Melt Mars at The Smell – Live Review

Melt Mars at The Smell – Los Angeles, CA – June 5, 2026

There’s always been something otherworldly about Melt Mars — the brainchild of vocalist and guitarist Brian Ortiz — but their June 5th headlining return to The Smell felt like a full‑scale relaunch into a brighter, louder, and more confident orbit. Based out of Orange County yet spiritually tethered to the pulse of Downtown LA, Melt Mars stepped back onto the stage with a renewed sense of purpose, drawing a late‑night crowd eager to witness their long‑awaited comeback.

The Smell, with its dim lights, DIY grit, and unmistakable underground heartbeat, proved to be the perfect launchpad. The room buzzed with anticipation, and when the band finally emerged, the energy shifted instantly.

Melt Mars opened with the explosive guitar reveries of Blood Moon, immediately pulling the audience into their shimmering sonic universe. They followed with the vibrant, emotionally charged Unsung Melodies — a one‑two punch that made it clear the band wasn’t just returning; they were ascending.

Then came Phone Sex, the wickedly infectious new single that has been looping endlessly in this reviewer’s head since release. Performed live, it hit even harder — sassier, sharper, and dripping with confidence. The crowd erupted, especially the girls who screamed after this and every song that followed. It was one of those rare moments when you could feel a track becoming a fan favorite in real time.

The momentum never dipped. Meet Me In The City and Memory Lane arrived like emotional postcards — fitting selections for a night destined to linger in memory. Melt Mars closed with the atmospheric Somberlude and the groove‑laden Soul In Your Pocket, leaving the room buzzing long after the final note dissolved into the humid Downtown air.

What makes Melt Mars so compelling is not just the songwriting — though Brian Ortiz continues to prove himself a gifted storyteller and melodic architect — but the way he commands the stage. His vocals soared, his guitar work cut through the room with precision, and his bandmates matched his intensity at every turn. Together, they transformed The Smell into a vivid, neon‑lit dreamscape.

If this show is any indication, the future is about to get very bright for Melt Mars. Phone Sex feels like a breakout single waiting to happen, and Brian Ortiz stands poised on the edge of something big — a massive talent ready to burst into the wider spotlight.
