Frozen Land: The Next Great Chapter In Symphonic Power Metal
The mighty Frozen Land present upon the world the next great and glorious chapter of symphonic power metal! Based out of Finland where classic acts such as Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius reign supreme, Frozen Land recently issued their debut magnum opus via Massacre Records worldwide. Highwire Daze Online recently caught up with guitarist Tuomas Hirvonen to find out more about the heroic sonnets of Frozen Land, their cooperation with Massacre Records, and how even the most majestic of songs are created while driving on the way to your day job! Read on…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Frozen Land, and how long the band has been together.
I created the Facebook page in May 2017 in order to promo our band. At the time it was only me and Tony, a YouTube find singer from Italy. We released one song and that one song got us several offers from record labels so I thought it might be wise to do a whole record. It took about half a year to do album worth of material (while driving to work in my car, I just hummed the songs in my cell phone, haha) and then we started the recordings.
Where is Frozen Land based out and what is your music scene like there?
You might say that we are based in Tampere, Finland, but all of the members live in different cities. Finland is still a good country for metal music but I feel the scene is getting kind of old. We have big names like Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius here, but they wont fit in they leather pants anymore, man! Only kidding, love those guys, but at the same time I’m worried at where the next generation is going to be. Everybody’s into rap and that’s been going on for + 10 years. They might be hitting something we aren’t in metal, I don’t know. Personally I need over driven guitars, fast vocals and big drums.
How did you wind up signing with Massacre Records?
We just sent them the album and Thomas was so good as to offer us a deal.
Select two songs from the Frozen Land album and what inspired the lyrics.
Losers game – Basically tells the story of me waiting for 10 years before making this album. I could have just gotten up and wrote the songs anytime. Still didn’t do it, why is that? One day I decide I’ll fucking do this and 4 months later I have 9 songs ready. So the song is about “if you want something, just do it man, don’t let nothing stop you.” Kind of general
The Fall – is all about my emotions at the time I was doing the record. Actually all music and lyrics are done by me on my way to work, in a car. Haha. You should hear the demos 😉 But that song is about “whats my purpose in life” and following your dream. I think deep inside we all know what we would like to do in life, but its sometimes very hard to follow that vision. You may be to old, too young, too lazy, anything really. “The fall” is to believe in that shit and not making your own way.
What made you decide to cover Angel Crying by E-Type and has anyone from E-Type heard or commented on it?
They had great style in the 90s! Big bangs and all. Huge bass. Enormous aspects. I tried to send it to Martin Erikson, but couldn’t reach him. His management said just that go ahead, cover it. If you reading this Martin, call me, lets grab a lunch!
Who did the cover art for Frozen Land and how much input did you have on it?
That was Andrey Vasilenko. Great artist. I just told him the frame and he did different sketches. Maybe next time we do it more Manowar-style. Bigger muscles, more women.
Who produced Frozen Land and what was it like working with them?
I produced it myself. Next time I maybe wont, it takes a lot of time to be a part of everything.
What could one expect from a live Frozen Land show?
Fabio Lione and Joey DiMaio in the audience holding hands crying “this is so good…”
If Frozen Land could open for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Sonata Arctica. New dog could maybe get the old dog a little more viral.
What is your favorite beer of choice and why?
Hahaha, everything goes baby! German and Czech beer in general.
What’s up next for Frozen Land?
We should be in tour with a big metal name in two weeks but things got screwed up. Nothing we could do ourselves… Hopefully some gigs and if the album sells any copies maybe even another album. Problem is there’s too much music out there, nobody gives a shit. Except you guys! You rock…
Any final words of wisdom?
I’ll search the wisdom at the bottom of the beer glass.
