give thinks to those that have been lost as well as the hope that they are proud of you.

What could one expect from a live A Promise To Forget show?
Sweat sweat and more sweat! We’re an energetic bunch and a very loud bunch. We think there’s a lot of very boring tropes which bands pull nowadays because of how they feel it needs to be done. We strive against that and try and get a new show the way we think it can be done. We spend a lot of time working on our show to make it as consistent and fun as possible. We’ve just started using our own light show as well which we helps people engross in the show a little more.

Has A Promise To Forget ever played in States or plan to do so in future days?
We would absolutely love to. A lot of us have been to the States and we love it, and we know we have a lot of fans over there so its a staple want for the future. The problem however is the current climate with working VISA’s and the such, we’ve seen so many friends bands and the such be absolutely destroyed by VISA’s not coming through so it’s very scary.

What was it like opening for the Oceans Ate Alaska and We Came As Romans and did you get to meet or hang out with them at all?
We actually group around most of the members of Oceans Ate Alaska. Chris and Jibbs went to our High School so we knew of them and were around them a lot, we saw a lot of their first shows and have supported them when they were so small and fairly recently after being signed to Fearless Records. They’re awesome guys and it’s great to see a Birmingham band doing so well.

We Came As Romans were the opposite, we have been influenced by them and loved them for years even at the birth of the band. To be able to be given the opportunity to support them was absolutely incredible and so much fun. They were all so kind and gave us some awesome advice for the future. We would love to play with them again.

If A Promise To Forget could open up for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Our bands name is a reference to the Framing Hanley album “A Promise To Burn” so we’d be lying if we said anyone other than Framing Hanley. We were absolutely heartbroken to learn that they had broken up and did all we could to be able to play with them in their final shows however it was out of our hands. We would love to be able to play with them, one last time.

The Queen of Engand invites A Promise To Forget to play one song for her at a Royal Command Performance. What song would you do for Her Majesty and guest and why?
“Courage” as it the lyrics were based on the aftermath of War. Our vocalist Tim had the lyrics for a while and was very dedicated to making it that kind of anthem. It would be a fitting tribute to lost ones in the British Army during Wars as well as troops still serving.

What’s up next for A Promise To Forget?
We’re looking to tour our butts off for the foreseeable future and try and push our album to all four corners of the globe. We’re hitting Europe super soon and much more soon after!
