Getting To Know Electric Revival
Getting To Know Electric Revival
I had the opportunity to sit down and get to know Electric Revival. The band consists of Andreas – lead singer, Warholy (Daniel) – Bassist/backup singer, Lisa – keyboardist, and Jeremy – drums. Go check out their interview with me down below.
Band Formation & Background
What’s the story behind the name of your band?
We had gotten tired of our previous band name ‘Burn Down Hollywood’, and were bouncing suggestions back and forth between the members. Andreas came up with a suggestion that had the word “Revival” in it, and then Lisa suggested “Electric Revival”. Andreas, and our former bassist, both liked the suggestion, and we all decided to go with that name. Lisa thought of the name after thinking that we were trying to bring back/popularize electric guitar driven music again.
Who are the main songwriters, and what influences your songwriting process?
Andreas is our main songwriter. He tends to draw influences from his real-life experiences. Taste The Riches was written after Andreas had to deal with a micromanaging employer that unjustly fired him. Pirate Brother was a love letter written to his hero Johnny Depp after the abuse allegations. City of Angels was written about the musicians, actors and other drug addicted nepo baby “artists” that he has met at all the different venues in LA. One of our unreleased songs, Crow of Enlightenment, deals with the subject of Native American rights and Andreas’ admiration for their culture. Another unreleased track, Coming Home, was a way for Andreas to deal with his fear of death (which is something a lot of people deal with). These are just some of the things that have influenced Electric Revival songs.
Music Style & Inspiration
What are some of your musical influences, and how do they shape your style?
Warholy: Personally, it mostly comes from John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), but it also comes from bassists from funk, old r’n’b and soul tracks from the 60s and 70s.
Lisa: For me it comes from a background in classical piano from a young age, along with a love for ragtime (I’m a huge fan of Scott Joplin). With Electric Revival, I try to approach the keys from a Jon Lord (Deep Purple) and Christine McVie (Fleetwood Mac) vein.
Andreas: The way I approach my vocals is usually by writing the melodies on guitar before I start attempting to come up with words. My vocal style is inspired by people like Glenn Hughes, Myles Kennedy, Chris Stapleton, Robert Plant and Axl Rose. My guitar playing was early on inspired by Slash (Guns N’ Roses), Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin). Nowadays I find myself being inspired by players like Chris Buck, Albert King, Ritchie Blackmore and more.
Jeremy: In my early years of drumming, I was very much influenced by a lot of the big-name drummers like Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Chad Smith, Neil Peart. Nowadays, I’ve gotten a lot more into jazz fusion players, especially the modern guys. For Electric Revival, I’m definitely leaning more into the rock style, but I like to blend the jazz fusion stuff in there when I can (and when I think Andreas isn’t listening).
How do you balance blending different musical genres while staying true to your identity?
Warholy is a professional tightrope walker in the circus. No, but seriously,… We have taken inspiration from how Led Zeppelin managed to incorporate different genres into their style. Our music is mainly hard rock, but we do bring in inspiration from other genres into the music as well.
Creative Process & Recording
What’s been your most memorable recording experience so far?
When we went into the studio with Matt Norman at Electric Sun Studios back in August of 2023, recording drum tracks for future releases.
Band Dynamics
What’s the best part of working with each other, and what makes your band unique?
Lisa: Super Smash Bros nights! The chemistry between the members, and the humorous banter between us all. We tend to roast each other (playfully) during rehearsals, and the group chat messages. Playing music together on stage, and seeing the audience’s reaction. Also getting to hang with our friends that come to the shows! It feels like a big reunion and making a community!
Daniel: The others putting up with my bullshit and smartass-ery.
Is there a specific moment when you realized you had something special together as a band?
When we look into each other’s eyes on stage with the beauty of the stage lights hitting each other’s faces, as we smile gently at each other. We are all in a big band-mance
Live Performances & Touring
What do you want people to feel when they see your live performances?
Andreas: For people to feel connected with the lyrics of the songs, enjoying themselves and being in the moment with us!
Jeremy: I would say our goal is for people to just have fun, be in the moment, forget about whatever bullshit is going on in their life.
Future & Aspirations
Are there any artists or bands you’d love to collaborate with in the future?
Warholy: Opening for Captain Geech & The Shrimp Shack Shooters. Or maybe the Foo Fighters.
Andreas: I would love to open for Dirty Honey, The Band Feel, Glenn Hughes, Black Crowes, Slash, and/or Greta Van Fleet (though Warholy does not approve of the last one).
Lisa: I would love to open for The Rolling Stones or Dirty Honey.
Jeremy: I’m a big fan of the bands PUP, Turnstile, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Paramore, so getting to work with any of them within any capacity would be incredible.
If you could perform on any major festival stage, which one would it be?
Warholy: I’d like to play at the Festival of Books.
Andreas: I would love to play at Glastonbury in the UK, or Sweden Rock Festival.
Lisa: I’d also like to play at the Sweden Rock Festival, and at Glastonbury. Maybe Rock Am Ring as well.
Jeremy: Glastonbury would be amazing, Lollapalooza or Coachella too, you know the more underground festivals.
Fun & Personal
What’s one thing fans would be surprised to learn about the band?
That we’re big time, nerdy gamers who get wasted while we beat ass in Super Smash Bros 😛
Who’s the funniest member of the band, and can you share a funny moment from a tour or rehearsal?
Andreas: Whenever Jeremy drinks a bunch of double IPA’s in one rehearsal and gets a bit rambunctious. Or, when Lisa shows up in a Care Bear pajamas
Lisa: When Daniel and Jeremy were watching a Dodger’s world series game during a rehearsal, and would jump up and down every time the Dodgers scored!
Warholy: This one time, at band camp…
