Their final bewitchment would be the grand and psychotic Suicide in 2002 – and then there would be silence throughout the Mactätus compound for many years to follow. While Mactätus contemplates a comeback for the ages, the band’s drummer Mjolne has taken matters into his own hands, unleashing Through Veils of Time through ATMF. Symphonic black metal in its finest and bleakest hour, In Veils of Time not only recalls the classic Mactätus album Provenance of Cruelty, but builds on the band’s timeless legacy in nothing short of an epic way.
What I Once Was kicks off the sonic journey, reeling the listener in with its vast and majestic melodies. The Olden Perspectives is up next, tantalizing the senses with its opaque keyboards and bombastic choirs. And the auditory adventures seethes for a near rapturous hour, with selections such as Skaldekvad, In the Abyss of Existence, and the intriguing title track enveloping the listener with their fiery refrains.
A masterful highlight is the Til Helheim Trilogy presenting Mjolne at the very height of his creative genius. The Cries Within clocks in at over 8 minutes in length, and it’s a magnus opus of diabolic proportions. And be sure to stay until the blissful grand finale of Ut av Tiden, whose haunting reverberations transport the listener into a wondrious melancholic state of mind.
Through Veils of Time is meticulously crafted by Mjolne alone, and this solo endeavor is nothing short of an all-out triumph! The artistic madness truly reigns supreme throughout the entire recording. Dwell within the nostalgic darkness Mjolne presents in this modern day as witness one of the most brilliantly conceived albums of 2025. Fans of Dimmu Borgir and Old Man’s Child are destined to encounter a kindred spirit within the realm of Mjolne’s debut entreaty. Count this one a solid 10/10!
